I remember hearing about this study, where they took 100 people and gave them all a survey to do, rating their beliefs from 1 to 5 (strongly disagree to strongly agree). When those were turned in, most of the answers were 2-4, with very few 1s and 5s. Then they put them into small groups and had them complete the same survey. When they turned those in, all the answers were either a 1 or a 5, nothing between.

Same thing is happening with CoD. Most of the people who call it terrible and say the series should die have been influenced by the internet, and their opinion was amplified. Same thing with some of the fanboys.

If you're one of the people who hates it that much, I seriously doubt that was your opinion when you played MW2.

Plus, there's the whole bandwagon effect. It's popular to hate CoD.

Now don't think they're terrible games, the campaigns are a good few hours of ridiculousness, and the multiplayer is fast, mindless fun. 4 was a great game and had some of the best multiplayer of the generation that far, but then it started focusing too much on the multiplayer.

As for them being "overrated", game critics know about all the hate, but they have to stay objective. 4 got a 94 on Metacritic from 70 positive reviews. There's is no way more than 10-20 of those were extremely biased. MW2 got 100 positive reviews, although I do have to admit it was running on a shitload of hype. World at War had 76 positive and 8 negative reviews, and BlOps got 83 positive and 6 negative.

EDIT: That's all on 360, by the way.

So consistently getting 70-100 positive reviews does not make it overrated. It makes it good.

But why are people hating because it's successful? Is it because it's the cool thing to do?
You just answered your question. They hate it because its the cool thing to do and it is successful. Anybody who sales Call of Duty is never changing shit is somebody who has not played the games for more then 10 minutes and so should shut the fuck up about it.

If you notice there are two types of people who complain about call of duty. Those who complain that it is the exact same everytime and those who complain becuase of how much it has changed since CoD4. Now to me they cant both be right since a game has either changed or it hasnt changed. One of these groups is a bunch of fucking morons who have never played the game before. I shall leave which group that is up to you.
I can kinda see the "same thing every time," but I can also see how it's changed.
CoD4 changed up CoD a lot, no questions.
WaW was kinda the same but with Nazis, Zombies, and WW2 weapons.
MW2 changed it a lot, with pro perks, customizable killstreaks, etc.
Black Ops changed less than MW2, but more than WaW.
That's the reason I look forward mainly to the IW games, but might pick up the 3Arc ones.

Call of Duty isn't as widely hated as people would like us to think. The people who shout and scream over having a game of 3/12 K/D are the same people who get back on the next day to try their luck again.

There's a lot of bruised ego and heartache in Call of Duty multiplayer, but when the next game comes out we're all going to buy it anyway and have fun... intermixed with a few bad days.

I think the main reason people hate it is because it uses the same formula over and over again, never seeming to change much other than a few extra things yet it is still so popular. This frustrates people because the games they like for being different don't get enough attention. Also, it has a huge younger audience because many young kids don't get bored by repetition. They make the community disagreeable to some people.

WaW made some pretty big changes but they were a lot more subtle. They made much bigger maps then CoD4 had and on top of that they really seemed to have reduced weapon damage. Both of these masivly slowed down the game. On top of that they threw vehicles in some of the maps which had the posibility of being major game changers. The changes in MW2 and Black ops were far more obvious but not necessarily any more game changing.

I just hope that IW keeps up with some of the changes that treyarch did with black ops. I really do not want stopping power back and I loved the way they did the pro versions of perks in black ops.
My main problem with WaW was that to me, it just felt like a CoD4 skin, I still enjoyed it though.
Black Ops made some very good changes, such as Flak Jacket, reduced tubes, etc, but I ultimately abandoned it and went back to MW2.
The Pro perks in Black Ops were annoying, but it expanded my gametype-playing too, so I guess it paid off.
One reason I like IW Games is that Treyarch seems to not know what good sound is, on a side note.

I will keep it short.

