The Flat Earth Conspiracy Question

A few days ago I followed a link a fellow Escapist posted and found the Flat Earth forums. I read thier FAQ I was afraid. For those of you who may not know they believe the earth is flat and at the edges are big ice walls that prevent everything from falling off. And Nasa with the governments of the world have conspired against us regular folk by doctoring photos from space.

So here is my question. WHY? What would anyone have to gain from hiding this fact? Every other conspiracy theory has an end game. They are trying to accomplish something. Aliens have landed and the government is hiding it. Why? Because if the public knew there would be panic. Or the country with the alien could gain an upper hand in the technology race. Faking the moon landing so America could give Russia the finger. These all make sense. So what would anyone have to gain from this? Can anyone offer a logical explanation?

Perhaps they want to establish some sort of old-world theocracy, with old-world beliefs.
Either that, or they're trolling on a massive scale for the hell of it..

I thought that the edge of the world was supposed to be a big waterfall, not a giant ice wall. Remaking slightly different old-world beliefs is a terrible way to establish a conspiracy.

The only reason I could think of would be that they want to control a large volume of information, thus giving them more power over what the public believes.

Of coarse, I'm that guy who believes that the egyptions had electricity and that aliens gave them the techology to guild the pyrimids and yet, even I don't believe in the Flat Earth theory.

You are asking for a logical answer to a crazy conspiracy? Theres something about that that doesnt quite work. I thought, much like religion, you had to suspend logic a bit for conspiracies.

Sort of. Like the examples I pointed out they may not make perfect sense but there is something there to hold water and give it a touch of believability (is that a word and did I spell it right?). I am just wondering if I missed something somewhere that I can't figure out to justify this reasoning.

Its not a question of why they believe this, but why are people convincing others of this.

Was it a .com site, were they selling anything? Are they taking donations? The people running this may not really believe in what they're saying but they may get enough money to make it worth it.

There are a lot of suckers out there that will believe anything, it just depends on who gets to them first.

2.The earth is round the don't doctor photos from space if the world was round there would be an end but that's not true, you can go around the world so there for it is A SPHERE YOU DUMBASS.

Wow way to be an illiterate D-bag. If you had read the post you quoted you might have seen that I don't believe but just happened onto the site and out of a quest for knowledge actually read through it. I wouldn't expect someone like you to understand a concept like that though.

He didn't say he believed any of this, he asked what the logic was to it. Before you call people out on being idiots, check what your reading before you begin trolling.

Anywhom, if they ARE selling something or accepting donations, there you go. The only other reason is that it's some old-world group who thinks that we need to get back to our origins, similar, i suppose, to the amish (though the amish at least aren't crazy).

I know you didn't respond to me, but isn't this a bit over the top? You know, read his OP carefully, he doesn't say he believes this conspiracy, he stated that he could see no logical reason for what this supposed cospiracy was for. He stated the the cospiracists in this case gave no reason or end result as to why we are being lied about the Earth being flat.

Never once did he say he believes this stuff.

So don't you think you got just a bit emotional and overreacted to something you thought you saw (but didn't actually see)?

On topic, the best guess I could make would be to laugh at geologists. I mean, come on. Wouldn't that be funny? Hundreds of years studying the planet and they don't even know its shape. Hell, I'd engineer a conspiracy to do that.

The belief people from ?olden times? thought the world was flat is a myth.
