Welcome to the companion piece to the Worst Songs Of 2010! Now, believe it or not, we actually had some really good songs in 2010 and this thread is designed to determine what we, the Escapist users, found to be the very best tunes of 2010.
Unlike with the Worst Songs List, though, this forum is no contest. Because I understand that we all have wildly varying music tastes, and that we are almost certainly not as united on the Best Songs front as we are on the Worst Songs front, this is no contest. It is simply a discussion thread. Just nominate your favourite songs of the year (with a YouTube video if you wish) and state why you love that song so much! If you have multiple nominees, want to choose multiple songs from the same band or remember another song later, that's ok! Just come back and post it as well! As long as the song was released (be it for the first time or re-issued) in 2010, it's all good.
So, to kick things off, here are my choices (yes, there are a few):
Delphic - Acolyte
I absolutely love this song. It's not just the perfect melodies, the excellent structure, the huge buildups and the insane amounts of bottled euphoria that make this song my personal favourite of the year, it's the placement on the album. Nestled in as track no. 5, before the song comes on you've been treated to great, sometimes excellent, indie dance tunes. And then it appears out of nowhere and floors you. I will always remember where I was when I first heard this song (on the toilet, having a poo, with the album on my iPod, since you asked) and it helped single-handedly lift Acolyte to my Album Of The Year Award.
Gorillaz - Stylo
There may be better songs off of Plastic Beach, but this is the one that forcefully reminded me that Gorillaz were back. Having purposefully avoided listening to a single second of any Plastic Beach material before picking up the album, I was enjoying but not loving the album the first time around. But then Stylo started up (specifically, Bobby Womack's vocal sections) and everything picks up from there. It's still an excellent album, but for being the song that I genuinely stopped my first play of in order to go back and listen to again, Stylo is the best song off of it.
The XX - Crystalised
I'm using the re-issue clause here. I finally picked up the album this year, just to hear what all of the fuss was about. You know what? Just listen.
Tokyo Police Club - Wait Up (Boots Of Danger)
3:14 of pure pop bliss. Why aren't this band better known?
Kele - Tenderoni
Eyebrows were raised by me when Bloc Party announced a hiatus. Eyebrows were raised by me even higher when Kele announced his solo work would be dance orientated. My arms went even higher into the sky when the best pure dance track of the year dropped onto my ears for the first time. Even if it is a bit of a rip-off of Wiley's "Wearing My Rolex".
My Chemical Romance - Na Na Na (Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na)
Catchy as hell, simple, effortlessly brilliant. This is the excellent lead off single to their best album since Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge (hey! I liked The Black Parade! But I didn't love it like some others did).
Well, those are my initial thoughts. Sorry for the wall! Post yours below! Debate, discuss, enjoy!
