Not at all. Maybe it's just because I'm only nineteen and haven't grown up into the real world yet, but I find myself getting more excited about games. Perhaps it's just because I think gaming is getting better as an artform - dealing with more complex themes and showing better visual design and experimenting with what suits the medium. Maybe I'll find it harder to keep up when I go to uni, but video games are still that little refuge of mine when I just need to unwind.

No, this hasn't hit me yet. I find that killing time between releases that I'm looking forward to by revisiting old games helps me remember why I got into gaming. True, some newer games don't quite hit the same notes as older ones but I have to remember that I'm just growing up.
I doubt I'll ever stop gaming completely but who knows...

I barley have any time for games now.

I call myself a non gaming gamer. I go on the Escapist more than I play games, because on the escapist I can have my work in another tab

I still love gaming, I don't see a decline in gaming just a change in how I game.

My 360 failed, switched to a worse comp, and a very low chance of ever returning to 360. But, I'm just holding out until I can afford a new PC.

Well, that's not surprising. The video games industry has changed a lot over the years. No longer are video games sort of just a "hobbyist" thing. The market has grown and expanded by huge amounts. A lot of it probably started with the Playstation 1, which is when an "outside" company tried to get in on the ever-growing video game craze for the first time. They decided to market themselves towards a more "grown up" and "more serious" tone, which indeed did shake things up a bit.

Sure it still had its share fair of quirky stuff, like the GOOD and ORIGINAL "Spyro the Dragon" games and "Crash Bandicoot" (back when he was bearable) and even Parappa the Rappa. But still, it opened a whole new world of people to market towards, one where loads of money could be made relatively quickly.

Then you have the last generation, where things became even more polarized, what with the Xbox being deemed a mega behemoth hardcore piece of machinery for big tough manly men, and the Gamecube being considered a toy for kiddies, and the Playstation 2 kind of trying to balance itself between the 2. Though the Playstation 2 kind of stunk for the most part, until near the end of its life with Okami I think, and some other cool stuff.

But alas, the industry was growing, and of course, video games are a business. And like any business, they make what will sell. And seeing as how the big gray brown tough FPS's and stuff like it were doing well (especially with popular stuff like Halo coming around), the industry wanted to milk it for all its worth, like any business nowadays would.

And now, here we are, at what is quite possibly THE most polarized generation of games ever. The Playstation 3 couldn't get anymore behemoth-like, the Xbox 360 couldn't fit anymore guns into its rack, or anymore Online-dependant games in its library, and the Wii couldn't be more "baby-ish/family oriented", and that stuff is expanding the market even more, thus making the entire industry even MORE mainstream.

Game systems before used to have loads of variety in their libraries. Yeah, they all had their specialties, but still, there was plenty of variety and fun to be had no matter what system you chose. But not now, though. Its all become so heavily polarized and niche driven that any sort of really variety or experimentation is due to sell far less (thanks to people being the scared, close minded sheep that they are). And this stupid "Hardcore/Casual" thing isn't helping. And considering that games are now a big, multibillion dollar mainstream business, and also considering that games take so much money and time and work to produce, there's no room for bad sales. Money is their first priority, not making good games. If motion sensors and waggle fests and brown/gray macho manly 5 hour =long Halo rip offs are what's selling, then that's what is going to be made.

Really, we only have ourselves (as a whole, not anyone in particular) to blame. They serve us a giant pile o' poo on a silver platter, and we buy it, so they're going to keep making it, and thus the cycle continues...

But don't take my word for it!

I dont game nearly as much as i used to but thats not a bad thing at all I have work, family and other hobbies I can attend to for every three hours on a game I remind myself "could you not be working on your site" or "why not write a review or draw something" anything productive really. Games I treat like a good movie or for a night in after a few drinks with mates the less I frequent the more I enjoy and with a colleciton as large as mine there is plenty of variety.

I think I've noticed myself drifting away over the past year or two, probably as a result of not really caring for the 360 or PS3. At the very least I don't keep up with gaming news so tightly anymore. Maybe I'll go play something on Steam or some game on the virtual console (I love me some 16-bit) to try to reconnect a little.

Wow, I'm 15 and I'm already feeling old.

Good to see an old thread necro'd rather than a new one made. =P

OT: I know what you guys mean, gaming just doesn't have that same enjoyment that it once did. For me, my standards have just increased to a level that can't be obtained, and whenever I play video games I feel this empty sense that I could spend my time much more constructively to do stuff like learn an instrument, or take a study at home course (I work part time btw, not a scumbag on benefits/welfare doing nothing), or something...

