I am imagination. I can see what the eyes cannot see. I can hear what the ears cannot hear. I can feel what the heart cannot feel.
-Peter Nivio Zarlenga

You are one of the few Imaginators(Mages as a common term) still left in the world. You each have a unique style of magic governed only by your thoughts, likes, interests, dislikes, hates, etc. Though you are all doomed to become either catatonic or mad as your mind can only bend under the strain of the impossible so long before it breaks.

As a Mage, will you continue to build the (relatively)new College? Will you seek power for yourself in the form of ancient artifacts that previous Mages gave their lives and sanity to create? Or do you seek to destroy all Imaginators to usher in the new era of man?

You live in the grand Empire of Minos(Rome basically, except everything with the govt. works the way it was intended to., the Republic, the Emperor, etc.), a land that stretches the length and breadth of the Known World. You were each born into families that you were then taken from at an early age to control your Imaginations before you destroyed yourselves. You train until the age of 15, when you are considered an adult. During that time you are taught to control your powers, as each Mage has only a certain amount of Imaginings(as your "spells" are called) before they Burn Out(ie, go insane, catatonic, or completely cease existing immediately). You are taught how to defend yourselves, sometimes incorporating your Imaginings into your weapons, though that is rare. Depending on how powerful you are, your basic mindset, and the way you use your Imagination.

More cautious members of your Order will live longer lives than headstrong ones, the weaker in Imagination having more at their disposal, though much weaker Imaginings. The most powerful Mages are not known to live much past 20, the rest averaging out at 35. As such, the head of the Imaginators was constantly shifting in ages past until the reign of the man/woman who all now refer to them as Ruby since he/she gave their life to infuse their lifeforce to place into their signature Ruby necklace.

You are all mages, who are at differing levels of power.

Ruby - strongest, able to level one city including people once in you life, least amount of spells before Burning out, often referred to as the Phoenix Division.20 is normally max age

Emerald - next strongest,a few city blocks in terms of destructive power, half a dozen times in your life, on average, slightly more spells before Burnout, average age of 25

Amethyst - next, more spells, maybe a few buildings if you're strong enough, often called the Finesse class of mages because they have to figure out how to best use your much less effective spells for the best use.30 is average death age

Jet - the weakest, but also the most time before death, averaging 35, able to outright kill maybe a half dozen people in their lifetime.

You all wear two kinds of gems on yourself at all times, your class jewel, and what you consider your personal gem, these can be in the form of earrings, piercings, necklaces, amulets, rings, etc.

there are two factions you each have a choice of joining, The College, and the employ of the Empire. The shadow organization of Imaginators, the Aquarians, who wish to purge all Imaginators from the face of the earth, including themselves, and free men from their "oppression" are not a choice to start off joining, but may be available depending on your choices later in-game.
Currently headed by Adam Ginseng, a man of integrity, he demands unwavering loyalty to the guild, particularly since you have been granted the land to build your place of learning. Short clipped blonde and goatee that is graying, but brown eyes that still sparkle.

You work off of contracts, both from the Empire and independent citizens. You currently have built a large barracks, able to hold just over 200, and a half-finished building where classes are held for the younger initiates.

You are directly under the purview of the Emperor, or the Republic, as suits your wont, the only limit here is that only Amethyst and Jet class Imaginators can be here simply because of average lifespans and the College's insistence to keep Ruby and Emerald mages under their care.

With this, you have a lifetime of anything you want, you have a house owned by the Empire that has been loaned to you in exchange for your services, you are paid well, and are immune from the law of the Empire, but not the Empire itself.
1.You must not mess with free will(no mind control, forcing people to do what you want through magic, etc.)

2.Each of you has only a finite amount of magical power in you, conserve it if you can.

3.Should you create an Artifact, be prepared to accept the consequences.

4.Do not betray your brothers or sisters of Imagination, no matter what.

5.You are there to help whoever hires your services, do whatever you must to complete the contract, so long as it does not conflict with the previous laws
Name:
Class:Ruby,Emerald,Amethyst,Jet
Age:
Gender:
Appearance:what you look like, and describe at least two different outfits you normally wear.
Mindset:your basic outlook on life, which also determines your use of magic and weapons.
Personality:somewhat determined by your Mindset, but open to variety.

Magic Specialty: You all have the ability of gods, but you each have a special type of thinking that you excel in, what is it? Destructive thoughts, animal affinity, shapechanging, etc.

Weapon of Choice: You are each trained in a certain weapon you are at the very least, proficient with, at best, you're one of many experts in the college. Make this whatever you want it to be, but be warned, many weapons will draw attention to yourself, which you do not always want, but feel free to experimenting with what you feel like

Faction: College, or Empire.

