Most European contries really aren't that patriotic unless they come up against their particular rival... or are playing football.

I really enjoyed this analysis, a few deep thoughts on patriotism with films and comics.

Well played Bob, well played.

My personal view is that patriotism is the essence of a countries resilience, countries need patriotism as a backbone ... well, the marabone jelly of the spine, nuclear arms are the backbone but that's not the point.

Oh and Bob, we REALLY do not need David Beckham or Jamie Oliver back ... thanks anyway x).

I call Nor-Man!
The Norwegian hero with a fiddle which fights people with "hallingkast"!

(Hallinkast is the part of the dance "Halling" where the dancer crouches down and takes a high jump where he attempts to kick a hat of a pole.)

First thing that came to mind with other countries national heroes, was Captain Germany! And the Oh-God-So-Delicious controversy that would sprout from said character.

Seriously, I think there would be blood on the streets of Berlin. Nobody hates their nationality with such a passion as germans these days.

It's not so much the rest of the world hates America, it's that we hate some Americans, you know the Glenn Beck types, who are so bloody obnoxious and pretentious that share volume of their bullshit ends up making it hard to notice the rest of you.

It's one thing to be proud of your country, hell I'm proud of mine, but you can't be a dick about it.

First off, it took us ages to get rid of that simple minded, simpering man-child Galaxy so kindly bought off of us, so no, we're not taking him back. [sub]Seriously, please keep him.[/sub]

And secondly, I'd say that Britain does have 'superheroes', except they don't wear Spandex and have radioactive powers. Bob, I'll see you an Ironman and a Captain America and raise you a James Bond and a Sherlock Holmes!
isn't James bond infact a Canadian created character who happens to be British because the whole idea of him came from a recruit from camp X a candian spy camp during ww2 near lake ontario?

Canada used to have a super-hero but america bought it from us.

He was called superman.

We should make Carmine our hero. Seriously in a combat situation he still thinks the golden rule is "treat others as you would treat yourself"
which is being polite. Which is one of the stereotypical things we are known for. He also has the most personality (sorry other countries).
nothing wrong with being know for not being a asshole i think its great canadian steriotypes include being polite

Exactly, things like that. Like I tried to say earlier, the thing is that "americans" fail to see things like that.

For example, "countries are supposed to have comic book heroes". The US has such a vast amount of comic book heroes because its culture needs them, think of them as masturbatory fantasies. People who like redheads will populate their... ehm.. intimate alone time... with red headed individuals. In the same way the comic book hero fantasy fills a hole the US needs
, you can learn a lot about a culture based on what they seek as amusement.

We could say that the need for "bad guys who are evil" and "good guys who do good" speaks volumes about the mind set of the country. Without going too much into it, take a look at how the latest war was launched (War on Terror, War against Evil, etc).

No, I'm pretty sure Ian Fleming stated quite categorically that Bond was British. And even if I'm wrong, St George was supposedly a Roman soldier and that didn't stop him becoming the patron saint of England.

Ah, right. Again though, I'm pretty sure Ian Fleming was also British - certainly born in London anyway, although I don't know his parents' nationalities.

EDIT - After a fact (ha!) finding mission on Wiki, Ian Fleming was British. Although it's Wiki, so it's also equally likely that he was a Martian and/or from the future.

Little fact. Canada is actually starting to get a movie deal made about Captain Canuck. Looks like the U.S.A have started a trend.

http://www.torontolife.com/daily/hype/cinemania-hype/2011/01/28/captain-canuck-goes-hollywood-possible-movie-in-the-works-with-justin-bieber-as-the-red-caped-crime-fighter/

I am a Canadian who works in a movie theatre and Captain Canuck has even been mentioned in our magazines though I severely hope that part about Justin Bieber is actually a joke. I was looking forward to it till I found out he might be in it

I hear a lotta people ranting how America is taking oil from the Middle East
every time I fill up my gas tank, I SO WISH America actually was stealing oil from the Middle East (as opposed to just defending the fields from despots who'd drive up the prices even more)

not seriously though, just making a point here.
that's just the America-hating Americans
I just felt like making a counterpoint to the extremist flag-waving Americans

either way...I'm just a simple man trying to make my way in the galaxy. wish the gas prices weren't so high, but just gotta keep flying, and it'd be enough for me

Very interesting episode.

Captain America: I really enjoy the Captain America written by Ed Brubaker.
There is no need to be american or patriotic to enjoy a well written story & character. :)
