This month's Game Informer listed the '30 Characters' that Defined a Decade', with of course GLaDOS as number 1. That's fine, but here's the thorn in my side: Master Chief was 4, while the Boss was 19.

*Makes sure capslock is off* How does a personality-less, barebones backstory space marine rank out higher than one of the most tragic figures in one of gaming's greatest franchises? Speaking of tragic, he outplaced the Wanderer from Shadow of the Collosus, one of the front-runners in the games are art catagory.

Someone please explain this to me, because I'd LOVE to hear it

It's a gaming magazine. Their opinions are usually... not so great.

The only reason, that I think, can be this: popularity.

Master Chief is the frontrunner of one of the biggest franchises of this decade, heck, people who have never played Halo know who he is.

And heck, he's becoming a mascot of Microsoft. Corporate world wins again, I suppose.

It is sad, but oh well, at least he didn't win.

because there's more kids than educated young adults?

I really don't know, but you have a point, that is pretty stupid to do that

Don't worry about it, the popular opinion is always wrong. About everything.
Master Chief is beloved by Halo fantatics everywhere, they don't care about character, they just want their game to win. Heck in a list of the best actual characters we'd be seeing a LOT that aren't very conventional. No Gordon Freeman or Kratos.
RPGs would have a field day.

Because you're a fan of the others so your opinion is biased towards them? It was about ppl who defined the decade and you can't toss his popularity to the side just cuz he's another space marine. The boss was more an inspirational char, but she was always just talked about, not many who play MSG even know what she's about since all they focus on is snake and metal gear. Seeing as how they picked ppl for different reasons, not just who's the coolest or the bigger influence it's not a bad list.

In the end the list isn't going to be perfect, it was their opinion and everyone else as theirs as to what shoulda been up, or at what place.

Because MGS games don't usually have good stories or characters, I am surprised the boss was ranked that high.

They probably incorporated the novels, because there is no way Master Chief would be number four on the list if they didn't.

People can justify the inclusion of any popular game/character in any list.

A couple of weeks ago I had to stop reading an article that argued that Gordan Freeman was the most realized character in video game history despite exhibiting the personality of the square block in the Atari 2600 Adventure.

Yes, because people are expected to read books that are spun off a game, to get the personality.

Perhaps we can have games with no story, and then make books that have the games story in it. -.-''

Even reading the post above mentioning MGS I still don't know who the boss is. Presuming the MGS comment is correct maybe because Metal Gear is a ridiculous, convoluted mess?

Well, it could get frat boys to read. :p
I imagine they'd just get wasted and play the game while going, "duuuuude, I don't know what's goin' on, but this is wiiicked~"

"...the '30 Characters' that Defined a Decade..."
"How does a personality-less, barebones backstory space marine..."

I believe you have answered your own question. This isn't about the best, or most tragic, it is what defined the decade. With Gears of War + COD + Halo I'm surprised Master Chief isn't 1. Also I think Glados even being on that list is mere lip service. Sure Glados was superior in every way but that is only what us crazy people will be talking about over the massive swell that is "OMG YOU NOOB!, TEABAG!".

Because Halo did define gaming for a good while. It still does.

It's not about which character was best, but which one was most influential. If you say Halo had no influence, you're wrong. True, Master Chief isn't an interesting character in the games, but come on. Credit where it's due.

Edit: Ninja'd by the post above me. Darn.
