So I just wanna know if anybody out there agrees with me that Morrowind GOTY is far better than Oblivion...?

Anybody believe that Morrowind's the best game of all time? (I do)

Well, Oblivion has a way better combat and magic system, but thats all. Alchemy and repairing is too easy, Dungeons just refill with anonymous enemys, and the overworld has no variety at all. Just Forests, some Mountains and some kind of swamp. Argonians and Kajit look just like humans with other textures, also they speak like russian terrorists. There are only half as many guilds - if you want to roleplay a good character, Thieves Guild and the Dark Brotherhood are gone and you are left with nothing but a Mage Guild and a Fighters Guild.

The short answer is that there are lots of people on these boards that agree to the first point, and probably at least a few who agree on point two.

You might mix that up with some kind of arguments for why it's the best game of all time. The nature of the experience, why you liked it, why others would like it, what it does better than other games, and any shortcoming it has and why they're irrelevant.

Best game of all time, no, but it's story, challenge, and addiction factor are far higher than oblivion, so in short Morrowind is a significantly better game than Oblivion, though I preferred oblivion's gameplay.

Personally, I like morrowind more because it felt like a real world, and I guess more to the point it felt like an adventure. I always felt that no matter how much I played, I'd never do more than scratch the surface. And that's true. I've been tempted to re-install it for a while now.

I didn't have GOTY, but I've always wondered something.

When you start up a new character in GOTY edition, are you supposed to disable to data file for Tribunal up until you're ready to be getting attacked in your sleep? I would usually just console the bad guys away until I was at least level 5, but I wondered if a version that came with all three from go had a more elegant solution.

i own elder scrolls III GOTY, it was really good. i liked the fact that humans werent the dominating race, and that it wasnt the medieval bullshit in which you swing sword at the baddies and saving the universe from some hell-like place. well if you copy that last part and put something like: in the elder scrolls 4 you have this medieval bullshit where you swing swords at baddies and save the universe from some cheap ripoff from hell. and they did some vampire crap in there! i like the elder scrolls because it WASNT like all the samey fantasy stuff, but now theyre making it about as mainstream as can be! so go to hell with oblivion, i liked morrowind better.

yeah, the expantions are just like any mod, you can turn them on and off.

Out of the two, Morrowind feels a bit more immersive than Oblivion, however I kinda prefer Daggerfall more. Much bigger world. You can be the sourge of evil in one nation, and the savior of the damned in the next one, making it your hideout when the cops are on your back.

I always managed to kill the assassins even at lower level, using spell scrolls and everything. They drop one of the strongest sets of light armor in the whole game, thats pretty awesome.

Not usually a problem for me, the dark brotherhood assassins are leveled, so they're weaker if you're lower leveled.
Interesting... I never knew. Now then....

I don't really understand the point here. There were vampires and werewolves in Morrowind too. I agree that Oblivion was bland fantasy, but the bit about vampires I don't quite get.

I think I'll say Morrowind because I wasn't particularly fond of oblivion's Auto Enemy Difficulty scaling based on your level.

Both of them rack up in some of my favorite games of all time though.

At least they know what to and what not to do for the next game. For me I always thought that the story, atmosphere and interactivity of Morrowind mostly made up for the fact that you were as strong as a newborn kitten when you first started. The only appealing part of Oblivion is the combat system that made the game survivable. Fix that stuff and the crappy monster leveling in Oblivion and you have a definite GOTY.

i cant really recall the vampire thing, i must have missed that. the werewolf thing WAS stupid, it messed up the good part in solstheim. i thought those wolfs were just a stray pack but noooooooooooooo they just had to be werewolves. ah well, the atmosphere was still awesome and hostile, the story was clever and the world felt larger then in oblivion, because you have horses in oblivion. so im sorry for bitching about the vampire stuff. i still think morrowind is superior to oblivion

I liked Morrowind better, but Oblivion was hardly a crappy game. The story was the most epic of the games, the world was vast, and it had the fast travel feature which was a wonderful addition. That being said, the ending of Morrowind was by far more satisfying.

Oblivion gave me an amazing experience, it's so fun that I'm considering to take it up again for the second time now.

Morrowind on the other hand, now there's an ugly one. I jumped in my chair when I saw the horrible models and animations. In Q3, low-poly is charming and well done, in Morrowind it's just plain ugly. Friends have told me that the gameplay excuses the horrid visuals, but frankly I don't think gameplay, no matter how good, can make a game that makes me want to vomit worth playing.

i just HAVE to disagree, the models of oblivion are beter that obvious ITS A NEWER GAME, the gameplay is easier, but the story is somewhat predictable and the epic battle at the end failed the epic part. the story in morrowind is really nice, and i like the fact that you start out with the strenght of a "newborn kitten" yes that was a quote. in oblivion you can beat every enemy from the start as long as you have any form of strategy. and i also think the quicktravel was a horrible mistake, to quote yahtzee "to dull it down for the console tards" thats what it feels like: its no longer a giant world since you can travel to every city in a matter of seconds once you have been there even without the small payment in morrowind to ride the legged thing... i forgot the name.

Stiltstrider's the name you're looking for.

And yeah, I think the fast travel was a mistake. I remember trekking across the sand-storm beaten ashlands, hearing the distant call of a strider (at least I think that's what that noise was) as I desperately tried to get to the ashlander camps before the frickin cliff races ate me alive. Damn that was fun.

Oblivion, you open your map and click a few times.

Eh?!

Oblivion when viewed in isolation is a brilliant game, bit if you played and loved Morrowind it was severely disappointing. For me Oblivion was good, but only when it was modded to be more like Morrowind. First of all the leveling enemies, in Morrowind there is a real sense of progression, yes you are as weak as a small kitten at the start but by putting in the work you can reach the status of a god, and it is all the more rewarding for the time and effort you have put in.

Then there is the depth, Oblivion had a rather cut down class and ability selection, there was a significant amount of character customisation available, allowing you to create a unique skill and spell set, granted they weren't as polished with some skills being pretty much useless. There were many factions to explore with a huge number of missions and side quests with the result that you can return to the game after a long time and have a unique experience. Within a few weeks of playing Oblivion I felt I had seen everything there was to see, the scenery, dungeons and architecture is generic and repetitive. But years later I was still seeing unique things in Morrowind, for example the Daedra statue missions, something to which you are led by the hand in Oblivion, I had no idea they even existed until I stumbled upon one with my 3rd character, another huge set of missions with unique rewards. There were a huge variety of unique items, weapons and armor available to reward simply going out and exploring, a motivation that Oblivion sorely lacked.

The combat system was piss poor, magic was pretty useless and it ran like a dog on the pc I had when I first played it but it made up for it in sheer depth and charm.
