Shouldn't everyone learn this when they are in primary school?

I might keep this thread and send it to people who don't understand

Actually a quick question, can you tell me the difference between affect and effect, I've never understood it
If you stab someone and play games sometimes, then games have obviously affected you.

If the Media reports it, which they blatantly will, then the headline will be GAMING HAS A MADDENING EFFECT ON YOUR CHILDREN! ZOMG!
I'm sorry but, wut? I have a feeling you may have posted this in the wrong topic. This is about grammar, the video game obscenity thread is two blocks over
Actually, I was answering your question about affect and effect in a satirical manner.
Ohhhhhh, sorry. I'm very ill and stupid at the moment, after re reading through it actually made me chuckle

'It's' is only used to show the words 'it is' - nothing else.

Example:-

Halo troll that keeps coming up:

Halo should go shoot a plasma rifle at its chest.

Everyone else who hates this guy:

It's not a bad game. You are just an annoying troll.
So its is basically "possession form", or whatever it's called ^^

Okay, so you made a thread to post to your rage about people not using proper grammar ON THE INTERNET because you're a grammar Nazi. I'm sorry but some of us honestly have learning deficiencies and are not going to spend three times as long working on a post so some anonymous dude can fell better when reading it. It's the internet, it's full of retards. Let it go.[/urge to call someone an asshole]

it's = it is.
its = a possessive.. I think. Here's an example that should make sense.

correct: "Beer, I do not like its taste." 'its' refers to beer. you could just replace the word with 'beers', but it'd sound clunky.
incorrect."Beer, I do not like it's taste." Because it means:
"Beer, I do not like it is taste." and sense this sentence, does not make.

In other words, "it" is a word that can replace something that was referred to earlier, and it works just the same way any substantive would. The difference in "its" and "it's" is the same as the difference between "Johnnys" and "Johnny's".

Goddamn ninja'd! For once I tried to be helpful. /wrist.

Well done. You've offically proved yourself to be one of the many Escapist elitists.

Seriously, whoo, you got over 100 post count! Yay! That doesn't mean you get to berrate other members and be a general dick. I advise everyone to go and take a look at the "Hitchhikers Guide to the Escapist" on the front page, and follow the OP's suit.

I just corrected someone's paper in a bio-ethics class that violated the "there versus their" rule no less than thirty times. My teacher told us not to correct for grammar but I just became overwhelmed and covered the paper in angry marks.

it's the internet, not spelling class give us a break...in a world were probably over 80% of kids/younger adults are constantly texting their brains out...we live in a world of bad grammar and apostrophes for everything... you should know this by now...
(ps: i just want to say i'm one of the kids that don't text, cause i dont even own a cell phone)
Just the internet?! It is never just the internet. The internet is the single greatest communications device we as humans have ever invented! I seriously do not understand this argument.

OK, you've effectively pointed out you are the grammar gestapo. Nice job.
No, he has effectively pointed out he has a fully functional brain.

If they couldn't understand this in school, why would they understand it now?
Because this is the internet and everything written on the internet must be true.

Not so. The dictionary definition of elitism:

"elitism - (noun) 1 the belief in the need for a powerful social elite. 2 the belief in the natural social superiority of some people. 3 awareness of, or pride in, belonging to an elite group in society."

If I wished for a social elite then I would keep the secrets of correct grammar to myself. Likewise, if I believed in my own superiority, I wouldn't share my knowledge. In fact, if everyone starts using the English language correctly then we can banish the notion of elitism entirely. It's syntactical socialism at work!

I honestly don't see why it is necessary for you to make this point. I mean it's great that you can spell and that you have a fine understanding of the English language, but one thing you have failed to take into account is that not everyone here speaks English as their fist language. Therefor It can be quite insulting to read a thread like this one. Especially when it is written in such a condescending manner. (I realize that I'm no better then you for pointing this out)

Actually you are doing th elitist thing more then the OP was. Seeing as you are making a point of well, pointing out the OPs lower post count. Kinda makes one think you are judging the worth of the OPs information solely on his post count. Funny that when the OP has gotten the regular badge, so they might not post as much as you, but they sure have been here a while. I also didn't really see the berating you mentioned, at last from the OP. I thought the OP was just trying to give out a bit of information.

Why? Think about it, as a person who might have a conversational level of English wouldn't you like to have the opportunity to learn more about the language from a native speaker? Wouldn't you like to know common errors and hangups people run into? I can see someone being insulting about it as one thing, but simply presenting information is on a whole other level.

The amazing thing is that I was just having an argument about this a few hours ago. I said that the person maintained the flawless ability to misspell "your" 3 times in one sentence. I told him that it was "you're" and he accused me of faggotry for actually using correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation on the internet.

Sorry if I come across as condescending. I was intending to make the point in a breezy, humorous way. Anyway, the comment is primarily aimed at native English speakers. 'Cause that's the strange thing: one is never actually taught one's own language - not in a scientific way. One mimics it; absorbs it without being conscious of what one is learning.

On a broader note, I truly believe that correct use of language underpins a civilised society. It's the main thread that binds us.
