To be frank, Pimppeter2's probation for his post on page one is complete and utter bullshit.

No offense and all that, but grow up.
Mentioning on a Forum that you're thinking of quitting it is membership suicide, every forum I've been on blanket ban people saying "I'm gonna quit" to let them cool off.

Having a member state their quitting isn't sponsor friendly, and the point of the subscription is to allow members to get away from that.

I find it sad that Pimppeter2 was put on probation for a post that I frankly found extremely mature, insightful, lucid, thoughtful, meaningful, and magnificently worded (which is what I thought all posts are supposed to be).
He was put on probation for copy/pasting that same post as a reply into multiple different threads, not for the content. While the post content may be fine, the act of posting it in a bunch of different threads is just being antagonistic.

Ohh, well I'm sorry that you guys found it antagonistic, I was just tired of reiterating the same thing while adressing people. And that one seemed carefully worded enough that I wouldn't offended you guys. Not that I'm complaining, I see how it could have come off that way. My apologies

I guess people have got to understand that the order of the Escapist site's priorities is;
1. Making a profit
2. Nice?

The site can't and won't try to appeal to everybody. It has to make ends meet.

I think the man factor accounting toward people's reaction to pimpeter2's probation is that he is a major poster and is well recognized amongst the users. If I were to post something like what he posted and get put on probation no one would care.

Honestly, ignoring the repeat threads and the flame wars the Escapist is still a fun place to come and have discussions without worrying about getting lambasted or spammed by people who disagree with you. Yes post counts show that you have been here for a while and have a knowledge of the sight but the new titles don't change who you've been.

I can understand where you guys are coming from thinking that the People who join The pub club are being elitist but we aren't, we just did it support the Escapist. Yes, there are a few who joined straight out of the gate because they wanted to be different, but the majority of users there are people who have been here for at least a year and just wanted to give back to the Escapist for providing a healthy location to discuss anything we choose or enjoy a good forum game.

The Escapist has grown over the two years that I have been perusing its forums and has change greatly but that does not mean it was a bad change. The larger community is more receptive to new users than it once was and the people who have been around forever are helping the newbies get by and learn. I don't regret my decision to support them and I respect the lack of flaming that has been in this thread.

Ok, I was going to get upset about all of the stuff being said here. I was going to get worked up about Pimps statement, and the overall cynicism. Then I took a walk around my house, pet the cats and realized I don't care.

When I think about the fun I enjoy here vs. the things that annoy me like the repeat threads, the large population, the single personality that is slightly varied among posters(gets annoying when making threads), and others I find x(fun)is greater than y(the negatives). So that beings said I am a member of the Publishers Club and I still enjoy this site.

Then again all I seem to be doing lately is play forum games, post in user groups, make weekly threads, and post in threads that interest me, good system no?

After reading Spartan Banana's goodbye to everyone, it reminded me of how little I really know about these forums. I have been a loyal Escapist member since around page 2 of Zero Punctuation. I've always enjoyed reading the threads that other people wrote and replied to, though i rarely commented on them. I never really got to recognize anyone in particular either, except for MaxtheReaper.
And now that there are all of these quizzical and questionable things on the site, like Game Dogs and premium membership content, things seem like they are taking a turn for the worse. While this website has been the reason for my personal discovery of brilliant people such as Shamus, Yahtzee, and the LRR crew; I think it's losing some of its charm.
I fear for lovers of the Escapist as a community. Thoughts on the website's evolution?
The forums may be taking a turn for the worse, but the articles are still rock solid, they will keep me coming back

Why is everyone saying that all posters have the same copy paste personality? I think that's completely false

Oh, for God sake.

When did everyone turn into such drama queens?

If you don't think the existing topics are worthy of intelligent discussion, make some that are.

The site is as fun now as it ever was.

And please... enough with the Max the Reaper nostalgia.

That user spent 90% of his time here making other people feel like shit and belittling anyone with a different view to him on anything. Good riddance.

In response to PimpPeter:

I'll miss you, man. You're one of my favorite members of the site, and it's sad to see you leave :(.

And honestly, half of my posts are shitty as hell and it's pretty embarrassing reflecting on them in comparison to other much better contributors to the site. There are a few people that just about every time I post I get angry (one already posted on the first page -.-), but there are others that kinda make my day sometimes.

So with that I say it really hasn't changed much to me :p I think paying money for a forum is kinda, well, stupid, and a bit unnecessary. But whatever, atleast it isn't mandatory.

I all fairness, you're exactly like the rest of us "carbon copies". The only difference is, you have a high post count. So stop acting like you're some sort of God amongst men.
You're not. You are just like the rest of us.
Sorry.
Can you please tell me where you got that interpretation from that post?

I just said that I feel like I've lost connection with those around the Escapist. That the community has moved on without me.

