I've been a DMC fan for quite a while. However, I feel I may be running against the common grain in my oppinion of the series simply becasue of which one I feel is the best game overall.
Many self-styled hardcore DMC fans believe the first one is the best and most definitive game in the series, by a combination of gameplay, characterisation and other such factors.
In my oppinion, however, DMC 3 should claim the title of the best game in the series. Don't get me wrong, 1 was a kick-ass game, but I think 3 just clips it. Let's not forget, however, that the fourth one would have been in with a good chance if only Nero had been omitted from the game. All the best bits of the previous games with a few nice extras thrown in (ability to switch styles at will, for example).
I can't be the only one that thinks the games are thus, in ascending order of awesome;
Two, Four, One, Three.
Uhh, actually it's the common opinion among DMC fans that DMC3 genuinely is the best in the series. Almost nobody debates that. While DMC1 was pretty good and has the quintessential storyline of the bunch, both its story and its mechanics are pretty darn clumsy due to its being a really early PS2 game. DMC3 is widely regarded as having perfected the formula, developing further on the style-based combo system, incorporating different play-styles and skill-sets into Dante's lineup as well as different weapons, and showcasing far superior cinematic direction, voice acting, and overall storytelling. It's not exactly an epic masterpiece as far as writing goes, but it's damn fun and manages to have a fair amount of emotional sway to it as the player learns about Dante's struggle with his twin brother. It's also technically the first game in the series chronologically.
DMC2 is the curious one, because it wasn't even developed by the proper Devil May Cry team. Series creator Hideki Kamiya et al had absolutely nothing to do with it; Capcom put a different group on it and didn't even
tell them there was a Devil May Cry 2 in development until release, hence why it just straight-up sucked.
DMC4... is a bit unnecessary. Nero brought with him a lot of interesting mechanics, Dante's new weapons are awesome, the bosses were top notch, but the story just wasn't there as much as it was in 1 and 3 and nobody really liked Nero's "rescue the princess" scenario. It didn't help that the second half of the game is basically just the first half in reverse. Lazy.
My order from least to best is DMC2, DMC1, DMC4, and DMC3, personally, but that's mostly because 4 has the most familiarly Devil May Cry gameplay elements for me.

I agree that i believe Devil may cry 3 to be the best of the series, Devil may cry 1 came in second, after that was Devil may cry 2. Number 4...kinda felt more like an expansion/mission pack rather then an entire new game to me. They could have done ALOT more then they did, and what did we get? Repeated bosses, repeated levels, and...oh yeah, we have to fight those bosses AGAIN just to get to the last boss.
On that note, if you are all curious about where devil may cry 5 went...well, Capcom is afraid of making money and a game that would sell like hotcakes, so we won't see it for a while. Until then, we have to make do with him fighting deadpool in marvel vs capcom 3.

Best DMC game is Bayonetta.

Best DMC ripoff. Still an awesome game regardless.
How is it a ripoff if its made by the same Director/Creator of the first Devil May Cry? Is the Metal Gear Rising a Metal Gear Solid ripoff? Is Warcraft 3 a ripoff of Starcraft?
-_- Bayonetta is never allowed to be mentioned Alongside Devil may cry...EVER, you hear me? While gameplay is similiar, they are in essence two different games, set in two different universes, set with two different characters...and the BIGGEST two differences: One fights angels, one fights demons. And one fells the need to be stripperiffic to get our attention and have us play the fucking thing, the other is just pure unfiltered badass.
And yes, Metal gear Rising is ripping off Metal gear solid and Warcraft 3 ripped off starcraft!
Nooo, Metal Gear Solid Rising is a completely different game with a completely different type of action, and StarCraft's game mechanics were derived from Warcraft 1 and 2.
Bayonetta, while kind of
sort of similar to DMC, uses Las Vegas burlesque shows as its inspiration for game mechanics where DMC tends more towards extreme sports; where DMC is about performing strings of tricks and is sort of like the Tony Hawk of action games, Bayonetta is about choreography and building spectacle and trying to finish every single foe off in the most extravagant manner possible. It's not even a terribly subtle difference given the
huge difference in the two games' weapon schemes. DMC: Two swords, two guns, one style for support, flip between weapons on-the-go. Straightforward, plain. Bayonetta: Mix and match weapons on arms and legs, corresponding to punch/kick type moves (light/heavy attacks).
Every weapon significantly alters the moveset it's attached to, creating a huge mixture of potential combos from just two decisions and in turn significantly altering the way you move and choreograph attacks. While it's not very straightforward in terms of fighting style and, yes, Bayonetta is a FAR more obnoxious character, and, yes, the story of Bayonetta is COMPLETE nonsense, and, yes, the heavy/light attack scheme is lifted straight out of Ninja Gaiden and God of War before it (albeit with a BIG twist), I can guarantee you that Bayonetta, like all of Kamiya's works except Devil May Cry, is a game the likes of which you've never seen before and will never, ever see again. I suggest you learn to appreciate that.