College-Life: what has happened to you while you were in school, any of you that wished to know who your parents were were given your files, so you may know who your family is. You come from all levels of life, from miner's to senators, fishermen to moneychangers, make it up.

Name: Remus
Class:Ruby
Age:16
Gender:Male
Appearance:Remus is small for the power he wields, only 5 feet tall, and barely a hundred pounds. He wears his neck-length hair in a leather strap, with a small ruby attached to the center of it. he wears a turquoise studded earring. He always carries a bow and quiver on his person

Casual clothing: brown, nondescript cloak that hangs to the ground, with the ends frayed from being dragged. Underneath the cloak, he wears a linen shirt and pants that fit him perfectly, a belt holds an assortment of daggers.

Second casual clothes: same cloak, but underneath he wears a leather vest that hold more daggers and fitted pants that reach to his knees, he rarely wears shoes or sandals of any kind.

Mindset: Do what he can to make the College great and respected by all. He knows he doesn't have much time left

Personality:Quiet, introverted, Remus prefers to not be noticed if he can help it, mostly because of his size.

Magic Specialty: Remus specializes in the wind and weather. The direction of the winds is very important to him

Weapon of Choice:A master of the bow, he can kill a man at over a hundred paces without the use of his magic. With it, he can guide an arrow to the heart of any man within a half-mile of his position. He has a fair hand with the daggers he carries, but relies on his bow.

Faction: College Of Imagination.

College-Life: Remus came to the College at an early age, early enough that he doesn't remember any life but this. He was picked on account of his size, but found his calling in the bow and ever since he sank his first arrow into the target at thirty paces, they knew to fear him when he had a bow in his hands. He gladly found his birth family, he has a brother working as a caravaneer in his father's business, and a sister married to a wealthy merchant with three children of her own, twin boys and a girl. His mother died giving birth to him and when he was barely a year old, they sent him off after he wrecked the family house without moving, he simply imagined it destroyed and it was so.

Here is my sheet.

Name: Virgil Titus
Class: Emerald
Age: 17
Gender: Male
Appearance: He is olive-skinned and 5?11 with green eyes. He has long raven hair that he keeps in a braid reaching the bottom of his shoulder-blades, but sometimes hanging over his shoulder in front. Virgil is thinly built but with layers of hard slim muscle like a track runner.

Casual outfit: a hooded cloak woven of thick brown material with no shirt under it and a tanned pair of tough hide pants. Sandals on the feet.

His class stone (Emerald) is worn on a small earring in his right ear, and his personal stone is a regular clear diamond, worn on his right index finger.

?Action? outfit (labor, training, battle): No shirt, leather wrist guards and gloves, loin-cloth made of leopard pelt and stitched with leather, plus a belt with holsters for his weapons. And finally, he wears the same sandals as before, but now with leather grieves.

Mindset: He wants to be the best he can be and do the most he can with his short life.

Personality: He is a predator, like a jungle cat. He is not an overly competitive asshole, but he feels if you don?t have the power to earn and keep what is yours, you don?t deserve to have it. He believes it isn?t enough to say something is yours, you need to prove you have the strength to own it.

Magic Specialty: Virgil is clever in the way he saves his magic. He uses it to enhance his physical abilities and hinder his opponents. He can strike much faster and harder than a normal person by using magic. In the time a normal man has drawn his sword, Virgil has already severed his hand in one blow and before the first drop of blood hits the ground, he can break their spine with a knee strike. He can also change the focus of his power, enhancing his speed significantly at the cost of some strength, or becoming terrifyingly strong while sacrificing speed. But usually, he spreads these powers out evenly and remains several notches above a normal man in all aspects. But if he truly pushes himself and uses more magic, he can be higher by ten fold in every physical aspect than a normal man.

Weapon of Choice: Knives on chains The kind in the middle that there is two of. [http://i.telegraph.co.uk/multimedia/archive/01216/knives-chains_1216808i.jpg]

Faction: College

College-Life: Virgil was taken into the collage after his mother died of a fever, and he didn?t know his father. He didn?t really have much in the way of friends, so he had to fight for everything and prove his worth. This idea was only compounded in him when he asked for the records on his father and found that he was a lazy drunk wealthy slave trader that never did any of his own work, and his mother had been a slave that had been freed so his father wouldn?t have to deal with the burden of her pregnancy. He went to see his father, and when the gluttonous old bastard denied any relation to Virgil, the angry young man hit him so hard in the face he knocked out three of his teeth and left him unconscious on the floor. That day Virgil decided he would not be like his father, and the only way to live, was by the strength of your own back.

