First off, can I just ask: Would it not be better if we had a separate, clearly labeled Spoiler Thread, so that those of us playing through this masterpiece could discuss plot, characters, missions, pigeon locations etc on a specific and individual basis without having to use tags? It needn't be stickied or anything (FORUM POLITIX LOL), but it would provide a refuge for those of us that want to discuss these things without ruining the experience for others, and who do not want to have to go to gamefaqs-or-whatever-dot-com to do so. What do you reckon, mods?
Do it! Just make sure you label it as spoilers in the title.

I second that notion.

i was asked to post this here so some ppl will notice it

here's the fix for the gta iv freezes

well the fix is dead simple compared to the 178307189040879 step one they have out there on gamespot and here's how to do it

start the ps3, with or without disc
if disc is in press the control pad left or right to flip menus
scroll left to settings
scroll down to network settings
select it
go to internet connection
select it
select disable
go back to gta iv

it should load fine
save the game in slot 1, unless you're only saving in slot 1, then maybe save it to another slot
quit the game
turn on your internet connection
start the game again
it should work fine again

not sure if it will work on the 360 version but it does work on the ps3 version

wow i will note that for when my game freezes again because i am actually a distance in it now.

Does this mean i need not fear autosave because it is damn convenient.

i agree i thought at first playing the game "yea but it aint no tetris" 30 seconds later i was addicted. This game is meant for addiction. I could spend hours just exploring bohans alleyways and then there is the rest of liberty left.

Gah im getting more n more frustrated not being able to play GTA IV. That said, Gamespot once again gave me reason to consider their reviews credebility. The reviewer (who like all English people seem to do on the internet just sounded camp imo) had quite a few things uncomplimentry things to say about it such as the new wanted system makes it piss easy to escape cops. Yet they still give it 10/10. You dont finish a review listing quite a sizeable collection of the negetive things about a game then give it a perfect score imo

There are some very inventive and fun to do missions in this game, but there are still quite a few of the "go kill this guy, oh wait he ran away when you approached" or the "pick up this car, bring it back" or even the delivery missions.

There are some great fun missions just for the cover system, shoot-outs are more real and theres a lot of running through buildings and jumping across rooftops etc.

The cop cars can also give a new take on things with some missions too. Great fun.

This is what I've been saying all along. The game is fun, damn fun. It's one of the most entertaining games I've played on the 360 in a while. That said, how in the hell can all these pompous, idiotic reviewers out there list so many grievances, bugs (the game just out right crashes/freezes more often than it should), and other such problems with the game yet turn around and give it a perfect score? If I'm not mistaken, don't bugs, glitches, and other such bad programming/design merit a DECREASE in overall score, not an increase? Makes absolutely no sense to me. I may not consider this game to be worthy of a perfect score, but I still think it's one of the better games to hit the market in a long time.

One other question. Now, it may just be me, but I've noticed on my copy of the game, as well as quite few other copies owned by my friends, that the ingame engine suffers from some the occasional framerate drops. Sometimes it's pretty bad, other times not so much, but it seems to happen regularly and at not just a times when there's a lot of on-screen action. Anyone else noticed this? I'm just wondering because, if not, than I may have a bad copy or something.

I watched that two hour gameplay marathon that they had on Gamespot. (This was Friday I THINK.)
I realized something after it: I HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL AT LEAST TUESDAY TO GET IT.

I am now going "MY GOD I CAN'T WAIT UNTIL TUESDAY!" Over and over again.

I'm trading games in for it... (CoD4, Bioshock, Naruto Rise of a Ninja, Command and Conquer 3(4 Games that I found to be Meh, for one game that I hope is worth it.))

People, can we please not take reviewing scores seriously anymore. Yes it's true, no game is worth 10/10 ( well except deus ex1 and hl1 ;) )since reviewers have been throwing high scores at every hyped game and it's mother. I suggest you just read the damn things and make up your own mind once you've played it yourself. Gamespot is far from perfect and I'm surprised some people still think it's the word of god with their ratingsystem. I suggest you try their readers reviews section, usually you see scores from 6 to 10 so there is almost always something people hate or like.
Now back on topic, I'm playing gta for about 2 days now and yes there are some things that bug me. The cover flaws that were the same in rainbow six vegas( you know where you're next to a door, but not quite close enough so you can't shoot and the guy rushes and kills you ), the non-sticking camera when driving ( why is there not an option for this, am I missing something? )and the fact that you have to redrive the first part of every mission if you replay it ( seems like artificially enhancing the playtime to get an X hours of the game ).
But then again I'm easy to pick out stuff that I consider flawed in games and yes I'm a perfectionist. What surprises me though I'm still playing it and I'm still having fun ( eventhough my regular tv sucks ). The text is actually readable unlike games like chromehouds or deadrising on my tv. Little detail in the city almost everywhere makes it all feel alive and natural. It actually feels like you're there, driving that car. All you have to do is watch the people on the street a little and you get the most crazy stuff before your eyes. I think that if I were to get back to playing an older city game like mafia or a previous gta it would all feel very very articifial. Gone are the days of people only walking, doing nothing else. The morrowind syndrome is no more, here we have a giant playbox for a character I care about. Yes I care about Niko and I haven't cared about anyone in games for a long time. He has history, he's forced to get by with the only thing he can do yet he has the option of saving some people that don't deserve to die by his contractors. The people he meets you either hate or love, just like Niko does. I thought Vlad was an asshole and I like Brucie for some reason, I've become one with Niko when I play without actually realising it.
That's what makes gta a terrific game and makes me forgive it's flaws. I'm compelled to play and I'm sure I'm not the only one.
I forgot to mention this is one of the few games where cars don't instantly blow up hollywood style, which makes it all the more real. If you like a great story and an open sandbox to do whatever what you want, get it now.

that's probly a draw issue, i haven't seen it myself yet but i'm sure it will. it's a bug that can or can't be fixed depending on how they feel. usually it's a "turn down the draw distance" or "turn down item on screen" type fix but gta iv doesn't have that. but it also loads most of the city on the fly, so it could just be a transitioning thing or a 360 exclusive bug that can't be fixed cause of the no hard drive install. i can't fully say cause i have the ps3 version and it has most stuff loaded onto the hdd

as for the other bugs in the game affecting the score, they are minor annoyances that can and will be fixed, so they won't affect the review score.

To address a few issues I've seen here:

Lock-on - If you find that you don't like the lock on system, you can either pull the trigger half-way for free aim, or disable it altogether in the options menu.

Camara - The back button will change the camara angle for you if you're in a car. Just keep hitting it until you find one you like.

Races - If you want to do well, AVOID THE "E" BRAKE! These cars are way more life-like then past GTA games, you have to slow down a ways before your turn. The "E" brake is meant to turn you around quickly, not for taking turns like a madman. Unless of course your going for the car flip points on the 360, then by all means, turn like crazy.

That being said, this game is owning my life. Every time I want to shut it off, I get a phone call or something that just keeps sucking me back in. And the first time I hit the big city, I crashed about 8 times just looking around. Now if only I could fly...

That's what I thought at first too, but it also happens when there's literally almost nothing on screen. Nothing long distance in view and/or very few NPCs, cars, or other physics objects on screen. So, I'm not sure, but I'm thinking it's an error in the engine. Some bug they may have not noticed or bothered to fix.

hmmm could be a memory issue then, ie it's rehashing or dumping the memory and it's taking a bit of time to do so cause we all know how good m$ is at doing memory management :)

but yeah it could be a minor annoyance that they deemed ok for it to be shipped and looked at later. tho it could be one of those things they just didn't come across too
