I've been a DMC fan for quite a while. However, I feel I may be running against the common grain in my oppinion of the series simply becasue of which one I feel is the best game overall.

Many self-styled hardcore DMC fans believe the first one is the best and most definitive game in the series, by a combination of gameplay, characterisation and other such factors.

In my oppinion, however, DMC 3 should claim the title of the best game in the series. Don't get me wrong, 1 was a kick-ass game, but I think 3 just clips it. Let's not forget, however, that the fourth one would have been in with a good chance if only Nero had been omitted from the game. All the best bits of the previous games with a few nice extras thrown in (ability to switch styles at will, for example).

I can't be the only one that thinks the games are thus, in ascending order of awesome;
Two, Four, One, Three.

For me, from worst to best, it goes:

DMC2,DMC,DMC4,DMC3

While the original was good, it still kind of didnt know what it was doing. So it's constant action gameplay flip-floping with its original Resident Evil gameplay kind of screwed it up for me.

DMC3 is easily the best, with the best story, atmosphere, and gameplay. DMC4 could have been better, it just had a few small things holding it back (the reusing of bosses/areas, and lack of costumes)

That's just my opinion though.

I have only played 3 and 4 and DMC 3 easily beats 4 in my opinion. It is much more solid and enjoyable overall.

I think what a lot of people use in a defence of 1 is Dante's character; it's a good combination between serious-guy and arrogant-guy. It works well and makes the game a lot more enjoyable.

Interesting that you didn't list Nero as one of the fails of DMC4. But I agree wholeheartedly about the re-using levels. Pain in the ass to finally get to be Dante, then only be allowed to play Nero's missions in reverse. It felt like the game was saying; "Here's a new character to play as. He's a whiny tosser and you'll hate him but you can only play as the awesome character when you're finished with this guy. Oh look - he failed. Guess you'll have to go over the whole thing again as the awesome guy to fix the mess."
Reeks of the team just running out of ideas.

Apart from that, my other gripe is the dice game. WASTE OF TIME!

Get thee to a DMC1, good sir! :)

But buy it for PC so you get some resolution. My playstation copy has pixels the size of small children's fists!
And stay far, far away from DMC2...

From best to worst:

DMC3, DMC, DMC2, DMC4

DMC3 just mastered the blend of sword, gun, and acrobatics. It was all awesome. It still would be the best game even if it didn't have a story. The story is a nice addition because we get Dante's attitude but it is unnecessary to why I think the game is good.

DMC was a good third person fighting game. Nothing truly amazing or innovative but good nonetheless. I really didn't use the sword or move at all and just shot everything.

DMC2 tried to balance the fighting a little bit by making the guns less overpowered which worked. However you had to have the booklet or guide open on your lap while fighting to make the sword fighting fluid or fun. I did end up mixing sword fighting in between my shooting but it was never fluid enough to have it as a main resort.

DMC4 isn't even a DMC game in my opinion.

Same situation and opinion here. Out of curiosity, I asked my friend what he thought about the series, as he played them all. He says 1 might be his favorite, but other than that, he said he finds any of the games enjoyable as long as they don't involve dice.

He didn't say it, but it looked like his muscles tensed up when he mentioned said dice.

I agree with you man i was really digging the fourth one then lost all interest once i took control of Dante but the kick ass action and brotherly rivalry of the third one makes it my favorite

Best quote from DMC 1

*Dante holds Trish's lifeless body looks up and screams at the top of his lungs.
"I should of filled her dark heart with LIGHT!!!!"

I never got into the sequels (not 3 or 4, even) because Dante had grown tiresome as a protagonist. He was sort of unique and compelling in the original game, but they've amplified his sass and "wit" to the point where I really just want to let him die constantly.

Not played 2, so cant comment on that. Do agree with rest of list though.

4 would have easily beat it had nero not been there. Trickster to get behind them switching to swordmaster and throw them in the air switchin to gunslinger to keep them there. That was cool.

Shame I just spent most of the game mashing the 'throw' button as nero.

I don't understand all the Nero hate, kind of like how I don't stand all the Vergil love. But he wasn't that bad a character. He was pissed off cause of the shit that was going on, and when his love interest was taken away.

He was also created because they needed a way to appeal to new people, and they didnt feel the Devil Bringer would fit with Dante.

But yes, I do love Dante a lot more, and his gameplay was a lot more refined in 4 because of the allowing you to use all the styles and all the weapons on the fly, creating some incredible combos and the like.

If they could have maybe made 4 like how they had 2 (both characters had their seperate story) it would easily beat 3.

[sub][sub][sub]That and the dice game is easy...if you hit it with a Buster, it will always land on the number that was at the top...The More You Know[/sub][/sub][/sub]

You are not that is exactly my order, and I've been with the franchise since the first game came out. And no because I am not a huge fan of Nero is not the reason Four is below 1...1 just set the entire world up so nicely where as 4 pissed me off till I could finally play Dante...and then lose him again for the final boss...no Devil May Cry developers...I did not enjoy playing the punk kid(oh wait...it is the reason 4 is below 1). I expected much more personally...

So now I'm just waiting for DMC5 to beat 3 as first place and then DMC6 to fall short of DMC 4. Every other game created is a stinker xD

The Nero hate stems from the fact that yes, whilst a change was nice, the niceness is overlapped by the fact that DMC's main market is Western. We like kick-ass characters like Dante, not whiny schoolboys like Nero (which the Japanese market are into). The Vergil love stems from the fact that he is every bit as (if not more) cool than his twin brother. Dante seems too cocky and arrogant next to his calm, co-ordinated evil counterpart. Plus Vergil has awesome katana skills...

Best DMC ripoff. Still an awesome game regardless.

Why not?
Sure you fight demons in third person mode. That is about all they have related in my opinion(they also have Dante, but you don't start with him so it doesn't count. It is kind of like you have to unlock him then it just seems like he is there for a cameo which isn't helped by the fact that you just do the same levels in reverse.). The fighting style was severely dumbed down. The fighting was simpler than DMC2 which was "levitate with bullets, swing sword, repeat". In DMC4 the fighting style was "grab with hand, throw on ground, repeat" which was all one button. Sure it isn't the only thing available but it was the fastest thing to kill shit with. When the fastest way to kill something with is a single button there is no point for me to use anything else. In conclusion, the fighting style is nowhere near the same, the characters are different, and the elements that made DMC1-3 good are gone.

I loved all of the Devil May Cry titles. My favourite is definitely 2 though. It fucking horrified me. I don't mean scared so much, but the bosses were AWFULLY bullshit and every time I got to one I died inside. Especially that blue thing with the two wolves, and the demon-tank thing.

I liked the atmosphere of 1 and 2.

Yeah, I'm going to say 2 is the best.

2, 1, 3, 4.

That's from best to worst.
