Nothing like a shot of nyquil to get you to sleep and I must say you feel great in the morning, not a sniffle in sight.

Turn off the laptop and read a book instead. I find it helps me zen where using my laptop keeps me awake. It's easier on the eyes too. And if you fall asleep while holding it you won't wake up to broken machinery!

I usually have to stay up until I actually get tired, but if I have class in the morning (college student) - and a speech to give, I have to read or watch a foreign flick or show with subtitles(more reading) - to get me drowsy

btw, midnight here

I'm in the same state as you, man.

Funny thing is, I'll be pretty tired, so I'll get ready to go to sleep - brush my teeth, that kind of stuff. Then I'll slide into bed, and I'm just not sleepy anymore.

I can spend hours just lying in bed before finally drifting off to sleep.

The other thing I do is keep reminding myself of the fact that I'm trying to sleep, so when I started drifting off into dreamland I'll think, "All right. I'm finally going." which of course snaps me out of it and I'm wide awake again. It's infuriating.

Or cheek with keyboard imprints for us tower users.

Try taking a benadryl, remember sometimes side effects are good.

But honestly, this is the first thing a doctor will tell you take before giving more potent medicines. Also, try getting more exercise during the day and you will sleep easier.

I do the same thing! ha! personally as of late I've been medicated as hell to deal with other issues that make me sleepy but when I couldn't sleep I day dream, sometimes to the point where I wouldn't want to fall asleep but I just drifted away. It also helped me get less nightmares I think.

1) If I try for 45 minutes and can't get to sleep, I'll go to the computer and pull up something like The Escapist for a few minutes, then try again. It's like hitting the reset button.

2) Pop 2 Benadryl. This is generally what I do if my sleep schedule is completely screwed up, and I need to adjust. Usually, I go with Option #1, though.

One nice thing about the collapsed economy is that my horribly underemployed self has plenty of time to sleep in.

Just think about falling asleep. Close your eyes and let the feeling just sort of overtake you as you remember it.

It's kind of the man.

I go to sleep. I just go to sleep. I stay there, trying to sleep. And if you can't get to sleep, then wait a bit, and your body will eventually get tired of being awake. Or, to go straight to sleep, do something tiring for quite a while until 11 then when you get in bed.......you're practically snoring. Works every time with me.

Sleep, those little slices of death; Oh how I loathe them - Edgar Allen Poe

I hate sleeping, but working full time really gives me no option. I used to have issues sleeping like when I was at school or college, but since starting work, I fall asleep in seconds. I think there's your answer, do more during the day! Something energetic. Vigorous exercise? Obviously involving more than the wrist. That was another misconception I had when young.

Honestly, I just lie there and try to go to sleep. It takes me about 45 minutes to an hour, and it's annoying as hell, but it works.

EDIT: I've been told that when you can't get to sleep, you aren't supposed to just lie there. You're supposed to alternate 30 minutes of lying with your eyes closed, then get up and go somewhere else, like a chair or something, and read a book or forums for 15 minutes, then try to go to sleep again.
I tried this, but found that since I had my eyes closed, I couldn't tell when it had been 30 minutes! So I set my alarm to go off after 30 minutes so I wouldn't be keeping myself awake by lying too long. I finally got to sleep and it woke me up wtf?!

Stupid idea!!one!

Sincere apologies, just the above scenario popped into my head and I couldn't resist.

Well, I find a boring book and try to read it. When it makes me sleepy, I go to sleep. (It is wise to pick a book that you already know is boring. I once picked a book I suspected would be boring, but it wasn't, and I ended up not sleeping at all.)