I hate CoD players more than the game.
I got tubed / harassed / insulted / griefed too many times in multiplayer, so I prefer campaign more. Aaaand the problem is that CoD focuses more on multiplayer than on campaign, so here you go.

But, it seems that a lot of the hate is because it ushered in a new era of shooters, which is obviously "modern games (Homefront, MoH, etc.)
But, how is this Call of Duty's fault? It seems that Call of Duty is getting hate because it found something that works, and other companies wanted to emulate that.
Don't get me wrong, I see where most of the other hate comes from, that it's the same game every year (I get, but don't agree,) that apparently it's about how America is FUCK YEAH (The main character is Scottish I think,) etc.
But why are people hating because it's successful? Is it because it's the cool thing to do?
Searchbar, please. I don't think there's been as many pony love, pony hate, and the last thing X has now done X to your mom's X threads combined as "Why the love/hate for COD?" There is literally no need for you to ask the question.

Yeah, I wish CoD would have a tad more focus on singleplayer.

This. The community is shit.

Also, I'd like a game where I have to think about what to do. That's why I prefer tactical shooters, strategy games and RPG's. But that's just personal taste.

They insist one releasing one every single year, instead of taking time and making something special. You know, like Bioshock, Half-Life 2, or even Deus Ex

lots of people says they hate it, because it's the same game over and over again. But while it is the same(hell, every CoD past CoD2 just feels like an expansion pack to that game), it's getting a lot of hate, because it's popular as hell. I don't imagine seeing anybody hate on Call of Duty that much in the CoD4 days, or CoD: World at War days (though to be fair, I do remember people saying they were looking forward to the next CoD more than they enjoyed World at War).

But to use the argument "it's the same game, just reskinned" as an excuse to hate it, is in my opinion, a stupid argument. There's so many games out there that hardly changes itself, and yet everyone loves it. Legend of Zelda & Mario are the best examples I can come up with. With Halo, Uncharted among others coming a close second.

I don't hate CoD. The multiplayer is pretty entertaining and the single player (while short) is entertainingly epic, yet also completely stupid (at least if we talk about MW2). It is the same game we've been playing since CoD2, which is why my interest has been killed off a bit for MW3. See, I don't hate it for being the same, just means I know what the game brings and that it'll impress me less.

My basic list:

* Game hasn't really changed since Call of Duty 2 was released.
* Desperately wants to be more action movie than video game, makes no attempt to hide that fact.
* Due to the fact that it's become a cash cow, features bleed over into other games and annoy the hell out of me. Prime example: plastering the screen with text and XP counters when I so much as step on a bug. I don't know why this game needs to constantly remind me how awesome I am for doing the most basic of tasks.

United Offensive was probably one of the best CoD games ever made, even though (and probably because) Grey Matter made it as an expansion to the first game. I haven't spent a dime on any Call of Duty game since Call of Duty 2.

Deja Vu X 9000.

This thread, it is not new.

Oh well.

I don't really care for it, but then I just don't buy it. If you buy it, like it, and play it, good for you. I won't get in your face about how I don't like it, you don't get in my face about how you do.

The end?

No, of course not, this is the internet and gaming, where you can't feel that your opinion is valid unless everyone agrees with you, and where those that don't share your opinion must be "corrected".

You can't stop the hate, but you can stop caring about it.

CLARIFICATION: "You" used above is in the context of general placeholder for "any person", not specifically the OP.

Because the multiplayer is not very tactical compared the "classic" shooters:

I dont hate CoD but i think what they are doing with the game is stupid and they are doing it just for a paycheck because they know it will sell. CoD is more of a fast paycheque then a game to them, They will just rehash the same game toss in some new guns and maps sell it full price and because of the name its gonna sell to the top of the charts dispite being the same multyplayer and another forgettable SP. Then a few months after one of the biggest paycheques from games possable they come out with 3 maps and charge 15 bucks for em. CoD4 was made to be a good game and something new for the series, WaW tryed to go back to the roots of CoD and the rest are just them milking it for more cash