Name:Luna
Class:Amethyst
Age:40
Gender:Female
Appearance: Standing 5 ft 3', her skin is extremely pale, white almost. Has light blue eyes, matching the hue of the moon. Has long, pure white flowing hair down just past her shoulders. Her skin and appearance don't age past a look of 25 because of one spell. Luna wears both of her Jewels in a Head piece seen in the battle wear pic below. The Class stone is two Amethyst set on either side of a main crescent shaped moon stone in the middle.

Relaxed wear: A long robe with a deep neck, simple in it's light "Moon" blue color.
"Battle" wear:
Researcher field clothing:

Mindset:Tries to extend her life for as long as possible, holding off madness for as long as possible, even resorting to another mage's medicine creation to try and fend it off.

Magic Specialty: Mainly mechanical creations, with a few exceptions coming her later years with the thoughts of death floating around in her head, heaven and hell. Angelic wings or a demonic pair can be used for gliding in situations. Her machines also began to take on such appearances.

Weapon of Choice: A short one handed sword with a moonstone at the bottom of the hilt.

Faction: College

College-Life: Began her life at the college at an infant age and has developed her fascination with her mechanical creations at a young age. Being one of the oldest Mages at the College, Luna is looked up to by allot of mages for her age and accomplishment with it. She used very little Magic in her life, only in times of dire need and when she was training. Most of everything that luna has was bought by her with money earned from contract work. In her spare time, she tries to keep herself fit by doing a sort of free running, climbing and such.
Now that she's nearing her final years, madness is beginning to set in and Luna has to resort to another mage's medicine to keep it from consuming her. Any major amount of magic used wrecks havoc on her body a bit after its used.
This alright?

Curious, how man spells would a Ruby be capable of using in his lifetime. Also just for clarification how powerful is a ruby because I had an idea but it would require some serious juice to pull off.

Looks fine, I'm going to tell you that the wings aren't going to allow you fly unless you use your Imagination or someone else does, more along the lines of gliding otherwise. Also, a BurnOut is a sudden shift, it doesn't really come on gradually, except in very rare cases, and those are kept at the College under close watch. Just so you know

A Ruby is the most powerful of them, able to level a city at least once in their life before going mad, catatonic, etc., also they'd be the creators and inhabitants of the most powerful of artifacts, the legendary ones if you will. As for what else they could do, they can change major weather patterns, for some reason I've got some kind of writer's block as to what they could do.

As for how many spells they can cast, it depends on a variety of factors, including how powerful the Ruby is, there's classes within classes here, and mostly it varies from person to person. Some Emerald's have been known to cast just as few spells as Ruby's, or as many as Amethysts. It's not really known how many spells any person can cast, simply because the research could easily cost the sanity of at least five Mages, but it's assumed that each can cast a large amount.

Also, I'm not telling you because that discourages people jumping from one place to another with magic, auto-killing bosses, etc. Plus, it helps with the roleplay aspect of this. just put up a sheet and I'll let you know if your idea needs tweaking.

Good except for where he has his class stone and personal stone, the class stone must be visible at all times(to keep regular people from getting screwed over) the personal stone can be hidden if you want it to be, but you need to have it on you. I'm going to say you're from the high North originally, very warm, almost jungle-like.

I fixed the stone part. Also, If this is the roman empire, then wouldn't the high north just be the British isles? I don't think they are very jungle-y.

The reason i set up her declining health is because of her age. It also sets up a sub-plot or backstory for her if you will. She's been working on a large project for a long amount of time, as a last resort to dieing. I understand the gliding wing aspect of it too, her creations becoming more and more Heaven and hell oriented is just showing her decline into madness.

Just so you both know, the little research that has been done has only been able to figure out that only the more powerful artifacts allow their creators to live forever, many of them going mad anyways. Just so you know, not trying to discourage anything, only for your characters to know.

(This is Player Knowledge only) The only artifact known to exist right now that allows an extended life is the Head Imaginator's Ruby necklace, even though the current HI is actually known to be Amethyst Class, the amulet has extended his life considerably past his death date, at the moment he is in his late 50's.

And Demonjazz, there's not so much a library at the moment as boxes of books underground. Again, just so you know, the college is still in the middle of construction. There is a Librarian however, two actually, one's a Jet like you, name of Adrian Helios, around 30, the other is a Ruby known to have lived far past his death, simply because he's refused to Imagine very much in his 40 years, there's only a few people that know his real name anymore that are alive, every one else, he's known as the Book Master, Librarian works too. Very timid, tries to use his magic as little as possible.

