Well back when I first played Gears of War, it was the Berserker. Say what you will about the games, that big ol' fucker was freaking terrifying. His high pitched roaring as he charged straight towards you really fast, you can't kill him by conventional means, AND, he can pretty much one-shot you.

I'm honestly surprised no one has ever talked about him. :/

You know you're fucked if he's THIS close to you.

Also, the Red Dragons from Final Fantasy IX. IF you didn't have wind resistant equipment prior to fighting those guys, prepare to have three quarters of your party taken down every time they use Twister. Fuck those guys.

Those Shadow cats in the first Devil May Cry. They were an absolute nightmare. Speaking of which: Nightmare. I can handle the shoop laser, I can handle the dozens of tiny lasers and the floor goo, but fuck that spinning metal claw thing.

Having just played through Dead Space 1 and 2 within the last week, Ive got to say the the Hunter from Dead Space 1, and the Ubermorph from Dead Space 2. Not because they are difficult to kill, actually they are quite fragile and vulnerable to have their precious limbs taken off. The reason why I hate them is just because the WONT DIE. Both creatures are invincible, at least up until a scripted event where they can be killed; or otherwise incapacitated. Otherwise, you can take their legs off as many times as you want, but all it will do is slow it down. It will regenerate, and It will get you.
When does the ubermorph die? I eventually just ran to the final boss because I had to save ammo for it. I would have started over if I could, but I don't think I could have. I seriously only had plasma cutter ammo by that point.

Oh you haven't met the Capra demon yet, have you?

You'll see... You'll see.
Meh, that bossfight is just not too well-designed, along with the Tauros Demon one - you fight them both in incredibly cramped arenas. Also, Capra Demons appear as regular, rank and file respawning enemies later in the game. The might be a little nerfed (they certainly have less health), but chances are when you reach the location where they are and kill a couple of them you'd think "I used to be afraid of THESE THINGS? Meh."

OT: I thought about mentioning one of the bosses or especially tough enemies from Dark Souls, but then I realised that I didn't really dread any of them. Sure, I was cautious at first, slowly creeping around corners with my shield raised and slowly pulling enemies one by one. But now I have full understanding of the game's mechanics, and I can no longer really be afraid of the things it throws at me.

The black knights were scary and looked pretty grimdark, but once you've become familiar with their moveset they can be killed easily.

The sewer dragon boss that looks like nightmares I had after my first sexual experience was infuriating, not scary. I really don't want to look like one of those "Dark Souls is easy" people (although I must admit that the game's difficulty curve is kinda all over the place), but no enemy in that game made me feel anything except frustration.

The enemies I was really afraid of are definetly those monsters from Amnedia: the Dark Descent. It's kinda obvious - it's a horror game, it's a good horror game, it has monsters, ergo those monsters must be pretty scary. In fact, I've never even seen any of them, because the game punishes you for looking at them. But these were the only videogame monsters that made me feel genuine fear, rather than think "Oh sweet, more cannon fodder!" or "Bloody hell, I'm sick of these things, can I please NOT fight anything for a while?"

I know 'insert any enemy from Dark Souls' is going to be a fairly popular choice in this thread, but fuck, I have to agree with the guy who linked the picture of the frog demon. Which I am not linking because that means I have to look at it.

The curse status effect in Dark Souls is easily the most fucking unpleasant, frustrating, and downright terrifying status effect I've encountered in the game and those creepy little fucks just bounce around shitting out curse gas. Also they look horrible.

There is a room with a wall mounted fan, you can shove him into it.

I'm not sure wheather you were meant to do it that way.

Tonberry's from the Final Fantasy series. God how I dreaded encountering them, as I always had trouble running away from them and they'd always get very close to my party before I could flee. Sometimes they'd even kill 1 or 2 party members before I could get away.

Banshees in ME3. Got did I fear them getting close to me. Tips are given, saying that you should shoot them to prevent them from teleporting around. That never worked for me, so they always get really damn close. Which makes me panic as I don't want to get insta gibbed.

Ichthyosaur from Half Life. God did I start getting paranoid of any body of water I had to enter after one encounter with this thing...

unexpected malboro attacks in ANY final fantasy game. I swear I die to those things more than anything else in the games. Confusion + berserk + poison = Death if you don't prepare yourself.