It sucks, I miss the days when I could play a game to death and would get so much enjoyment from it. I'm sure it's not a decline in quality, games like Fallout 3 and Ninja Gaiden II and other examples are awesome!

I'm honestly scratching my head at what some people here are talking about in terms of a decline of gaming. Perhaps they can give me some concrete examples? What is a good game from "the old days" and what's an example of a bad game they played recently?

Speaking only for myself, I'm loving the amount of entertainment value I'm getting out of games these days. I just got Dragon Age: Origins and it's already given me hours upon hours of entertainment...and I'm just scratching the surface of that game. Fallout 3 made me dead to the world for almost a month. And with the DLC of Fallout 3, I was dead to the world for another month.

I like the deeper and richer experience I have with games nowadays as well. Back in the day, I remember playing Mega Man for hours upon hours and days upon days. The same with Karateka. How many times did I fight all the way to Lord Akuma, only to be killed by his bird? Or have him kick my butt? But it wasn't because the games were so much longer. It was because those games were so much harder. I would spend hours one just one screen or one part. But that's not really *fun* for me anymore. I don't want to spend a day or two trying to conquer one or two screens. That's just frustrating.

No, to heck with the old days. They can burn.

I spend less time playing games. I remember 5 years ago, all I'd ever do was play and replay games. It was all I did. Now I'm more of a picky gamer, and the quality of most games don't meet up to my standards. You know what needs to be revived. Old fashioned action-adventure platformers. I need a PS3 so I can get the Ratchet & Clank games I've missed out on.

I blame, in no real order, the decline of my gaming on...

My daughter
My job
Reality
Food
Sex
My gamer wife
Sleep

I do miss when I was younger and I just shit wasted all day playing games. Those were the golden days of my youth.

I'm hoping Alpha Protocol will be a really good game, because I'm losing interest in modern games fast.
So yes, I know the feeling.
This is what I'm looking forward to.

It's very underrated atm, but an espionage game that makes use of all the good parts of Mass Effect sounds excellent.
I'm looking forward to it also and I'm glad to see Obsidian getting more time to develop than they did on Knights of the Old Republic 2.

This is more towards the people who have been playing games for a good couple of years now, but have any of you felt yourself slowly pull away from games? Been playing games for 10 years now and I just feel despair every time I look forward to that next game to pull myself out of this slump. With each new title that comes out I find myself even more bored of games overall, even with games like L4D and Mass Effect which I played both for about an hour before being bored, seem just to be pulling me out of the gaming world faster than I try coming back in.
I can understand what you mean, gaming is vastly different from what it used to be.
I love my retro games, in fact I looked for about an hour for my old PS1 power cord so I can play my Favorite game of all time: Xenogears.
However a lot of new games coming out are still just as fun as the old ones were back in the day.
I spent the last 3 weeks playing Dragon Age and I cannot wait to start a new game.
Games have changed, but to me they are still just as fun.

My decline in gaming is inversely related to my increase in bills. As my bills go up my gaming goes down. Sad fact of life that as a college student I'm always broke...blah.

Getting close to 30 I've been experiencing this for a good five years now, and it's a combination of my attention span for games dropping and my expectations rising. Sometimes a lower attention span works well, when I finally got around to playing Shadow of the Colossus this summer, I could play an hour/1 boss every day or two, and could extend that great experience for close to a month. 10-15 years ago I would've breezed through it in a day or two and been slightly disappointed when it ends too soon.

As for higher expectations, the problem I have with this gen is they really aren't bringing anything new to the table. Having started with the NES and Sega Master System, each new console generation expanded the type of games developers could give us. My measuring stick for 'next gen' is could this game have been made for the last gen with lesser graphics? To me, this is a gaming evolution tree:

8-bit - Super Mario 3, Metroid, Legend of Zelda, FF1
16-bit - Super Mario World, Super Metroid, LoZ:ALttP, Sonic, Street Fight 2, FF3/VI, Chrono Trigger
CD/64-bit - Mario 64, LoZ:OoT, FFVII, Tekken 3, Need for Speed, Golden Eye
DVD - Morrowind, FFX, Gran Turismo, Soul Caliber, GTA 3, God of War, Halo
HD - ???

For this HD Gen FPS, fighting, racing, RPG, platforming, etc games are all basically the same but with higher graphics. If there was a poster boy for this it could be GTA 4 or Oblivion. Now there are a few games that qualify, but they're way to few and far between.
