Play it stealthily, try to never kill a guard ;)

I certainly enjoyed (and still enjoy, from time to time) MGS4; there's an unfortunate lack of stealth games these days.

Do i do it as a COD style shooter, or more of a Splinter Cell stealth game?

Any advice would be awesome.
Complete it without killing anyone or getting any alerts. I've done it, that's how the game is supposed to be played. If everyone played that way, we'd have no-one bitching about the lack of stealth elements in 4.

It's a blade that emits and electric shock, rendering foes unconscious.

Don't ask how it works, this is Metal Gear Solid. Your realism has no place here.
Then why is it a knife instead of stun baton? I mean, if you want to knock someone out, you probably don't want to stab them in the process.

I would take a ShamWow knife over that any day.
It can be used to stab, but Hideo Kojima probably thought the audience would like to shit bricks in the process.

Still - ShamWow knife? I'm in.

Stealth is done a bit differently in MGS4 as you are more often than not surrounded by two different armies. I'd say play it stealth but use a silenced snipe to take out some soldiers in one of the armies and make it easier for yourself.

I've played it both guns blazing and super stealth and it's very fun

Takes forever to charge the railgun though, and you can probably come close to emptying the mag in the 50 b4 the railgun is at full charge.

Deadalus, if you actually acomplished this, i give u props. Everytime i tried not killing everyone, they all found some random way to find me, forcing me to go weapons free till i either killed everyone, or killed enough that they stopped rushing me and then id crawl away.
I learned just to take the lone guys out with a silenced sniper rifle and avoid the big groups unless i could take em down 1 at a time without the rest noticing. Its amazing how thick the ai is. "WE'RE GETTING SHOT AT, HOLD POSITION IN THE OPEN AND SEE IF WE CANT NARROW DOWN HIS POSITION BY WHO DIES FIRST"

Stealthy-like gives you better grades at the end of the game, so I'd go with that.
Your stun-knife/tranquilizer is surprisingly effective for dealing with just about every encounter.
So "Stealthy" is an approach that comes highly recommended.
I agree. But when you refuse to use your tranquilizer gun it gets funny. While playing Big Boss extreme I just couldn't afford to put every foe I confronted into sleep because of lack of ammunition.

But the railgun has it uses. During my second playthrough I was able to drop Ragin Raven with just one or two shots.

Ill give you that Sampsa, but it woulda been really handy to have something that shot faster in Shadow Moses where u have to defend Rex, those damn gecko kept getting next to it while I was distracted watching Raiden fight Vamp.

It depends entirely on how you want to play it. There are parts where enemies respawn infinitely so there's no point in camping and killing them all, unless you're farming up Drebin Points.

Rambo or Stealth, it's all up to you. I for one just Rambo everywhere.

Oh and how do you start over and keep all your guns that you picked up in the first playthrough? Id hate to have to lose all my pretty ars, srs, and mgs.

MGS4 the stealth was "broken" in the sense that you can simply lie down anywhere and be all but completely invisible. I mean you didn't have to use special cover such as certain backgrounds or shadows or cover. Just go prone anywhere, you can even steadily crawl forwards and avoid being noticed most of the time.

You can breeze through the game just steadily crawling forwards and popping a tranquilliser dart in every soldier you see.

As annoying as that is that WILL be a necessary tactic as at many points you have to fight through skirmishes where militia are battling PMC and BOTH sides are re-spawning.

MGS3 had it better in that yes you could be camouflaged in plain sight but only if you had the right camo and under certain backgrounds.

Is there a way to play through again and start with the guns you got in the first play through?

Stealth as much as you can. The game isn't really designed as an all out shooter, although getting in to a few massive firefights for the hell of it can be damn fun.

There's nothing like the satisfaction of unlocking that stealth camo without buying it from Drebin (doing the entire game without a single alert phase, booya!).
