To Imitation Saccharin: Drop it. Your point is logical, as someone who has debated good ol' Taxi Driver before, I must tell you that you have already crossed the point where he calls you illogical ergo the argument is dead and the whole thing will devolve into semantics.

Your argument is sound and makes sense. What the fuck is the movie trying to say? It can't have it both ways, right? Do people suck or not? What's the point of people being pansies and then not being pansies? Why can't the Nolans make up their damn minds?!

Yes, they do, and they don't. People are scared, petty, dumb, but can shine. It's not a clear cut argument, just as Taxi Driver is saying(or at least that's what I think he's saying). The Nolans presented an ugly dichotomy akin to saying:

mud is moist earth, and you use earth to plant apple trees. Apple trees are good ergo mud is not always bad.

Did that make sense to you?

It could possibly reveal that people act different in different situations
It could, if the situations where in fact different, and not almost identical moral situations with only the response changing for no reason.

They're both prisoner's dilemmas, except once the public responds "Ya, fuck that other guy" and the next time sticks to his theivy code.

Once again reason eludes your text.
I'd say irony again, but you know. Don't want to become a broken record.

O' you speak so kindly of me. If I argue semantics, it's because whoever I argue against fails at conveying a meaning.
Look, we went through this already, ok?

[I actually deleted something uglier]

YES, everyone fails but you. Perfect argument!

Meh...

Batman is George Bush.
Harvey Dent is Obama.
Gordon is John McCain.
The Joker is terrorism/Osama Bin Laden.
The random thugs are Al Queida.
The Chinese dude was the nation of China.
The people on the boat were trying to decide if they should Democrat or Republican.

There, I solved the riddle...
I was having that exact conversation with my brother.

But sadly, those themes can be pretty much anything. TDK is no more politically motivated than, say, 300(spartaaa!..*cough*).

You're talking about wanting to turn in Batman vs. blowing up the ferries, right?

In both situations, the masses wanted to do the selfish thing. The folks in the ferries quite democratically (by voting or just by shouting really loud) decided to blow each other up, after all. But in the ferry scene someone actually has to stand up and accept responsibility for the action. One person has to push the clicky-thing. It's at that point that the "people are selfish sheep" thing the Joker has been playing for fun breaks down. They'll all say "Yeah, fuck over the other guy if it'll save my ass," but they won't do it.

In the abstract you could say something handwavy like "individual responsibility is the core moral force of the polis, while group instinct is its greatest weakness."

i didn't really think there was a morla in this movie, i don't care for moral in movies. I simply thought it was the greatest movie of all time. And the Joker's acting was nothing short of amazing. I want to marry that acting. (no, not the actor- even if he was alive).
I bought a Joker poster yesterday, it a little bit ruined though because i used it as a sword for a while, but it doesn't atter. Joeker rules!

The Joker may use logic, but he's not driven by it
It is impossible to have "logic" as one's goal in life, hence your defense is invalid.
Try telling that to Spock....

So you're looking to Star Trek for believeable personalities? (yeah the humans are fine but the humans with makeup, I mean, aliens are just stereotypes of their culture which is always focused on some specific attribute or a purity of society which simply can't exist)

Movies can have themes and meaning without having a moral.

Nah, I just wanted to nullify Imitation Saccharin's nullification of my defense.

Good point about Star Trek, though.
