Yes there is, in America it's called 'Murder in the first degree.'
You offend me, sir! The contracts my firm provides clearly state we are dealing with "pest control". And I swear we're trying to make the world a better place for everyone. And I swear my intentions are good. Surely this means I'm not breaking any laws?
You seem to misunderstand how the law works. There is nothing that states Sony is responsible for any possible intrusions. The only way they can be held accountable for the hack is if you can prove negligence on their part.

They're required to try and prevent intrusions. Not guarantee they will never happen.
True. The point is that what they're required to do is specific, and gives us a guarantee that losing the info isn't necessarily a huge problem. Or at least possible to control afterwards.

Sony has been unable to actually find out after nearly two weeks what the extent of the problem is.. I'm not usually extremely positive, I'll admit that. But this is not a good sign. Anyone, even the smallest online store would have been able to figure out what they had lost, and what cards and info would be affected just about right away - why doesn't Sony even know? "Potentially lost everything" isn't ..helpful, to put it like that.

This will put a big dent in Sony Playstation operations but no, it is not the end of Sony as a company or their game dev branch. It's one of the biggest international companies in the world; a company like that does not simply disappear over night. Also, Wal-Mart gets class action lawsuits on regular basis every year and you don't see them going belly up anytime soon.

Y'know, if this had happenned to Microsoft or Apple, people wouldn't have conversations or even thoughts like this. They would either just grumble amongst themselves while they wait for something new to buy from said companies or they'd be sending get well cards and flowers in droves.

The recent situation with Sony is a big deal but honestly I think its being hyped up because of all the attention the industry has been getting over the past year. Examples: Supreme Court case, the axed Battle of Fallujah game, Fox News talking about games too much, EA being, well...EA; and idiotic statements/sissy arguments from game company representatives(those guys are starting to sound as bad as politicians).

I highly doubt this kill the entire company. Sony is very huge with it's finger in many pies. Although this could possibly be enough to kill their video game development, but I doubt it.
Sony is like the Hydra, cut off one head and two more grow in it's place. A lot of multinational corporations are like that come to think of it.
Exactly this. If the same happened to Nintendo there'd be a much higher risk of them going out of business since games are their only industry, but Sony and Microsoft both have tons of other sectors to back them up.

..What? What happened? I don't get it? Either you're exaggerating the hell out of something (possible) or something huge happened since last time I checked IGN (also possible)

Please fill me in
i just mean with the class action suit, the CC number's being sold and basically the whole cluster-fuck this hacking has turned into. I'm sure the Company as a whole will survive, I just wonder if Playstation will.
It will, but this is definetly a setback. I think anyone that owns a PS3 (myself included) will start demanding guarantied security.
I think they'l recover. But I wonder what precautions sony will present from the scenario, and what, if any, ammends they will present to their users.

I'm sick of people whining over this. You can't say the class action suit against them will ruin them or the credit card numbers being sold because not only is it totally unproven that the hackers got through their encryption for all we know Sony could be able to prove legally that they took every precaution to secure their data. It's not a case of if they get hacked they've broken a law, everyone is vulnerable to hacking, it only matters if they can prove they did everything they could. Can we please let this drop unless we can discuss it rationally?

No such thing.

Its unlikely that suit will get much of anything accomplished, (THANK GOD) Sony will be fine. They'll have a bad quarter then be back on the band wagon by summer. You're over exagerating. If by some odd chance they did die, I would probably stop being a gamer because I refuse to sell my soul to Microsoft, and... wait a tick, I suppose I might jump over to the PC. maybe, I'd need a shit ton of money, but that would be the best outcome.

So, with this whole mess coming to light over the last little bit, how does everyone think Sony will, if at all, recover from this? are we looking at the end of Sony, or, at least the Playstation aspect of it?

And if this is the end of Playstation, what do you all think is in the future for console gaming and production?
Sony still have their fancy electronics. I should know with my Sony 40 inch HDD TV right across me.

Sony can recover, but the PS3 and the PSN? It's just reasonable to give up on them right now. They have been hit so fucking hard.

Scrap it. The PS3 is dead, and PSN have proven to be the worst service up to date.
(I'm saying this because when you are responsible for 70 million accounts, you just don't fuck up. Especially not all of it.)

i mean c'mon, Toyota is still flying high after that fiasco with the accelerator and brake pedals, and IIRC people actually died from that

The class-action lawsuit won't get anywhere.

Um, last time I checked Sony didn't rely on PS3 sales exclusively. They make a lot of products.

No, this isn't the end of Sony or the Playstation brand. If Microsoft was able to keep the xbox 360 going strong even after all the bullshit that happened with the red ring of death (2 of my consoles died because of it), Sony can get through this.
Everyone seems to have forgotten the cluster fuck that was the first generation of 360's.
Actually their other markets collapsed. They rely on the PS3 now. However even that market is drying up fast. I predict around 1-2 generations left.
Err... are you sure about that?
Yes. the profits from the console are basically the lion share of their profits. However, the console market is drying up. Sony's console wont last very long.
aaaand where are the facts, figures, and scources to substansiate this claim?

No, in fact people are flaming at the wrong guy, this is like a bank heist. Everyone is getting mad at the bank with the giant steel vault instead of the people who, y'know, actually robbed them. Sony is too big a player in the videogame, entertainment, and hardware industry just to fall to some hackers, in fact... waitaminute, this only happend after GeoHot posted the Playstation 3 source code on the web. The Playstation hardware&software was practically impenetrable. THATS WHY SONY HAD THE LAWSUIT, to ensure this wouldn't happen! Okay, get this: Sony designed an encrypted source code for the PS3 that was incapable of being of solved and hacked. It's outerwall was so powerful that there was no need to protect the city within, so to say. Sony must have guessed, but couldn't say, that if the code was out in the world that hackers could have access to both the PS3's software and PSN itself! They couldn't tell GeoHotz that in public so they settled privately out of court and told GeoHotz what would happen now that the code was out. The code was removed but people managed to get their hands on it before it was lost forever. GeoHotz may he to blame for this, I'm not saying I hat him for what he did, but an entire global network of supercomputers went down and all our private info was stolen. Sony wasn't suing GeoHotz out of outrage or copyright, it was suing out of defense and hoping to stop this before it could happen! It makes perfect sense! Nobody could have seen this coming not GeoHotz, not Sony, and definitely not us. I guess Sony wasn't being an evil corporation afterall, it was doing something that seemed wrong for the greater good. Playstation is going nowhere, Sony is in somekind of earthbending horse stance forever, and GeoHotz maybe coming on this revelation.

We all know the PC is the best. ever. No console can match the computer.
I beg to differ