Name: Barito Zing
Class:Amethyst
Age: 20
Gender: Male

Appearance: A white male about 5'8 with a thick head of jet black hair. Leaning on the skinny side, he has 3 different outfits. A grey hood and cloak with matching grey pants and sandals for normal out on the town activity's, a set of armor made out of scraps of whatever Barito can find, buy, or take (currently made out of mostly leather armor with the holes in it stitched up with scraps of chain mail)for combat jobs, and a colorful tunic and shirt for formal occasions. His class stone is in the same spots as his personal stone (a pearl) which is worked into his cloths in a different way for each outfit. His normal cloths have it as a pin on the shirt, The armor as a peace on the forehead of his helmet, and on the formal dress stitched to the left arm of his shirt on the shoulder.

Mindset:He is loyal (for the most part) to whoever gives him what he wants. Be it food, money, shelter, information, or work. He isint afraid to kill, but he knows not to resort to violence as his first option. Fairly smart, agile, and calculating, mentally he has no real weakness. The biggest indirect threat to him, is his abnormal week immune system. He tries not to talk about it, lest the person he tells turn on him and use it against him.

Magic Specialty: His tendency to think about a situation and taking the safest way through it (most of the time running) manifests itself in the form of illusions. One of his favorite tricks he learned by practicing at it for years is to create a ghostly copy of himself to ether scare or distract opponents. He also learned a way to phase through walls, altough he presumes that it takes a lot out of him, and he's only ever done it twice. Since most of his magic is just pictures and not real matter or affecting anything physically, he thinks that it's probobly less dangerous to him then most other magic. Whether or not this is actually true, is still unknown. (As in I have no idea if it is or not and I'm asking the GM. Ether way, Barito still wont know.)

Weapon of Choice: As a rogue like character, he uses a dagger as his melee weapon, but his favorite weapon is a set of 10 ornate throwing knives, gifted to him by his first teacher at the college. He takes extreme pride in them and maintains them like his children. The only time the leave his side, is when there in the body of his opponents.

Faction: The collage

College-Life: Barito was the only child of his family of fishermen in a average coastal village. At age 7, his family willingly turned him over to the collage without trouble. Barito did not go so easily. He tried to attack the college staff who came for him and had to be subdued by a sleeping potion. At the collage, he was told that he couldn't get out until he was 15 and that once he was, he could see his family again. After that, he was an average student and for the most part, nothing that noteworthy. That is, until the beginning of what was supposed to be his last year at the collage. He had been in contact with his family, sending letters back and forth every month or so, until the collage received word that his family had dropped right of the map. There house was home to a different family, there fishing taken over by another one still, and no evidence of what happened to them, or where they went. The college tried to hide it from him. They failed. In a fit or rage, sorrow, and anger at the college for lying to him, Barito went on an absolute rampage, his power magnified by his raging emotions. He and his illusions haunted the collage for a week until his first teacher at the collage was able to calm him down, sacrificing her life to do so. They said that because of his explosion of magic, he probobly wouldn't live past 24 even though he was an amethyst. His guilt from his teachers death, and thirst to find out what happened to his family, caused him to run away from the collage.

He has now been searching for 5 years, and found nothing. He has all but abandoned hope that he will ever find them. What he doesn't know, is that this loss of drive is just the way his corruption is manifesting itself, even though he keeps telling himself that he will know when the corruption starts, and be able to stop it somehow. He now has been living in a house in a town about 20 miles away from the collage, and about 35 miles away from his family's old home for the last 6 months. He takes jobs of all sorts and has a scrap shop in the market of the town.

Name: Arel Nolan
Class: Jet

Age: 38

Gender: Male

Appearance: Arel is relatively tall, standing just under six-foot-two. He keeps his greying hair short but disheveled is his haste, with a small, pointed salt-and-pepper beard. Concealed by the long -and some say stereotypical- robes he prefers, Arel keeps the shortsword he has used for many years. The pinky finger of each of Arel's hands bears a small gold band, both inset with the lignite of his class.

Normally, Arel wears a set of almost-ceremonially robes of pure, some say supernatural, light-consuming, black. The robe is trimmed in a soft gold and the collar is slightly fringed in fine, white down. Beneath the cloak, Arel dons a solid, dark green tunic and matching pantaloons, slashed by a black sash of cloth similar to that of his robe. His boots are also black, though not like that of the robe or sash. Occasionally, Arel may wear a copper circlet also bearing tiny jet stones; why he does so is unknown. When asked why he chooses such apparel, Arel will only offer that it makes him comfortable. Most believe it is to conceal his shortsword.