Okay, I'm new to Dark souls. I'm in the Darkroot garden playing as a tanky motherfucking Knight. No enemy has one hit killed me EVER. I walk up to a tower and there he is, standing JUST INSIDE the doorway to the right, Havel the Rock. I'm like "Pfft, stone ass dude with a hammer, no problem". He prepares a swing, I put up my shield and BAM! He one hit kills me THROUGH MY BLOCK!

See that thing on the right? That's his shield! IT'S AS BIG AS HE IS!
Pfff, Havel. You will start fearing everything in Anor Londo if you sit there and block all the time. For Havel, I recommend that you keep moving and rely on dodging his attacks. You can attack him after he swings down his club. Take your time. He'll go down without that much of trouble if you do.

What will give you frustration isn't this guy, I can tell you that. That award belongs to the Capra Demon. That thing will ruin your shit. And yeah, the Capra Demon jumps like a freaking grasshopper. Enjoy that boss battle.

...

Okay, I'll help. Run up the stairs as soon as you cross the fog gate, heal, and then kill the doggies. Then focus your attention on the Capra Demon. He should be easy without the dogs.

OT- I could just say anything from Anor Londo and be done with it, but the award for most dreaded enemy has to be the Mimics. I always think I'm so safe, but noooo~, a Mimic just has to eat me...

Gracious and Glorious from Bayonetta.
Thats Grace and Glory. Couldn't find a picture of Gracious adn Glorious, but they look just like that, only more pimpin. Quickest and deadliest angels in the entire damned game and the cause of so much RAGE for me.

Berzerkers are female locusts. Thats right, every night a "lucky" drone gets to rail one of those things!

In terms of regular (not boss) enemies these are the first ones that pop to mind for me:

Goddamn birds in the side scroller ninja gaiden.
Red Chocobos from FF:Tactics
Hammer Brothers from Super Mario Bros.
And the hands that drop from the ceiling in the Zelda games.

The Chozo Ghosts in Metroid Prime always made me take the shortest route out of that particular room, it wasn't so much their appearance as it was the atmospheric change and the sounds. Not as scary now as they were then, but yah know...

And of course, those fucking spiders in Dark Messiah, I mean, fuuuuuck ><;

EDIT: Havel is ridiculously slow. Just circle him.

I killed Capra demon no problem, Before seeing your post btw "yay I did it on my own :D". I just used the falling attack and some firey moss shit :3

atleast you can take a couple hits from the Capra demon but with Havel it's ONE hit and you are dead. I'm playing the slow tanky guy so dodging his attacks is difficult.

Sea Snakes from Majora's Mask not because they're really difficult but because they're fucking terrifying.Same way with Set in Digital Devil Saga(not that I stayed around to find out how bad he really is).

As for difficult enemies: The eagles from Ninja Gaiden(NES) for having impeccable(read annoying)timing, Ryu lizards and Aura lions from Dream Drop Distance for just how easy they can wail on you, and Imperial Soldiers(and their variations) from Tales of Vesperia. That last one is not because they are difficult but because the Enduring Shrine of Zaude is ousy with them and it gets really boring having to fight the same respawning formations. They're are others but I'm having trouble resembling them all.

Worst for me is a combination between 3 bots on War for Cybertron and Fall of Cybertron.

Seriously these 3 are a major pain in the ass once they target you and lay into you.

(first two are the same bot but first version is scout mode and the other armoured for kill mode)

If I see a thresher I just weep a little. They're so goddamn annoying.

The Caustic Caverns is Hell in video game form.

Also Badass Psychos. They're even worse on True Vault Hunter Mode.

Unlike the pussified versions in the new game the originals were absolutely terrifying enemies, especially your first time.
Thanks, now im going to have nightmares tonight. Hate those, especially when they turn others into them. The only alien that can turn a perfect fought message into a nightmare of death and ruin as soon as they appear.

Those chicken necromorphs in Dead Space 2! I'm almost done with a Zealot run and fuck, those things are annoying!
Also those cyber psychic monkeys in System Shock 2.
