The "fun-shooters" return. But why would anyone want that?

A somewhat misleading term, that refers to the kind of fps we had before there was half-life, before there was Modern Warfare, before there was halo.
How the hell can you compare Halo and CoD to Half Life? And Ive had a MAJOR problem with FPSs lately, Dont get me wrong, I really love a good single player, but I miss the days of actual skill-based fps like Quake3. UT99/2k4, and BF2 and while Duke Nukem and Bulletstorm wont bring that back... Well it just feels better than my only choices being a CoD clone vs a Halo clone

Because I'm tired of playing the same Rainbow Six/Private Ryan knockoffs. Sometimes, life could use a little Wikus.

...Okay, a LOT of Wikus.

I was merely reciting games that are well known and commonly agreed to have considerably advanced the genre in their own ways.

Variety...plain and simple! After a while, you get tired of super serious ultra realistic military shooters and then you just wanna kill aliens with guns the size of a car!

When every game that comes out is a gritty shooter that's all about 'gun porn' where it's got all these attachments and color scheme changes and you hide behind walls to recover health, it's annoying because that's ALL THAT COMES OUT.

And seriously...if you think level is better and more exciting now with all the story line nonsense and wave of wall hidery...

You'd be very wrong.

Because I enjoy games that don't mind taking the piss out of themselves. Also, I don't care all that much for the generic gritty style of a lot of modern FPS games. You may think the older ones were more stupid, and you are very much entitled to your own opinion, but I don't think serious is necessarily the same as smart. Contrast Hot Fuzz with, oh, I don't know... Most other modern action movies?
Good point here, actually - but Hot fuzz had, aside from the comedy, a plot, competent people in both crew and cast, character development, all that. And that's all fine.

But saying the Old Sam/duke games are better then say Modern Warfare, strikes me as saying some 80ths Van Damme flick is totally better then inception "because dude, that takes it self soo serious".
idk dude i kinda like bloodsport more than inception....

While I'm still not a 'dude', more power to you - I'm not saying you can't like it, I'm just saying that I lack the understanding of how one could possibly have such preferations, hence why I made this thread, asking for why you'd like a movie like that.

I think there should be no objection against a shooter genre like this returning to the gaming world. I loved Halo, CoD and many shooters after that. But I think everyone will agree with me that only giving us jungles or dark gritty worlds is getting rather old.

Hopefully someone will create a game with the insane action of over the top shooters like the ones you are so worried about, but without the humor of a 12 year old kid. But I am still waiting for the day where they give Tim Shafer a big bag of money and tell him to produce a great shooter (sequel for psychonauts would be nice as well ;p).

I do think it's good to have more variety in the genre. Although I still stand by my earlier comment about Duke Nukem.

Hang on though, people keep saying modern shooters (CoD in particular) have no sense of humour. Have we all forgotten the 'A Bad Year' cheat in CoD4, where every enemy you killed exploded into a cascade of bouncing car tyres that could kill other enemies if they got hit in the head, sometimes leading the a chain reaction of explody bouncy death...

And you say modern shooters are no fun.

That might be it, but the fact that my significant other shares that opinion, gives me hope that the reason of my disapproval of such games isn't Pms :p

Disclaimer: This is by no means a judgement on the upcoming games, I don't know those. It's just that all the "good old games" mentioned in the various discussions about these games, are from my perspective horribly boring, repetetive grindfests soaked in testosterone and immaturity, and that I'm trying to grasp why anyone would want a game coming out in 2011 to be like a game that wasn't any good in 1995.
Yes, that's precisely why the topic of your title goes "Why would anyone want that."
Because it is exclusively from your perspective.

*Sigh* It's one of those topics.

OT: To answer the question: Why would I want that?
The same reason I don't want every movie to try to be Citizen Kane; I occasionally like a "Naked Gun" thrown in there as well.
Serious vs Comedy. Hell, I actually enjoyed Bad Company's less-serious approach. I'm personally rather tired of the Tom Clancy/Starship Troopers nonsense that keeps cropping up into every game featuring an assault rifle.

