Mine cost around $260 at the time, and it was a GTX 560 Ti.
I have that.
£200ish over here across the pond.

Great card. Bought for Skyrim/BF3 to look pretty on.

I have a Nvidia GeForce GT240, 1GB DDR5, and at the time it costed R999(R1000), which is about $148.55 US, and i'm happy with it. it can still play every game on full with a decent frame rate.

EDIT: my uncle has this one though
it's insane!, it'a actually 2 top-of-the-range cards linked together, there are only 3 downsides to this card, it weighs a tonne, costs about $1,931.25, and requires 3 power plugs :p

I can't remember what my card is at home.

However, when I built the machine in 2007, I bought an EVGA GeForce 8800GTX for $430 after rebate (~£267).

Honestly, go either GeForce 4xx-5xx or Radeon 57xx-66xx series and you're golden. Range'll be about £160-280, with Nvidia topping the mark most of the time.

i went from ~30 FPS on Portal with on-board to over 60 with a $50 video card. what model GPU do you have right now? (or is it on-board)
I have an ATI Radeon 3000 graphics. Anyone that has had this will know that it isn't the best.

Powering 3 screens ...
check the charts @ tomshardware for what you need.
with your pc anything over 200 bucks is a waste of money.

I've got a sexy XFX AMD Radeon HD 6870 XXX edition that cost about $160. It even came with Dirt 3. It's a bit too powerful as my CPU's stock cooler is now running at around 6000 rpm under a load now and it's so loud that it can be heard over most of my games. So I'm going to get a Scythe Mugen 2 to calm the ************ down. I get fucking great performance though, Dawn of War II: Retribution runs at 120 fps average on highest settings and other newer games also run lovely.

Winfast GTX 260 which cost me around 200E a year ago.

I'm planning to get a MSI 560GTX Ti Hawk in a few months to get a proper upgrade for the upcoming games.

I looked at games on steam and they generally want Nvidia.
No, they really don't... that's just NVidia paying money to people to slap their logo on the games... ATI cards run just as well...

I still have a GeForce 9800 GTX+ that I picked up for mega cheap thanks to a gift card. If I'd had to pay full price, though, I would have gotten a Radeon. Radeons will give you the most bang for your buck, pricewise, although their drivers and software have gone downhill since AMD bought ATI and you might have issues if you get unlucky. GeForce cards are more expensive but (generally) you'll experience fewer software issues.

Mine cost about $400
It's a radeon hd 5870 with custom cooling and overclocked, it was new at the time and is cheaper now. It runs 90% of games maxed out.

I've got an ATI Radeon HD5770, it was about $150. Decent mid-range card, especially since I couldn't justify buying a card that would be outdated in three months.
Same card and justification I used when I got that for a friend's PC he was having me plan.

The aformentioned ATI is nice but a GeForce 460 or thereabouts is a nice buy too. Personally I go for a more reliable brand like Asus, Gigabyte or XFX model. Those are still around $150-$180
I couldn't, in good conscience, buy a nVidia card, my system uses an AMD CPU.

Add that OP, you said that your system is running an AMD CPU, use an ATI card, they work better together, just as Intel CPUs and nVidia cards do, you'll get more bang for your buck.

?80 Nvidia 9600GT. Runs everything I've thrown at it well, probably the newest games it's gotten are the bioware ones.

I'd never pay more than about ?150 for one, though I've a job now, so maybe I will.

You're usually safe enough to go with a card from the last generation or a cheap one from this generation.

And its true that the games will run as well with ATI. Nvidia just buy sponserships and have their slogan.

Whiiiiich is complete rubbish. I'm running a nV450GTS with a Phenom II X4, works fine, pushes hard. Got some facts to back that statement up or are you just sprouting it from your imagination?
