Yes i did read it all, please don't treat me like i'm stupid, but based on the manner in which Lilani wrote it, the operative word in his/her statement was emulate, i was merely pointing out the fact that I suspected that Marilyn Monroe was actually blowing a kiss to the camera not emulating it.

The duck face is a new evolutionary measure. Given that our society has evolved we needed new ways to identify who is not fit for procreating. Thus if someone intentionally takes a duckface photo (whether or not doing it ironically counts is up to user discretion) then they are sending us a message not to breed with them.

It is a contraction of the word 'butty' or 'buttie' and is used as a synonym of 'mate'.

The OED lists the original specialist use of 'butty' as a mining or engineering middleman between proprietors and workmen. This term was used within coal mining communities in England and Wales.

Wright's Dictionary of English Dialects (early C20) lists it as meaning either a "fellow worker" or an "intimate friend".

It was also used in canal transport to describe a barge being towed by a lead barge. Thus the second barge was known as a 'butty'.

This could explain why in the south Wales coalfields it was initially used in the pits to mean a miner's young helper. It later evolved to mean any workmate and now it applies to any friend.

The "duckface" only works with certain types of lips and even then, it requires practice.

To go all over-analytical, my guess is that duckface happened in an attempt to imitate the "sexy" pouting look that you see on celebrity women modeling. You know that one, where the person is facing the camera and the lips are slightly parted and look large and overly made-up. Theoretically, big red lips are a sign of lust and sexiness, and the pout is probably supposed to evoke thoughts of contact with said lips, or a come-hither kind of look, or maybe even some sort of faux-innocence, but then you get duckface out of it. (This is also why we have lipstick.)