Of course, every single time someone comes to dethrone these games, they're doing it along the lines of "It's sexist and misogynistic! A byproduct of darker days long past! It's not funny!"
And every one of these arguments then fails utterly to substantiate that claim beyond the subjective. They say it isn't funny, I find the jokes to be hilarious.
They find the combat to be repetitive, I find it entertaining to blow 100 targets away in a single level with a variety of weapons.

See, it's entirely subjective.

My problem with these recent arguments is that it allows no provision for taste, but rather attempts to imply that if you ENJOYED games like Duke Nukem, Serious Sam, etc, you are now inferior to them by virtue of having poor taste.

If that seems like a rather shallow argument, that's because it's what we're left with when you make an argument that's purely subjective; the topic itself can no longer be objectified, so that only leaves those who are discussing the subject involved. The argument becomes a veiled attack on the audience for these other, older titles; it's such pretentious bullshit, and I would rather it stopped.

I loved that cheat.

Seriously though, why can't we have both?
Agreed, although Duke Nukem annoys me. Just the whole "Hail to the King" attitude that the fans praise, even though if he actually existed in real life, he would be the biggest twat on the face of the earth and no-one would give him the time of day.

I'm still undecided about Duke. I enjoyed Duke3D way back when, but that was largely because the realistic settings (as opposed to Doom's "this kind of looks like a military base"), novelty weapons, and interactive environments were a welcome addition to the FPS. The humor was hit-and-miss, but there was just all sorts of cool bits... that were almost immediately taken away when games went 3D about a year later with Quake. A lot of the interactive stuff I see in gameplay videos just looks kind of crap. Why do I want to draw stuff on a white board? Why do I want to rip the chest plate off of an enemy (sounds like the sort of QTE shit I hated in God Of War)? But I do want to get shrunk down and run around in a RC car.

The silly humor of Bulletstorm... not really what I'm interested in. What I find more interesting is the whole Kill With Skill system and the promise of all sorts of cool weapons. This holds the promise of some new game play mechanics... and if I get a good laugh out of it, I'm happy.

Serious Sam 3... this is really all about the promise of fast-paced, hard-core action. If it wasn't for Serious Sam 2, I'd be really excited, but they've already proven that they can miss the point of what made the original game enjoyable, while completely failing to fix the more tedious elements of its gameplay.

But mostly I view these three games as a chance to see the return of some cool game mechanics that have fallen out of favor. I want to be able to go out, buy three or four new games and get three or four different takes on the same genre. Raiding the past is a great way to find workable, popular ideas that you can rework and introduce to a new audience.

Maybe that's part of the appeal. You can like a character that you would absolutely hate in real life. I really like Green Arrow as a character but, if he were real, I would consider the guy to be the lowest of the low (costumed vigilantism aside).

Realism in shooters is a barrier to creativity. Frankly almost every story in a game sucks anyway so I'd rather they just stop trying and elevate shooting mechanics back to where Quake 3 left them; a beautiful ballet of explosions and precision shooting.
Quake 3 was horrible.
Everyone just used the rail-gun, the single player "campaign" was just unreal tournament all over again and it was beyond retarded.
No subsequent game in the series has been able to recreate the wonder and atmosphere of the very first Quake.
Then they brought in the strogg and the series went downhill so fast.
IV Was horrible, had barely any plot and was just trying to cash in on Doom 3's success, a little too late.

I liked Lo Wang from Shadow Warrior because everyone in the game treated him like the annoying twat he was. Mind you, it was far more sexist, racist, and stupid than Duke Nukem. But it was sort of like Crank 2, which was so over-the-top racist and sexist and mean-spirited that you found it hard to take seriously.

I still like using my old woman voice and saying "I'd like some Wang".
