What is your favorite ending - specific or style based?
The big reveal, all loose ends wrapped up, sudden and unexpected?
least favorite?
How do you like Video Games to end versus other mediums or is there a difference?

I thought A Serious Man had a great ending, Battle Star Galactica's ending pissed me off, and I'm trying to be hopeful for LOST.

uber-climactic death brawl of death. Then the survivors rebuild from the ashes.

One that supplies closure, yet still makes you feel something for a while.

Ever read the ending to "Terry and the Pirates"? (It's pretty old so you most likely have not)

Saddest. Comic. Ending. Ever.

I still feel sad thinking about it.

let me think...

I enjoy Halo 3's ending. Master Chief departs the same way he was introduced, in cryostasis slumber(sp?).

Least favorite has to be Half Life ep. 2 because it made me very very sad.

Hmmm, in videogames it is required that the final thing should pretty much be a mahoosive boss battle, and this can be done wrong (Arkham Asylum) or basically not tried (Fable 2). I personally like the final half of anything to be building up to something, before a penultimate scene where it's revealed and a final scene were the heroes are rebuilding it (or shown to be dead).

ending by bass solo.

Hell, I'll watch a movie till the end of the credits if they dubbed a bass over it.

Your basic grand finale. BIG EXPLOSION, everybody celebrates, music and dancing ensues.
See: Return of the Jedi.

Yeh the ending of fight club basically blows your face off.

On a less serious note the ending to A Clockwork Orange is pretty good.

After a cool yet easy boss fight, I'd like an epic (and pause-able, save-able) half hour to an hour cutscene of awesome battles between heroes, legions of terror, and innocent civilians. Buildings falling to pieces, heads exploding, just, epic stuff.

I like endings along the lines of The Dark Knight or The Empire Strikes Back. Ones that leave you with a, "so....what the hells gonna happen now then?" feeling, then you get the agonising wait for the conclusion. Such as waiting for The Return Of The King, so much waiting.

I like an ending that explains everything, thats makes your brain click when you see it.

I also like an ending that includes the climax. Just makes it epic. Although it shouldnt end in a cliff hanger.

The movie of Stephen King's "The Mist". Best Ending Ever.

Here it is in sound.

....Bang!.. Bang!Bang!.. Bang!
Car door opening, car door closing.
Man shouts various deranged things.
Silence...
Rumble, Rumble- metallic squeaking....
Louder rumblesqueaks.
Man goes,"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!"
The End.

This is a must see movie.

Best ending is when its not a stereotypical "happy ending"... you know: defeat the evil, the masses celebrate blahblah. An ending needs to have impact; show the character developement. It has to draw paralells about who the characters were, and now are. What they really have done and why... also lots of explosions help too.

Best ending ever would be Cowboy Bebop (the anime) Damn i cried manly tears the last 3 sessions. You learned about the heroes and their (mis)adventures over the course of the series, but in the end it all got resolved with their past and what it means to let go (or not) or realizing that the past is gone forever.

"Bang" indeed.

Gamewise i rather liked the ending of "Legacy of Kain: Defiance" - pretty much the same: awesome story told over multiple games. People made choices.. played a game, and in the end: pure manly willpower, determination... and kicking the ass of fate itself (and a horrible cthulhu-class monster-god)

The ending of Life of Pi was very good. It left the reader with a choice, in a way...

Both good endings in my book.

I also love a good Hamlet style ending or Ran (never actually read King Lear so I don't know if it was the same).
The Deer Hunter, Apocalypse Now, Aguerre Wraith of God

Cliffhangers like Empire Strikes back work for me, I think even more in video games. The Master Chief scenario reminds me of all the man with no name samaraii/cowboy movies wandering back off - which I'm generally good with if not particularly impressed with.

@Furburt:please interpret the question to any genre you feel like.
