The End of Sony?

With what we know now I think they will pull through this mess. These law suits are gonna put a dent in Sony but nothing big enough to kill it. Right now the playstation is just recovering from a bad accident. It's in a coma now but the doctors say it will wake up in a week or so and should make a full recovery. It just might have a few reputation scars to deal with.

They'll recover, at least partially. Whether or not they can ever achieve the success they have previously enjoyed is considerably less certain. I know I certainly won't ever trust them again, not with their reckless disregard for consumers private information and their flat out assault on consumer rights.

While a major PR fail and who knows whats going to happen as a result from all of this, Sony will pull through and I will be happy to see them do so. They walk away with a very valuable lesson learned from all this and one all other companies can also look to now. Overall I think this is actually a really positive event...well not for the people whose information got stolen, but hey you can hop on that lawsuit wagon.

No, if there is a new contestant in the console race, my money is on a company who hasn't made a console before.

If Sony do get out of the game, they'd sell off their console related divisions, so anyone looking to get into the game would be well served buying them up. Nothing wrong with the PS3 itself and 'Playstation' still has a lot of brand recognition, it just seems to be that the supporting infrastructure has big problems.

They'll be ok in the end. Yeah this whole situation sucks for them (and PS3 owners overall) but I highly doubt they'll leave the console race. And I know some people are saying that if they do leave the race someone else will just take their place and here's my opinion on what I've heard some people saying.

Sega: If they did get back into the race I wouldn't mind and would actually be a little pleased, but given how they've been for the past decade I highly doubt they would go back to making their own consoles now.

Atari: Come guys, people stopped caring about Atari consoles after the 2600, do you really think they of all people will try to enter the console race again?

Also apples console would melt faces (literally... all apple products over heat like nothing) and it would cost about 4 grand... and not play very many games... thus defeating the purpose of it being a console...

It's not totally impossible that Sony will shut down SCE particularly if this class-action suit goes through. They might just cut their losses and get out of gaming, but the company itself won't fall solely as a result of this debacle.

OT: No this is not the end of Sony or the playstation it is merely a bump in the road and will skew public opinion for awhile. Just wait until Microsoft release another shoddily made console(60%+ failure rate even though I own one is disgraceful) or Nintendo goes for the casual crowd.
