I feel that exloration ships should be named after famous explorers, both astronauts and otherwise (and the lead ship HAS to be named the Armstrong).

Capital ships should be named after famous battles (c'mon, Stalingrad, Marathon, Gettysburg? Awesome.)

Carriers should get admirals' names (also generals, if we run out of admirals).

Finally, I think that two names from the Halo books should get in: UNSC Do You Feel Lucky? (Because Dirty Harry is awesome) and UNSC Say My Name (because it just sounds cool to me.)

For a start, I'd name it by battlegroup rather than naming each individual ship, cuts down on the necessity for creativity a little bit (though if the crew wanted to give nicknames, I wouldn't be against that). Endless Space does this, and it makes naming things much easier, I have enough time deciding what class name to give each design.

Battlegroups would be named dependent on their purpose, with historically relevant names like Enterprise and Apollo for the explorer groups, and for the more heavily armed ships we have names like Armageddon, Mars or Tyr. Within the battlegroup, ships are graded and given a secondary designation to go after the group name. The lead ship takes prime, because Armageddon-Prime sounds like an awesome place to command from. Secondaries are labelled with the greek alphabet, because commanding Mars-Omega to fire from your admiral's chair on Mars-Prime would also be awesome. Escorts and other vessels are then numbered, because it's still pretty badass even if you are only torpedo fodder.

The only forseeable problem with this is you either have to lose entire battlegroups at a time, or do a lot of re-naming.

It is overpowered as Heaven itself!

Name of ship: Blackhawke
Type of ship: Capital ship of the Lightning Archangel fleet.
Height: 25kms.
length: 250kms.
Floors: 250 floors.
Sections:
Floor 1 - Commander's penthouse.
Floor 2 - Command Center, Living area.
Floor 3 - Holographic dojo, hanger, bar, gym/stadium/nature room.
Floor 4 - Armory, machines and eng area.
Weapons: Lightning turrets, Lightning life ripper and etc.

The USS Kill Beast Buffet. And for good measure we'll paint the ships gun metal grey and outfit them with plenty of flickery-ass florescent lights.

I might go Norse for a capital ship. I just like the idea of a call going in: "All-Father, this is Alpha-1, do you copy?" And then of course we could always name ships after Medal of Honor (or the equivalent from other nations) recipients (USS Audie Murphey, anyone?)...Or we could name them after comic book superheros...Can you imagine that? "Hang tight, Batman. Green Lantern and Black Lightning are poised to intercept..."
You just took the words from my mind.

Being Swedish I'd definetly go for the Norse mythology as spaceship names.

Ragnarok is just a badass name for a big cruiser ship.

I'm going to go with "Armstrong","Galileo", and "Challenger".

Armstrong for the first man on the moon

Galileo for the father of astronomy

And Challenger in memory of the seven brave astronauts that perished in that unfortunate event. They deserve a proper tribute.

Other good names I could go for would be Apollo 21, Odyssey, Hercules, and Texas. I'm also partial to Clinton or Mandela.

"Enterprise", of course. It was the first space shuttle [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Shuttle_Enterprise] after all.

The funny thing about the Star Trek series is that even non-trekkies wouldn't blink if we named a starship "Enterprise". If we named it "Millenium Falcon" on the other hand people would roll their eyes and balk.
Well that's because "Enterprise" was a fairly famous ship name long before Star Trek came around. I mean the [a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Enterprise_%28CV-6%29"]Big E[/a] alone would be justification enough.

The Star Trek Mythos just appropriated it to keep up a semblance of temporal continuity.

OT: Well I think I got a general scheme for various roles

Exploration/Science vessels:
- Named after locations and geographical features on Earth ie Mariana, Everest, Cairo, Hong Kong etc.
- Named after mythic and mystical places ie El Dorado, Atlantis, Olympus, Valhalla (most likely reserved for flagships)

Combat/Security vessels:
- Named after famous battle locations ie Alamo, Jerusalem, Normandy, Thermopylae etc.
- Named after notable military figures ( both individual and object) ie Patton, Sun Tzu, Enterprise, Bismarck etc. (most likely reserved for flagships)

Engineering/Construction vessels:
- Names of famous landmarks and architectural marvels (excluding mundane words) ie Eiffel Tower would be just Eiffel, Great Pyramids at Giza would just being Giza, Golden Gate Bridge just being Golden Gate etc.

Diplomatic vessels:
- Named after famous historical figures ie Gandhi, Churchill, Augustus, Nebuchadnezzar etc.

Colony vessels:
- Named after words that inspire wonder and strength ie Odyssey, Endeavour, Valiant, Indomitable, Journey etc.

Figure that should cover any of the important aspects of intergalactic interaction

Go for the silly ones, for example:
Alienated Artifact, Mindless Zealot, Unfortunate Apocalypse, Daisie Massacre, Shattered Plate, Broken Wrench, Freezing Holocaust, Civil Insanity, Knitting Madman, Royal Anarchist and so on.

We could call our Diplomatic flagship to xenos worlds the "Bringer of Eternal Peace".

I really like the Greek mythology names that can be applied to ships. As is the case of the Stargate franchise with Daedalus, Prometheus, Apollo, Odyssey. So apply any god/goddess, hero, or story name is easy.

I agree with this one we could go its sounds badass we also need a firefly class ship

and a Skywalker class and an odin class
An article I was linked about an astro-mining project and the mining ships were classed 'Fireflies'. Though for some reason they spelled it 'FireFlies', with a capital second F.

Still awesome.

Zarathustra

Valiant

Icarus

Renown

Noble

anything that makes humanity look like a noble, dignified race, while still sounding like ships you don't want to fuck with or would be proud to fight beside

Icarus wouldn't be very good name then because all he did was fuck up flying and die

Daedalus would be more fitting if anything
