IM going to say that they are right because master chief even with not personality has pretty much put xbox(in his early years) on the map as gaming console and is the face of one of the biggest selling franchises in gaming history in the last decade

Um, barebones backstory? Try reading some books. They take it from "barebones" to "reasonably fleshy".
Well there comes a problem. Most of the Halo fanbase plays it for the multi player. And doesn't give a toss about the story. And then comes the other fact that not all gamers are readers, like myself. And if you are making a game, you shouldn't have the story in something other than the game. That's just silly.

OT: I prefer PC Gamer to Game Informer. I've read a couple of issues of both, and Game Informer pretty much just bores the fuck out of me.

I had to google "the boss" to make sure I was write in thinking it was that character from one of those Metal Gear Solid games. I didn't have to google anything to know who Master Chief was and I've played more of the MGS series than the Halo series.

He's alot more iconic and had a much bigger impact culturally on the industy in the last decade, so although he might not be the most fleshed out character in the world, his place is definatly justified.

It is the Defined the decade list... not the deepest character list of the decade. Master Chief deserves his place!

Wow, is the world revolving around me or something today? x-x (just finished a MGS3 playthrough last night after his last one 2 years ago)

But ya..while I have to agree, that the Boss is one of the most well developed and emotional driven characters in a video game ever, she really doesn't have much bearing as a decade defining character. Not many people have played Metal Gear Solid games, and even fewer then that have played MGS3 (mostly because they stopped at 2 because of the Raiden incident).

That and apparently some people have problems with the MGS story, which really isn't that hard once you think about it, its actually a pretty well strung together story, with each part having some meaning for later in the game, or later in the storyline.

But yes, back on topic, The Boss is a tragic and well defined character, but this is about iconic characters of the decade, which I think Solid Snake would probably be a better contestant for.

note: I also included a picture of her with my comment because apparently people don't know who she is T_T (seriously people, go pick up MGS3: Snake Eater....now!)

Obviously the poll was written by fools.
master cheif DOES make sense, in that he was the most popular faceless hero of the decade, he made the faceless space marine idea popular, for better and for worse.

the bigger WTF is glados being 'number 1'
riddle me this, what AAA games this decade were influenced by this 'character'?
hell, would you kindly throw down the link to it?

It's an opinionated gaming magazine. I'm still trying to figure out why Bonnie MacFarlane is on that list, but I still saw many of my favorite character up there. Professor Layton especially.

Because more people have heard of Master Chief than the Boss? I don't even know who he is, I had to read the majority of the thread to even work out what franchise he's from.

I played a small amount of a MGS game at a friend's house and found it incredibly dull, uninspiring and just generally not worth owning, let alone liking enough to relate to a character. Halo is by no means the greatest thing ever but at least it never bored me to tears with hours of cutscenes.

It's also because opinions are subjective, someone else's opinion being taken over yours shouldn't bother you enough to require a poorly disguised "Halo vs MGS" thread.

The reason it "defines a generation" is not if it's good, but if it sells a bajillion copies. Halo did that.

The poll is "characters that defined a decade", not "best characters of the decade". You could probably find more non-gamers who recognize Master Chief than gamers who could recognize the boss. Even if he is devoid of personality, he's certainly iconic.

the Boss is easily number 1 imo, because she made every awesome character in the MGS series what they are today. *salutes*
