All I can simply say is look at Mickey Mouse and Walt Disney's creations; 1928-present and Disney cartoons still really popular. Plus, from what I gather, any level of popularity Pokemon has everywhere outside Japan is dwarfed by its popularity inside Japan; its being going strong since 1996. If Disney is anything to go by, then Pokemon may still going strong at least till 2079.

Well, I imagine my great great great grandchildren will be plying Pokemon Light sky blue. I just wonder what they are going to start naming them after completely using up the colour spectrum?
"Pokemon R=234, G=133, B=125"

i think you would run out of ideas for pokemon when you make make one after a garbage bag.

but they didn't stop there

they had to give it a evolution.
ehm some things the first gen are based of:
sewage
larger amounts of sewage
rocks
larger rocks
boulders
magnets
more magnets
mimes
eggs that turn into a palm tree
diglett (what is it) that turns into three digletts

to be honest the fifth gen is my favourite gen, and I don't think that the franchise is going to go any time soon and I am glad about that.

Well, it's pokemon, so here's what I'm thinking will happen:

Pokemon Gray
Pokemon RagingRuby and SmoothSapphire (remakes of 3rd gen)
(years pass)
Pokemon Orange and Purple
Pokemon Teal
Pokemon GlintingPearl and ShiningDiamond
(years pass)
Pokemon Lead and Metal
Pokemon Bronze
Pokemon LightBlack and DarkWhite
(years pass)
Pokemon Sky and Earth
Pokemon Sea
Pokemon CitrusOrange and TangyPurple
(years pass)
Pokemon Day and Night
Pokemon Dusk
Pokemon BrightLead and HardMetal

I could do this for hours.

Pokemon will never die. As long as children are being born and continuing to play these games, they will never stop.

Like all Nintendo franchises, they will continue to churn out games with the same story and only slight improvements to the gameplay with each iteration.

Hell, Nintendo's even able to get people to buy multiple copies of the same goddamn game with only the offer of slight differences.

As far as I can tell, this series will never end.

I think its about time for a major leap forward type revelation with it. Instead of making it backwards compatable with the earlier games, they should make a new generation, with no new pokemon, allowing it to span ALL the continents and revamp their fundamentally flawed system. It is becoming unsustainable in my opinion, but as long as people keep buying it, they'll keep making stupid looking pokemon and repackaging their game.

A few improvements I can think of off the top of my head would be:
1. Do away with HMs taking up a move slot. Like completely. HM slaves are a painful evil
2. Instead of having 100000 moves to choose from but only about 10 good ones, have movesets that upgrade as pokemon level. Every few levels you're allowed to add points into improving a moves power, accuracy or adding an effect. etc
3. Cut the crap with team rocket, galactic, magma, aqua etc. If they're evil, make their actions have some level of peril other than ooh they're mean to pokemon. Blaaah
4. Like I said before, let it span ALL the continents so you can collect ALL the pokemon and beat every regions gym challenge and maybe even a new story for every region.
5. Try try TRY to make pokemon that aren't completely ridiculous.

Just some ideas I've had, but I think they need to innovate along these lines.
I really want to see an actual attempt at a console pokemon game. The battle system is great and all, but it's just stupid in any 3-dimensional capacity. I'd be real interested in a game that featured real-time pokemon battles, where the player takes a more directive role as the trainer instead of deliberately controlling the pokemon's actions in combat. There's also a large sticking point with pokemon's constant message because, while every freaking npc in the damn game touts how important your bond is with your pokemon, the mechanics of the game itself urge the player to see these things as little more than tools (discounting the "follow" feature from heartgold and soulsilver), and while this isn't something easily addressed in the limited space of the handheld games, it could easily make for a compelling experience on a console to be able to interact with pokemon in a semi-meaningful manner.

If you can't tell, I've been waiting for a (real) console version of Pokemon since the days of the N64.
This games main demographic is kids... 'nuf said

Pokemon has run out of ideas.
Probospass, Icecreamon, Hexagonmon and Swoobat, Trubbish, Sigiliph and that sarcophagus thing just show that they are nearly out of ideas.

The key difference to me was that none of the original Pokemon were just things you could find laying around your house, like a trash bag, or an ice cream cone. They were either rooted in nature, mythology, or exotic enough to be 'based on' whatever it was, rather than just 'this is an ice cream' or 'this is a trash bag.'

