I actually access to some old Mar-vell comics, as it happens, including the first issue featured in this video (with the green and white costume).

My dad has about 300 comic books from the late 60s/early 70s - mostly Amazing Spiderman, Fantastic Four, Avengers etc, and also 10 or so of these. I was completely obsessed with the collection as a kid, but not particularly with these - I recognised the images in this video but can't remember Captain Marvel so I guess they weren't that great.
As for DC's Captain Marvel, I'd never even heard of him til I saw a friend playing DC vs Mortal Kombat, but what with only having read a load of comic books from 40 years ago I've not really had much exposure to comics as a whole. Cool episode though, and fun to have Bob explain something about comics of which I'm at least slightly aware.

That doesn't even begin to cover it for this weeks episode.

But it sounds to me like both DC and Marvel are acting childish...

So basically it's the "Ghostbusters" story except the new guys aren't racking in the same publicity as the old guys.

So; Billy Batson's superpower is being a boy who can turn into a 30-something man and vice-versa? I don't care how marketable that is, it's icky.

And all this without mentioning the "inspired-by-Captain-Marvel" Miracle Man series...

You could do a whole nother COMICS ARE WEIRD SHOW. Seriously im too young for the silver age of comics and really only got into allot of the B-F list characters and their side kicks from any of the major or minor publishers, but i like hearing about them. Keep up the informed ranting.

Yes Captain Marvel is awesome. The SHAZAM guy I mean. Strong guys that can fly are a dime a dozen in the comic world. The fact that Marvel derives his powers from the virtues of past heroes makes him unambiguous. It's true that some of these virtues are physical characterics and seem shallow. It's important to remember Greeks and Romans considered a strong body to be just as important a virtue as a strong mind.

Unlike Super Man who is unfortunate enough to be good because he wants to be and because he had good parents. Meaning that old soops gets his motives endlessly questioned by jaded geeks who can't conceive of someone being that good.

Don't worry Bob! Most comic book nerds are like that. Right now, i'm trying to learn all of Wonderwoman's history for a project and... yeesh @_@

I actually didn't know about or was interested in Mar-vell until i read about a young avenger who is actually his secret child that he had with a Skrull princess but the kid never found out until the evil Super Skrull came looking for him. But really, Super Skrull was just trying to protect him from the other skrulls and... ya. Has there ever been a time other then the Golden age when comics were simple?

I've got a question. Why is it always "Captian" Superhero? Why not "Admiral" Superhero, or "Marshal" Superhero?

I guess that's another thing that's weird about comics.

Good episode Bob. Honestly, I think this show really should just be called "Comics are Weird". They're the best episodes by far. Even though I have an extensive knowledge of comics I don't know half the obscure shit here.

Always really liked Captain Marvel in modern day comics, not in the sense that I'd actually read any of that poorly written shit, but in the sense that he's kind of become an even more of a Boy Scout than Superman. Superman is a grown adult, he's nieve (or possibly just has faith in humanity depending on your outlook) but as comics have become more "mature" so has he. Billy by his very nature remains innocent; he's a kid. In his way he's kind of like the modern day silver age Superman.

Yeah, they stuck Captain Mar-vell in the recent Avengers cartoon for an episode. Marvel aren't going to win, but they'll never say die.
Oh yeah, I remember that episode. The character wasn't overly interesting.

As far as I'm concerned DC's Captain Marvel is only cool for one reason, Black Adam. Seriously he's an awesome villain.

Still the original Captain Marvel (From marvel comics) is actually one of my most beloved characters. I'm extremely glad he's got the rights to the name.

And well. DC got screwed by karma. Their own fault in the end lol

But then again so are comic books.
One day things will get really weird, when japanese manga enters this show. I knew about the dispute, but not about how weird was Cp Marvel (both) comics were.
Typically, most Japanese manga haven't been running as long as American comics, so American comics actually have the opportunity to be weirder just purely out of run time.

I know Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes had Captain Marvel (the Marvel one, not the DC one) on one episode, but I think he was more heavily influenced by the Ultimate universe Captain Marvel, which is a whole new can of worms
