That was surprisingly thoughtful. I think Bob is stretching his analysis when Halo is pretty much the same Spartans vs. Persians things we've been seeing from Bungie since Marathon, but this video wasn't what I was expecting. What I was expecting from Mr. Chipman was "SHOOTER FANS ARE FRAT BOY JOCKS RARGLEBLARGLE!!!!" So, congrats on breaking form.

Oh great another show where Bob tries to sell hail marry passes as intellectual criticism.
This trick got really old really fast with the game over thinker and hasn't gotten any more interesting after the rebranding.

So, you mean to say humans in Halo are fascists? And also in Starship Troopers? And that they are being attacked by an invading force is not good enough reason to fight them?... Wow, I think you just blow my mind. There I was, thinking that the name "Spartans" was just a happy coincidence, and a society full of armored living weapons was my idea of utopia... What is next? Starcraft space marines being a bunch of rednecks with big guns?

Seriously, you are reading too much into it. The game is set in a dystropian future, it is not meant to be taken literal... If you want to pick a target on Halo, target it for its lack of evolution, bland level design or something that makes sense in terms of the game, not because you find the fictional setting offensive. That is like parents complaining about GTA because they assume that is the image of the world their kids are hoping to live; or people complaining about 1984 for being a bad "influence".

Wow...

That was a perfect example of having way too much time to think...

Bob, you read way too much into this. Disappointing first show. And I'm not even a big Halo fan.

Oh cool, thanks. They must not have shown that first one in the uk, or i didnt see it on tv anyway.

As for the halo trailers in general, i actually would love to see a halo movie directed by whoever does the trailers.

I know it's kind of your job to over think things but would you not think that maybe the reason that the enemies in halo are alot more diverse then the player characters is because......they're the ones we're looking at all the time. It's a first person game remeber?

Also there are no good guys in halo. The spartans kill just as many humans as they do covenant, and in all of the stories surrounding the series, just as much sympathy is conveyed for the races of the covenant as for the humans, including halo 2 where you actually play as an elite.
In fact the only thing that comes close to a villain in the entire series is the flood......you know the homogenous consumption driven mass, the only aim of which is to propagate itself by means of wiping all individualism from the face the universe.
Exactly. He is reading waaay to much into this, and he's coming at it from the wrong angle. By the end of Halo 3 you're practically working with the Covenant against the Flood, whose STATED GOAL in the ark terminals is the utter homogenizing of the entire galaxy/universe.
Oh, and also: We were fighting the Covenant because their "arcane belief system" led them to try and wipe us out. I guess because they looked more diverse we should have just let them kill all the humans, right? Oh, and they were going to extinguish all life from the galaxy because their crazy prophets wanted to become gods. THAT is why we were fighting them, not because they were "the other". And honestly, DIVERSITY IN YOUR ENEMIES IS NECESSARY FOR INTERESTING GAMEPLAY. Oh, and one last point: you might want to note that for Halo 3, your team is comprised primarily of an alien, a black guy, a robot, and the love interest is an AI. If that isn't a diverse cast, I don't know what is.

You know I only agree with you on the most seldom of occasions about what makes for an entertaining movie, but I can never seem to fault you on your sociological analysis of more sweeping topics of symbolism and subtext. I'm glad you have this show to put on display the content of your program I view in really high esteem, while at the same time I'll get to watch you review movies and say something to the effect of, "yeah... It still doesn't look like my thing."

i think thats over-analysing a game that was never meant for any deep thoughts, but then again this is the game overthinker so i dont know what i was expecting, i must say i didn't find this episode very interesting as its something i have read about many times before, but once you move onto something beside games i think it will be far more interesting, i rarely agree with you, but i have yet to miss a episode of movie bob or the game overthinker, so you are doing something right^^

I think MovieBob's argument would be valid if the Covenant were trying to absorb the humans in to their ranks. But the fact is it isn't about a game where humans are fearing the loss of their individuality or anything, the Covenant are trying to invade their planets and kill them all.

Plus in Halo 3 the Elites leave the Covenant and join the humans and fight alongside them, with them being on par to Spartans in fighting ranks. Which kind of dissolves the entire argument of Halo showing mixed society = bad.

bull....shit. People hate halo because its so overdone. it stole 90% of its content from other successful literature, games, or pop culture.

flood = Half life.
shields = starcraft.
etc.
Er, the Flood weren't taken from Half-life. Zombies have been around wayyy longer than Half-life.

I've always enjoyed Movie Bob's rants, and the premise of the show felt like a good one at first. But the whole "master race" thing kind of rubbed me the wrong way. Granted, he said he wasn't a Halo fan, though he obviously did some homework. Doesn't seem like enough though considering that diversity has nothing at all to do with motivation, in this case the covenant's motivation to wipe humanity from the universe.
And while the whole fascist symbolism may have some weight in terms of the Spartans and the UNSC as an organization, cultural diversity is apparent in these games for those who can see past the uniforms. I was playing Halo with my brother in the living room when one of the NPCs cussed. In Spanish. Right when our mom was walking by.
Remember, just because it's not in English doesn't mean there aren't people who will understand. X_X

Ultratwinkie:
Um... your allies are the humans. (at least initially). They kind of have to look human. Its the way they are.
(Also: I'm just going on halo 1-ODST here. I haven't gotten reach.)

Honestly I think moviebob took a sub-text too far.

The main reason the covenant are so varied is because they were initially created for gameplay variety and every member of the team is the same because they want to prevent they're master chief.
