The FPS Overshadowing?

As I see more and more games coming out I am starting to notice a trend happening: Ever since Doom it seems that the FPS is over shadowing everything coming out lately with the exception of a few games like Portal (which I guess still is kind of a Puzzle/FPS game) and Socom (a third person shooter) and so many companies are too scared to release anything different from fear that it won't do well releasing with games like Homefront or Brink and I was just wondering if anyone else kinda wants this to end so that companies can start releasing better more complex games and still have a Call of Duty from time to time or are you just fine with everything the way it is?

(PS. Take some time one day and see how many new releases are coming out see how many fps's there are and then look at the non-FPS and see if you've heard of them.... Just thought that was interesting to me.)

Socom's a bit of an odd choice, isn't it? There hasn't been one of those in years, or I haven't heard of one in years at any rate.

Also, off the top of my head:
Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Final Fantasy, Grand theft auto 4 and Red dead redemption, The yearly sports titles that sell millions, Almost every big Wii game, Fallout 3 and New Vegas, Oblivion and Skyrim, Dragon Age, Demon's souls, Devil May cry, Street Fighter, The Witcher, Amnesia the dark descent, Super Meat boy etc etc. And these are all pretty new games. There's loads more. Sure FPS games may be the most popular, but saying that other genres don't get loads of attention is ridiculous.

Also, how is Portal an Fps? There's no shooting. At all. It's just in the first person perspective. FPS games don't have claim on that you know. Or is Oblivion an Fps too by your logic?

Being honest those are just AAA titles. While you are right it leaves the other genres as risk takers and small indie games.Giving us some sudden gems that you don't expect.Remember the late 80s early 90s when that genre was sidescrollers? It didn't take a while to get em outruled. It's just that a shooter can provide you with everything for a good game should you want it.There's still a lot of hack n slash and rpgs coming out.

I'm looking over my list of upcoming games I'm interested in... and not even a quarter of them are FPS, and I'm always on the look-out for a good shooter.

I don't play First Person Shooters and yet I'm having no problem finding games I like.

FPS games are the ones that publishers will throw the money at. But money doesn't come close to making a good game. Some of the most fun I've had in the last year has been from games such as VVVVVV, King Arthur - The Roleplaying Wargame, Spellforce, Sins Of A Solar Empire and The Witcher. All of these are games developed on a small budget, and all have entertained me more than most AAA titles.

In fact, I always wonder where the money goes with the 'big' titles, and all I can guess is advertising. If Creative Assembly can put out a title as massive as Total War, then why do the FPS games which typically last 5 hours cost so much more? Playtesting a 5 hour game wouldn't take as long as an RTS with hundreds of hours of gameplay, nor would ensuring it is balanced. So either all that extra money is spent on marketing the next CoD, MoH, Halo or Killzone or there are some developers/consultant embezzeling the shit out of the publisher.

I think there seems to be a movement towards RPG-type games now. With Halo retired and CoD on it's way out of the door I think we're going to start moving towards Bioware/Bethesda clones dominating the AAA market.

There will always be a market for FPS games now. Multiplayer modes now probably take a comfy second place as the biggest online component in gaming, right behind MMOs. There are too many of us now. We can never go back......

Since Portal 2 already came out, the only games I'm honestly looking forward to this year are Batman: Arkham City, and Skyrim. I actually think FPS games may be calming down a little.

Mainstream FPSs give the genre a bad name, at a glance all you see are endless CoD clones and bland third person chest-high-walls 'em ups. But if you actually look deeper, there's more too it then that.

I don't think FPSs are overshadowing anything. I know I've seen the most advertisements for L.A. Noir recently, much more than any other game. And I know that for a while after Pokemon White/Black came out, I didn't hear much of any advertising for games except those.

You are in the first person perspective, and you have a GUN that SHOOTS portals. Thats how.

OT: Since Bungie left Halo and CoD is withering into obscurity (and those two are the two main FPS's), I feel like the genre isn't going to dominate the market for much longer.

I have. Clearly, you haven't.

In 2010 there were more Hack and Slash AND more fighting games released than FPS's.
In 2009 there were more open world games released than FPS's.
In 2008 there were more racing games released than FPS's.

However, you know what there was more of in those three years? People whining about how there is "nothing but FPS's". Its a simple case of a completely overblown problem - its like people who are convinced there is more crime these days, because there is more attention payed by people to blow crimes out of proportion. And in games, we have people who will whine endlessly about hwo there is "nothing but FPS's" released, who just cover up the reality.
I didn't say that there is nothing but FPS's I was saying that FPS's are more known than other games and this is causing the problem that FPS's are making more money then any other genre around

I love FPS, but ones that have other gameplay elements added to them. RPG elements, hack and slash, puzzles, etc.

The problem I have with FPS games now is how they all want to be CoD, even though it's not even that good and mostly fueled by hype.

That's just my two cents.

To be fair to the OP, he's not saying there's more FPSs out there, he's saying the attention is almost exclusively being given to those titles. Specifically, that FPSs overshadow other titles.

Yes, people at the escapist who are "into games" are going to be able to name other titles. You're really going to put up Dark Descent next to Call of Duty? Amnesia was a great game, way better than COD, but seriously.

COD:BO: $650 million in sales in the first 5 DAYS
Amnesia: Developer shocked at the success of $4 million sales in first 5 MONTHS.

Overshadowed. The worse game wins. It wins a lot. It has 20 times the attention, the marketing, the TV slots, the online hype, and the only place you'll not see that is specialist sites where people care about the medium.

Nobody has heard of Dark Descent. Nobody. A community the size of the population of Greece (or Ohio) have bought COD. A population the size of Vanuatu (or 1/2 Wyoming) have bought Amnesia.

Now, in an attempt to drag this back on topic: Why?

Thats rather subjective you know, many people would consider Call of Duty a better gaem, theyre not ever comparable really, completely different genres

OT: Yes FPS's are overshadowing other games because theyre popular, it doesnt affect you, and until it does theres no reason to complain

Well I'll definately say I'm not interested in Brink... Any game trailer that show 10, yes, TEN action rolls/somersaults and it's not included in the gameplay is false advertising.

There is also Killzone and Metal of Honor and Battlefield also winning the Sales Records but since you are deciding that your too stubborn to accept another persons viewing of how well games are doing then thats your choice, good day