When he absolutely must wander beyond the walls of the College, Arel prefers something minimalist. He dons a dingy-white, almost grey, long-sleeved tunic and matching pantaloons. He also trades his boots with a pair of soft and well-worn sandals. Still he goes nearly nowhere without his blade and the two gold bands on his hands. Even with his armament, such trappings leave Arel ill at ease, especially on the streets of the Empire.

Mindset: Arel is loyal to the College to a fault, and will act in its favor as much as necessary. He is also helpful to the students and other members of the College, as well as very knowledgeable, having spent his unusually long tenure exploring what ever logs he could find of his predecessors at the College. Because of this, Arel shies from direct combat whenever possible. Still, due to what he perceives as his impending doom -an event many frequently remind him of- Arel is fervently searching for something, anything, to prolong his life. Perhaps service to the College is not his only goal.

Personality: Generally quiet, though when approached by a subject he enjoys Arel can became quite loud and bombastic. He can also be exceedingly paranoid, and prefers to scout the intentions of others before he makes his own known. Arel is also exceedingly secretive about his research.

Specialty: In his pursuit of knowledge, Arel has developed a magic that allows him to "read" many things, including just about any object and even the atmosphere around him. Though what he is capable of reading is often of limited use depending on the location and age of what he reads, Arel is typically capable of turning almost any information to his advantage. This is especially true when Arel lays his hands upon his favorite medium: blood. Arel must be able to be in physical, skin contact with his medium for an indeterminate amount of time and needs extreme focus to be most effective.

Weapon: Arel prefers the use of an old but well-kept shortsword he keeps on his person at almost all times. Other than that, Arel is skilled in the use of many small arms, if a bit out of practice.

College-Life: Arel remembers no life but the College. And he prefers to keep it this way. Having spent nearly his entire life in an attempt to better the College and its standing in the eyes of the people, since he turned thirty Arel has become drastically more introverted. Despite this, Arel is glad to help any and all who have need of his knowledge or expertise. Though he was once ridiculed for his brash and outlandish behavior, since he has mellowed almost all in the College have had to give him some grudging respect. Arel looks only forward and acts only in ways he believe will benefit the College. Still, it is difficult to look to the future when the sword of death dangles just barely behind the line of sight, waiting for that one, fatal moment.
My attempt at a character. I wouldn't be surprised if something needed change or elaboration.

Edited with what I could think of first. Probably needs changed again. Just let me know.

Double edited for a weapon section. Oversight is as oversight does.

Good except for the sword, go ahead and say it's heirloom, a hand-me-down,throw away he found on the side of the road or even some mildly famous warrior's sword, but magical artifacts almost always have a soul inside them, and they are kept under guard at the College.

There are only a few artifacts known to be carried by Imaginators outside of the Ruby, and most of them are either wanted by the College or the Empire. The few that aren't are kept under close watch by the Emperor or the Ruby.

I'd say to maybe change your unique magic, seeing as how we've already got two other illusion specialists, and there's a point where redundancy gets either annoying to the player or the gm.

Suggestions if you find them mildly interesting could include, changing written words, being able to create doors that lead to a pocket dimension that only you can enter, and appear a few yards away from where you entered, or the control of inanimate objects, within reason of course. Maybe simply being able to alter small amounts of materials to create completely new ones, even creating heat out of cold is useful in many situations.

Other than that, I like it, I honestly didn't expect that many people to choose Jet class.

TO EVERYONE: If you didn't understand what I said earlier, I may have written it wrong compared to what I was thinking, I don't know, but when a BurnOut occurs, you lose all magical ability, you go mad, catatonic, etc. that will be up to you if it happens, and the madness isn't a subtle act that takes years to happen, it just automatically happens, you snap and go limp, start laughing at nothing, etc. Now I understand a few of the characters, the ones that are older, getting slightly paranoid and worrying about their inevitable fate, but not everyone is going insane.

Sorry. I meant for the sword not to be an artifact, but to have maybe been forged by someone knowledgeable in fire magic or something. Changed anyway. Magic probably needs changed again, too; I honestly just sort of skimmed the other characters with my original. My bad.

And, if the "To Everyone" thing was mostly because of me, I just wanted to make it obvious that he isn't going crazy because of his impending Burn Out, he is going a little crazy due to the impending nature of it. You know, driving himself maaaaaad. I tried to fit a little Sword of Damacles in there, too. Don't think it worked too well...
