First game I've really seen so far. Yay! :) Yeah, rooting for Germany. Not because I'm supposed to relate to that team as "us" but they're really playing good, enjoyable football. Will make up my mind about who else I'd like to see getting far/win.

Also, I'm digging the kind of master/apprentice match coming up with Klinsmann/Löw (USA/Germany).

Jesus Christ, what a trainwreck...

Iran-Nigeria had some bright moments, but overall it was total crap. None of them could pass or dribble to save their own lives, they lost the ball all the goddamn time, and Iran barely dared to attack. Worst game of the World Cup so far.

As for Germany-Portugal... it bored the hell out of me. Germany dominated and both teams spent a lot of time diving. Disappointing game.

And I thought Spain v. Netherlands was tragic...

The Germany Portugal match was just really, really sad. Like, almost tears sad. It's bad enough they went 4-0, and then Portugal went and redcarded one player, injured another severely. It's just not Portugal's year, is it? I was hoping for a German win, but this was less of a victory and more of just a slaughter.

Speaking of slaughter, US-Ghana is coming up in a few. It probably won't be pretty for the US, but I've five bucks that the US isn't going to score a single goal this Cup, so I'll suffer through it.

And maybe I'm late to the party, but I missed the first day, and I just found out Brazil made first blood of the entire World Cup...on itself. Sad? Hilarious? I honestly can't decide.

I think you might have just lost that bet. And it wasn't a bad goal either. :)

It's funny that the general opinion is that USA sucks when it comes to football, especially since they usually have a decent showing at the world cup. They haven't missed one since 1990 and of those six appearances they've advanced to the elimination round three times. Sure, they're far from being actual contenders to win the whole thing but I wouldn't place them at the bottom either.

Just typing that they really aren't as bad as us Europeans make out, and they only go and get the bloody winner.

They're considerably behind most European/South American teams and have made it to quarter finals exactly one time in all of the 19 football World Cups celebrated since 1930. They may not be bad but they pale by comparison with at least half the competing football teams.

There's not many better moments at a World Cup than Cristiano Ronaldo seeing his team play shit all around him and being unable to do shit to turn it around. God I hate that smug, arrogant prick.

Yeah, between Netherlands-Spain and now Germany-Portugal, I feel like this years Fifa anthem has got to be this:

I'm not sure if I agree with that. If we look at overall success in previous world cups then yes, there are many teams that have them beat. But if we look at the teams playing this year I would say that they are on pretty even grounds with at least 20 of them, that meaning that they have a reasonable chance of beating them.

Well, Brazil aren't exactly living up to the hype. Fair play to Mexico though - some fantastic work from their goalie in particular.

Just catched the end of the game and the announcer described the game as Brazil being the older brother and Mexico being the younger, annoying one that Brazil underestimated. If that's true I don't think Brazil will make it very far. I'm pretty sure they'll reach the elimination round (anything but a win against Cameroon is a stunner) but I'm starting to believe that they won't make it past the quarterfinals.

So America beat Ghana hmmm? 2-1 apparently?

I will continue to be informed by random news feeds since I really don't follow soccer that closely at all. Who and when do we play next?

USA goes against Portugal on Sunday 22 and Germany on Thursday 26. Ordinarily I'd expect it to lose against both but I suppose it has a sliver of a chance against Portugal, considering the awful performance it gave last match.

Taking bets on how much we'll (Australia) lose to the Netherlands by today, I'm thinking at least 6-0.

Fun fact, Australia has never actually lost to the Netherlands in a football match. Of the three times they played against each other, two were ties and the third was actually won by Australia. So who knows? The Australians have a hard-working tenacious team, so I hope it'll be a good match.

I'm dutch so I had fun watching the world cup so far. In general it's far more entertaining than 4 years ago.
I hope we can poke some goals in the Australian defense in a couple of hours.
