'Lo thar!

In a conversation with a friend of mine, the term "moe" came up when we talked about various manga and animé. I asked him what it meant, and he simply told me: Check the internet.

So here I am, and I ask of you to give me a clear definition of moe!

Non-smartass answer, I heard it on lucky star but I have no Idea

Oh, just pronounced "Moh" is the simpsons character. But if you pronounce it "Moh-ee", then it's the town in Aus.
Otherwise... Yea, I've not a clue what he's on about. o_O

This sounds plausible enough? :p

Moe means cute or adorable, basically. Specifically, it refers to a trait in a character. Someone 'moe' is generally young, innocent-looking and childish and brings out sort of a big brother instinct in you.

Wikipedia is your friend (your sometimes lying, inaccurate friend).

If you were discussing Manga and Anime, then your friend was likely describing a character that's incredibly cute, innocent, etc.

Yes, I was thinking that aswell, so I posted it. Then I decided to look it up, and I was a little bit off, but that's basically what it is... A very cute character, in some way...

It's the type of character that is so adorable that any potential romantic or sexual interest is overshadowed by an immense desire to just take them in your arms and protect them for the rest of their life. It's the adorably cute character that you can't help but love.

So here I sit, counting down the hours to K-ON the movie DVD and the fansub while listening to some random anime song (Right now it's the opening for AnoHana). To think that almost two years ago I'd only seen One Piece and spanish dubbed Doraemon[footnote]Those holiday moments.[/footnote], and viewed manga and animé as something I didn't hate, but feared to dip more than my toe into. What happened?
The short answer would be this person.

It all started when he kept bugging me to watch this show called Death Note. Of course I'd heard one or two mention it before, seen its logo and characters on random bags and such, but I'd always disregarded that as some goth-shit. That was of course very foolish of me, as I realized when I watched it. At that moment I genuinely enjoyed it, and I thought that this stuff the Japanese produces ain't all that bad. Eager to hear if he had more of this awesome stuff to recommend, my friend mentioned the infamous title, "Lucky Star". Which I had never heard about. So I asked him,

"What is this "Lucky Star" all about then?"
"Basically, it's four high school girls doing nothing in particular," he replied in his casual tone.
"Gee, that sounds terrifyingly exciting," my voice imbued with sarcasm.
But after some discussion I decided to try to watch the pilot episode, only to close the video player after roughly 10 excruciating minutes where by the end it felt like my head was going to explode from listening to how to eat strawberry shortcake, and of course the philosophical debate on which side of the chocolate-filled cornet is really the head? Figuring myself no man to answer questions of such magnitude[footnote]Or lack of rather[/footnote], I went back to finishing Death Note, all the while pestering my friend with baseless taunts of the silly shows he was watching and how his brain would deteriorate in the near future. In his defense he told me:

"You just don't get moé."
"Isn't that the last name of that one guy in physics?"
"I'm sure it's a lot of things, but I was not referring to that guy. If you really want to know what moé is, the internet has good explanations on it."
The internet... Of course, he's taking the easy way out by not bothering explaining it to me himself.

It took me a while to get around to going online and looking the meaning behind this word. After reading about it though, it quickly became clear why he had problems explaining it clearly, as it seemed impossible to get the answer I was looking for. Various words stuck with me, like cute, adorable and protecting. I asked a question in this very thread, I even read what TV-tropes had to say about the issue, but I never felt I fully understood it. Nothing, I thought, could get me walking on this rose-coloured path of cat ears and maid outfits. I was just about to give up; it seemed that all was lost...

Then one day, I found myself baked as a cake in front of my computer, when I spot a folder on my hard drive with the name "Lucky Star". Carefully, I opened the folder with a quivering hand and found inside 24 video files. As if in a trance, I opened the one labeled episode 1.Things exploded in colours, voices sang the most - there's no other word for it - genki song I had ever heard. It was as if there was a giant storm, a whirlpool of colours, a vortex of sounds and in the eye of the whirlwind was me trying to keep up with the karaoke subs. The thoughts I had on the subject all rearranged inside my head, the things I'd read and heard were all puzzled together. I truly agreed that saving the strawberry for last is the right thing to do. There was no questioning their slow, puffing train of thoughts. No doubt about how awesome those seifuku looked on them. No lingering thoughts objecting to the catchy song. And which side is the head on a chocolate-filled cornet?
[HEADING=1]I get it.[/HEADING]
