the internet is becoming a virtual reflection of the world, and the thoughts of the average cosmopolitan.
Oh God...

I think the best way to combat the mudslide of rapid fire opinion threads is to create threads that generate good discussion on interesting topics.

Another good suggestion would be to have a forum subsection for these threads like "What's your favorite X" etc... an actual poll subsection or something else so that the "deeper" discussions don't get swallowed up by them.
so we'd have to go into a discussion about what makes a good discussion. i like meta. i also like your idea of splitting the forums up, it would definitely release some of the forum pressure.

Can I point out to the OP that he is on the internet? If you want an intellectual conversation, go to a debate class. Now, I have been on many forums in my day and I have only seen 2 where people actually have decent conversation with each other, and they would be here and a forum that I am a mod at.

But with the last of the 90's kids in high school and the newer generation growing up, things are going to change. The IQ of the internet is going to go down, just cause I've seen some of the stuff that they teach kids these days...so, it's in our best interest that we accept these changes...cause they are going to happen regardless of what we want.

Well just disagreements and stuff. I thought you were with the OP, but yeah, I can't believe people like him get through. As long as they act like the Knight Templar it's okay apparently.

I find it interesting that so many people seem to feel insulted at the OP. It isn't as if he is calling anyone out by name. The reactions of some show me the attitudes they have to the forum. I don't know, it's just interesting, is all.

*Looks around* I don't see much of a problem with anything here. I mean I hardly see the things your complaing about and those are due to people who are just curious. I don't see why every thread has to be an intellectual conversation filled with people flaming each other on each others view of somthing. Somtime's having fun and enjoying yourself here is more important.
i'm not saying every thread has to be, but how would it hurt to have an intellectual discussion happen more than once in a blue moon?

plus, i don't believe that genuinely curious people would make threads about what x you like the best, because their curiosity would drive them further behind things. they'd be interested in the inner workings of people or objects, not of shallow things such as what people like to drink or wear or eat. why do i say this? because i am one of the genuinely curious people.

You know Necroswan got baned for something very much like this, tread carefuly when insulting the community, but lets get on topic.

You complain that the forums getting worse yet you don't even bother to capitalize properly, if you really think things are getting worse then use the report button and try to be better yourself, thats what I do. Like Fire Daemon said, simply saying there is a problem doesn't solve anything.

The quality of the forums may be declining, but in some ways it is improving. As new members flock to this site it continues to change. We have to take the good changes with the bad changes.
True, change is always occurring everywhere, especially on these forums. Whether it's good or bad change is in the Eye of the Beholder.

Personal feelings kind.
Ah, the Charm ray. I think that's the second eye from the left.
I'd rather not look at any of it's eyes.
Well, it's fine looking at the big one in the center. That one doesn't hurt (unless you cast spells, in which case that eye will figuratively emasculate you).

Keenspot had something like that while I was there, but EGS Mayhem was more of a Forum Games and RP section, with the random threads as afterthoughts...
Oh, was it cool there?
It was. I stopped posting there after a while due to RL events (studying abroad), and never really got back into it, which I'm kinda sad about. I've been meaning to transplant some of the forum games I remember from there over to here. Then again, I think I'm still technically a member of the <url=http://web.mac.com/homernet/OotB/Home.html>Order of the Bunny, which was connected to...suddenly, I don't want to explain any more, and am inexplicably filled with shame.

<color=white>On the other hand, I think that site has the only known picture of me on the internet, if a somewhat outdated one (back when I didn't have a goatee).

Let me tell you something, this website is home to one of the most intellectually driven set of forums on the internet. I have yet to find even a single forum on any other site that can compete with the content of this site.
may i ask what general group of users you fall into? are you just a "gamer" or do you have a more specific circle of interest on the internet?

me being a programmer as well as a designer i have seen much better forums out there; but with a much smaller populace. the escapist forums are huge in comparison, but the amount of quality over the years has gone down.
I fall under the "gamer who isn't an avid forum-goer but has seen enough to form an opinion" type of user. Incidentally, which forums are you referring to? I'd certainly like to try them.
the reason for me asking was because the forums i spoke of were more specialized into branches. obviously if you go into such a branch, you'll find discussion more biased towards interests of that branch. a programmer's forum would speak more about programming than of other things, as would a designer's forum of design. if you had any more specific interest than just a general statement such as gamer (not taking into account your profession or other interest), then i could probably help you find some better ones.

No, this <url=http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/KnightTemplar>Knight Templar.

Oh yes he is, look above. He's being rude and uncalled for, and I feel insulted that you would defend him.
I wasn't defending him, just stating that he hasn't said 'X is ruining the forum'. He hasn't even brought up new users which is the usual target. Some people believe that this thread is directed at them while others believe it is not and I find that rather interesting.

This thread however is moving far too fast for my liking and I am not absorbing every post. As I type this no doubt five more posts have been made, possibly more.

*Made some edits.*

You have a Goatee? Damn, I have much more respect for you now.
I met my evil twin online, once. He was clean-shaven.

That confused both of us.
