I agree for the most part, but fortunately, there are occasional outliers, such as Ghost in the Shell or Paprika. There are also a few that are good despite falling within the four groups mentioned. Berserk, for example, adds some actual characterization and emotional depth to the "RARGH FIGHTAN ERRYBODY MUST GET STRONGER" mentality of the first category (Admittedly, I've only read the manga, so maybe the anime is less well-written). Evangelion is something of a deconstruction of the mech genre, and manages to make itself believable despite having the usual raft of giant robot tropes.

But I fully concede that the vast majority of anime does fall into these categories, and suffers mightily from being a cliched mess of predictability. I'd suggest a couple more themes, too: Giant-Eyed Elementary School Girls With Magic Powers, and Angst-Ridden Self-Pity Fest (an admittedly broad category, but it turns up too often not to be mentioned).

I think those aren't the 4 Basic Anime Themes. Let me re-evaluate for you:

1: Giant Mech Wars (You have that)
2: Real Life with Impossible things
3: Dystopian Societies
4: Real life situations on TV
That's the kind of response I was hoping for.
What exactly do you meazn by #4? /examples
Stuff like "Lucky Star", whatever the heck Haruhi is from, and things like that. Sure, the characters are Crazy, but the situations are still plausible and real world situations.

What about, just for the sake of argument, Omoide Poroporo (sometimes called Only Yesterday) or the entire filmography of the late Satoshi Kon?

You do seem to have done a good job of summing up almost the entire mainstream of what we usually get in the West, though (as well as a huge portion of what actually sells in Japan).

Er... I think the majority of shows I've seen don't fit in with these.

-Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni, nope.
-Texhnolyze, not as far as I got.
-Ergo Proxy, nope.
-FLCL, giant mechs.
-Azumanga Daioh, nope.
-Sukisho, nope.
-Gantz, not as far as I got.
-Lucky Star, not as far as I got.
-Blue Sub No.6, nope.
-Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan (which everybody should watch because it's fucking insane), fits in with 3 and 1 to an extent
-Darker Than Black, not as far as I am.

So yeah, that's not many. Generalise generalise is generalise.

spidertank thing disagrees
Spider-tank thing is just that. A tank.

Not a mech. Still in the realms of feasibility.

All fiction can be dropped into a couple of basic categories, not just anime.

I find some of Yahtzee's opinions kinda bullshit because as far as I'm concerned, there's a good/bad example for almost anything. It's ignorant to only look at one side of the coin and make an opinion based on that alone.

OT: Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Clannad, and motherf***in' Gintama are a few counter-examples.
This post is win.

In my experience, if Yahtzee says something too broad or clearly debatable, he's probably joking for the sake of entertainment, like in this case. If you read Extra Punctuation from time to time, you'll notice he's not that bad at reasoning and not at all ignorant.

Sincerily, a fanboy LOL

Anime has the same genres that every other medium has. Seems like the OP's cliches are mostly about shonen anime type series.

In other words, science fiction involving mechs, low fantasy (plus horror), other science fiction, and realistic fiction (plus mystery and sports fiction). The only things I think you missed are high fantasy (Slayers, Zero no Tsukaima, Record of Lodoss Wars, Dragon Half, etc.) and non-giant robot based science fiction (Cutey Honey, Chobits, Outlaw Star, etc.).

Yep, I'd say those certainly are pretty basic, in several senses of the word. Still, it's a far sight better than the "androgynous, large-haired boys fighting God" stereotype that seems to have been cribbed from fifty different shows over a span of thirty years that seems to predominate people who don't know any better and care less.

Also, FLCL, my favorite show, does none of these. Except maybe the fight scenes...but hey, that's what I signed up for.

FLCL is one of my favorites, but I have to admit, it pretty much falls into every category here, not that that's a bad thing.

1. This one's a bit of a stretch, but when Haruko cut all those bullets with the razor in the barber shop. I know it's a bit of a stretch, but it was something impossible involving a blade.

2. Every episode had a robot fight, and as while whether or not all of them were large, you can't deny, the gun slinger hand was giant.

3. Naota's not really a nerd, but he can be pretty awkward sometimes, and while the women might not be trying to have sex with him persay, Haruko, Mamimi and Ninamori all come on to him pretty strong. His rejections to their advances come from his discomfort with anything sexual in nature though, seeing it as immature.

4. There is a literal right hand in the series that is a part of a thing that literally destroys.

Despite all these, it's still one of my favorite series.

Also, obligatory Cowboy Bebop doesn't fit any of these rules.

Let me have a stab at the top themes in anime

1.Underage girls(with or without huge breasts)
2.The soul(whether it`s materialized, lost, exchanged, etc)
3.Discovering a hidden power the character had all along in a critical moment.
4.Mechs

There are of course A LOT of exceptions in the form of some really great and original anime, like Satoshi Kon`s films, Death Note, FLCL, Gurren Lagann, NHK, Trapeze and the list goes on and on

Everyone's forgetting one. My personal pet peeve of anime trends; School.
I 'get it', but they're all the same T_T