The carbon copies replies to the fact that I simply don't know any of you guys. So you're all the same to me.
I am sorry to hear how you feel but understand where you are coming from.

I kind of understand your point though. I joined this site last summer, during that time there were a few users who really stood out and were interesting. They were the kind of users who put some real personality into their posts.

Now people just tend to be nice, which is okay in its own way, but easy to forget

I guess we all have to try a little harder to keep the spirit of the community up.

Seriously though, what triggered this in parituclar?

Meh, I'm not leaving for good. But I am withdrawing. Or more like making better/funnier posts. But thanks

Thanks for understanding. I guess its more of a couple of things put together rather than just this one event. I guess I was just venting for a lot of things that were bugging me.

I guess this is sort of directed at me. Like I said in my post "at the risk of sounding like a melodramatic *****"... I'm not all that intense on what I posted, its just airing some problems. I guess this is just one of those times that people have taken the internet as, to use the meme, serious business.

As far as Max goes, you'll notice I actually didn't mention anything good about him in my post. But he was at least, for lack of better words, unique.

Nah, it wasn't aimed at you, Pimp. Just a general observation on a couple of recurring themes I've seen here recently.

I got on fine with Max but very often I saw him being utterly horrible to other members for no good reason, so for me it was no surprise when he was banned!

What? He only insulted people who deserved it!
He was at the very least slightly nicer than some members here (naming names causes the violence, so I'm silent here). The difference is big. Max's attitude for one never bothered so much as these ones.

Max's definition of someone 'deserving it' was very different from mine.

You may not have seen it but I saw it many times, he'd attack people for no reason other than they had an opinion he didn't agree with.

I've not really been noticing much change here.
that's probably because I pretty much stopped using the forums after I got suspended, even when several more than reputable posters here backed me up.

the problem I have with moderation of any forum is that when you have multiple moderators, mistakes always happen, some mods don't know about certain rules, some do, Example, on Bungie.net (mods are usually drunk there anyway, but that's not the point) I made a "one word response thread", it wasn't "Spam this thread with whatever" it was actually pretty funny stretch of humour and imagination, however, it was still against the rules, thus, I received a short ban.

yet came back to see several threads that had "ripped off" of my previous thread last night, and said exactly what my thread had said, yet they were never punished, just because the "mods" didn't feel up to it.

(and if you're wondering, I was suspended here for calling some girl an "attention whore" after she posted a thread about her "OMG RELATIONSHIP PROBLEMS" and pretty much demonstrated utter stupidity through out the whole thread.

on a side note : the girl was a lesbian, and I was banned for calling her an attention whore, yet when a heterosexual guy posts with "OMG RELATIONSHIP PROBLEMS" No one is punished for calling him the exact same thing)

I've been with the Escapist for a while. I spend a lot of time on here, and I think it has it's good qualities and it's bad qualities. And really, I have no intention of leaving this site.

True, I thought about it when the pm came through to me, but I've tried to leave before, and basically, I have trouble finding anywhere else interesting. The only other forum I frequent is really, really slow, and for various reasons I find myself unwilling to visit others.

Besides, I love just flicking through and reading threads on here. Their content may be dull, but as far as I'm concerned, that's not the point. The point is just watching conversation fly past, something I usually find fascinating. Admittedly I don't post quite so frequently now, but that's a different matter.

* * *

Now, to talk about the Publisher's Club it's-self... this was interesting to me. I seriously considered joining, because I want to support the Escapist, and because I have wanted to be able to mess around with my title for a while now. My reasoning for not joining as of yet[footnote]May still happen, although because I waited too long, I'll have to pay more now, which kind of bothers me. Eh, oh well.[/footnote] is a little odd really. I'd be happy to pay for the content (provided I'm allowed, I haven't checked yet), but oddly enough I get the feeling that I'd miss the adverts.

No, that's not a joke. I never get what people are complaining about when they mention the adverts. The two arguments I typically see are;

Random User X said:
The adverts are irrelevant.
So? How does that make a difference? If you aren't going to click them, why should it matter what they are advertising?

Random User Y said:
The adverts mess up my screen.
Yeah, unless you have a pretty slow connection, I cant see that happening. Maybe I'm just super lucky with the adds I see, but the only time something even remotely like that happened to me was when the coding for some of the adds was wrong, and they got placed on the wrong part of the screen. The adds before certain videos can be annoying, but I'm pretty laid back about those.

Frankly, I like the adverts, and I am pretty used to them. I've grown to consider them part of the Escapist, and as bizarre as this may seem, I'd like the option to keep them if I joined the Publisher's Club.

But I'm pretty sure that the staff of this site aren't going to code that as an option just because one user who may not even join if they do requested it, so I guess it wont happen. Whatever, I'll probably join eventually if I start posting more often, just not quite yet.