...Also, the OP mentioned no advances in the battle system. This isn't entirely true, the last generation split all moves into physical and special individually instead of by type and that was kind of a big deal.

1. what's wrong with HM slaves?
2.that takes away the strategy any move can be good if used properly
3.in pokemon white and black team plasma was basically that world's PeTA only slightly less evil and team magma and aqua were environmental extremists and team galactics leader was going to DESTROY THE UNIVERSE so he could make a world without spirit and control all life
4. good idea but they can't just do it that easily
5. what pokemon are NOT completly ridiculous

There an awful lot of CHILDREN who play the game. And the biggest reason the game franchise wont die is because its a Japanese product. That the japanese love! I mean their tastes of games...and basicly everything else are totally different from ours! (youtube couple of Jap commercials ive no idea wtf is going on there).

But they love the series and keep buying it and thus the pocket monsters will keep bouncing around the forest.

I think an Elder-scrolls style RPG about pokemon would possibly be the best game ever. Just walking around the landscape and seeing an angry Pidgey flying towards you would be pretty epic.

I imagine Pokemon will finally die when everyone simply stops buying it. Likely on account of everyone in the world being dead, or living in a new stone age due to various circumstances.

Someone in the first page had a good idea about combing Ash from the Evil Dead franchise with Pokemon... Yes it was a joke, but I say that would be the most awesome game ever. Maybe he would be a legendary pokemon, or possibly the player character... either way... Ash used chainsaw! Its super effective!

What? Kinda like sludge coming to life? Grimer is basically Trubbish's equivalent. Two-staged pure poison-type. Both are fairly ridiculous concepts.
Remember. The new region is based on the Manhattan Metropolitan Area. Sentient garbage makes sense when you're so close to Jersey.
a few things 1 is unova based after New York 2 i am aussie 3 what i mean is that they are running out of idears for pokemon
Uh. Wow.
One: I said that. I guess it's define as the "New York" metropolitan area, but I hear both thrown around. Guess someplace in Kansas is also called Manhattan, fancy that. Either way, Kansas is no where close to Jersey. Kind of obvious what I meant.
Two: That's nice?
Three: Just because you don't like them doesn't mean that they are running out of ideas. The only reason why people say that they were running out of ideas when they made things like Mr. Mime is because it was the first batch. He's just as ridiculous or even more so than the newer Pokemon that people love to throw around as examples for Game Freak's apparent lack of imagination.
Mr. Mime is horrible. I recently downloaded pokemon online, and made a bunch of guys. I started at the top of the list and every time I got to someone I liked I chose his abilities, EVs, etc and put him in a box. When I finished it turned out 50% are from first gen, 25% from second gen, 20% from third gen, 5% from fifth gen. They really do seem to be running out of ideas, or at least good ideas.
Or maybe you just prefer older Pokemon to the newer ones?
A lot of the newer Pokemon have more imagination behind them has they're based on more obscure things, like folklore as opposed to animals. It's not so much as they're running out of ideas but rather expanded what Pokemon could be, and that makes people uncomfortable because they think Pokemon should just be things they already know, but with fire instead of hair, etc. (ultra creative)

Perhaps people should stop throwing around such ridiculous notions and just say that they flat out don't like them.
I like the majority of fifth generation Pokemon. Fourth gen in comparison, not so much. Definitely my least liked generation in designs, but this generation is better (my favorite so far, actually). Both the two most recent, but vastly different outlook on both. Did they run out of ideas and then suddenly get ideas again? No.
Nothing wrong with like plain Pokemon, but I'm willing to bet that most people have warmed up to what they grew up with when they were a kid rather than giving new ones a chance due to the different looking style. (much more crisp and color on the new art, where the old ones look pale and crude in comparison)

thank you that's what I keep saying

this is sewage not something that is rooted in nature or mythology

this is magnets not rooted in nature or mythology also you can find them lying around in your house

this is a pokeball not rooted in nature or mythology

also even for two mediocre pokemon the fifth gen has tones of good pokemon.

Nintendo never lets anything die. See Mario or such, which is sad. They will milk a series to death before they even think of making something new and original. All that seems to matter is money.

One of these days it'll just need to be put down, as with all milked franchises in the world. When that day comes, no one knows. I can only hope it comes soon and it's put down with respect and laid down softly. Then we can move on and make newer things, but make sure not to forget what paved our way forward.
