Juding the Nintendo DSi on its own merits, after trying it out I can clearly say that the DSi is nothing more than what the topic describes.
It is pretty much widely known that the DSi has a pathetic webcamera, (0.3 Megapixels 640x480) significantly reduced battery life and no GBA slot. I will however not judge it by those flaws when there's apparently so many other significant design flaws that clearly makes the DSi stand out as a rushed product.
Here are my short but very significant list of complaints for you people.
These are features that are so lackluster thatt they are unacceptable by any standards.
Weak Multimedia capabilities
You would think that Nintendo would thought of putting a heavy emphesis on connectivity with the much upgraded browser and NDS Shop.
When editing Photos or Audio clips on your DSi, if you wish to send, share or copy the clips/pictures there is no way you can send the files through WiFi to anyother DSi nor a computer nor the Internet. The only way you can get the photos or audio clips out is if you save those to the SD-card, take the card out, walk to your computer, insert the SD-card in your computer and copy the files to your harddrive. Hello? This is the 21st century! There's FaceBook, Flickr, Google PICASA, ACD See and other WAY MORE EFFICIENT ways of sharing pictures and audioclips. Why the heck can't the DSi share these things online without having to fiddle with the SD-card and a computer? It makes you virtually dependable on a SD-card reader and a whole computer to do something as easy as sharing what you create on the DSi.
Oh, but don't worry, you're not missing anything. The picture editing tool is something you will grow tired of in 2 minutes and the the Audio editing Tool is so vastly crippled that you'll have more fun with the Windows Audio Recording Tool.
The DSi Audio Tool lets you record an audioclip for 10 seconds regardless of the size of the SD-card you have.
Non-sharable Nintendo accounts?
When purchasing applications and games on the Nintendo DS Shop, you're spending Nintendo Points; much like of the Nintendo Wii Shop. However the points are not interchangable.
You will have to have two seperate accounts, one for the Wii and one for the Nintendo DS.
This is essentially retarded. Both the Wii and the DS have been out for 3-4 years are there is still no connectivity between them. Why in Gods name didn't they get their brains out of their rectums and realized that the Nintendo Point system could be designed for BOTH platforms.
The alleged (but non-existant!) WPA2 support
Ah, my by far biggest gripe with the DSi.
The Nintendo DSi now supports WPA2 Wireless Connection encryption.
The old Nintendo DS machines were only able to run the ANCIENT deprecated WEP encryption.
The majority of Wi-Fi connections out there use WPA and nobody with a brain would ever use WEP at home. Finally Nintendo updated the latest DS-model with WPA, but guess what it only works for browsing and the Nintendo DS Shop. If you want to play your NDS games Multiplayer wirelessly you still have to resort to using WEP making the entire WPA-support entirely and utterly pointless What the COCK were they thinking? What is the whole point of adding WPA support to the DSi if all the games still use WEP?!
Lack of GBA slot adds more problems
Thanks to Nintendo removing the GBA-slot, I cannot any longer have Force Feedback on my Nintendo DS - yes, the NDS has Rumble Pack! An Officially Licensed and Approved by Nintendo product that was launched with Metroid Prime Pinball and is supported by multiple games.
You want to use this with your DSi? Well screw you!
Oh, and if you want to play any of the Guitar Hero games on the NDS, you are officially screwed as well since the Guitar Hero Controller goes into the GBA slot!
These obvious design flaws makes the DSi in my humble opinion stand out as nothing more than a half-assed rushed job. The DSi consists mainly of old outdated features and ideas that are poorly executed. Can a Firmware update fix these issues? I do not think so.
I will NOT be purchasing a DSi anytime soon.
On an unrelated note:
Here in Europe, the videogame industry has been known to severly screw over the consumer more than in any other part of the world. In my opinion, the DSi overpriced for what it is concidering it is inferior to the Nintendo DS Lite but not only that; here in Sweden it is impossible to find a store that trades in DS Lites for the DSi so if you want one, you better cough up 220? for it.
