I say, who cares? It may not matter to the universe, but it matters to somebody (unless you're one of those philosophical pricks who believe that he is the only real human and everything's an illusion, but are you really willing to take that risk). I could kill every human on Earth, and it wouldn't matter in terms of existence. Nothing matters, but do we really need a higher purpose to live life? What about happiness, for yourself and for your fellow man? Sure, you die one day, but isn't that more of a reason to enjoy your stay in life? And maybe nothing happens after death, in that case you won't feel it, cause you'll be dead. All that really matters is life, so if you want to waste it with nihilism, go ahead. But I'd recommend living life, and living good. Just go out and do something. Not because it matters, but because you want to. You may not serve a higher power, but you're serving yourself. Shouldn't that be good enough?

Congratulations, you are officially boring.

Yes we all die, so why not try to have a good time before you do kick the bucket, and try and make the most of your life like pretty much everybody else does.

Put yer fuckin' man suit on.

Why? Money is just currency. It's useless until you buy something with it.

If you can't see how that would make "blind bit of diffence", then you're truly blind.

It may not shake the universe to its core, but human lives would be objectively ended. What sodding scale are you measuring meaning on where that doesn't even register a blip?!

Hah, best answer I've seen on a forum for a while.

The idea that you're going to die eventually and thus life is meaningless is like saying a race is pointless because eventually you get to the finish line. It doesn't begin to make sense. Life isn't "about" anything until you decide it is, and just because you're mortal that doesn't mean that life is worthless. If anything it makes it a hell of a lot more meaningful.

I thought I would start this thread because I am in dire need of a debate, or at least an intellectual discussion. I know this particular topic may have been discussed alot on the forums, so I wish to avoid the whole 'Meaning of Life' dispute.

Now, I feel that there is absolutely no purpose for anything that occurs anywhere in the universe (or, indeed, in others). I could take a gun and kill anyone I damned well please and, for all intents and purposes, it wouldn't make a blind bit of difference. I could discover the cure for cancer, but what good would that do? Everything is going to die eventually.

I could elaborate further, but I want to hear your opinions first.

Thoughts?
If you believe that there is no meaning to life, make one for yourself.
I don't necessarily mean parenting, but if you wish to interpret my statement as such, so be it. It is a possible valid interpretation.

If you aren't concerned with continuation of the Status Quo, change things in some way that will be meaningful to you or set out into the world beyond the space between your ears, the one that will continue to be no matter what your perception of it is, even long after your ability to perceive it is long lost, to find that meaning.

Maybe that is exactly wrong for you and the answer is instead to journey deeper into your own mind or explore your own body (take that however you will). Body modification might be just the thing for you, be it simple surface level augmentation or fundamentally changing your body's very genetic structure. If you have no knowledge of genetics, you can always learn it. If nothing else is important to you, anyway, you can focus entirely upon your studies. Changing oneself can change both the way one sees the world and how one can interact with it.
(Trees don't have existential crises, do they? You could be a tree. Isn't that at least a novel life goal?)

Then again, you may not wish to put forward any effort to change yourself or the universe around you into something more interesting. Fine enough. You could just drop out of society and wander around the world, going whereever your whims take you with no particular goal in mind. You likely would cease to care about futility, only utility with no social support system acting to sustain you.

Losing interest in worldly things is hardly some defeat and it most definitely does not have to be the end.

Fair enough, so he desires power.
It's just his answer seems like the "I wish for an infinite number of wishes" answer to the genie question.

Yes I desire power, and have been contemplating just what lengths I would go to, to aquire the power.

let me guess, you want the money or you'll cut off Bunni's toe?

but seriously.
you can wallow and wonder about all of the futility of things and thinking that you will never change anything- or you can just accept that and at least live for something to enjoy the time that you have. I know some people have said that that would be lying to yourself that you are changing things.

But I just want to live my life and enjoy that time, not even caring if I necessarily change major things in anything- regardless of if I can or not. Thinking too much about things that I cannot change... stands directly in the path of that. And you cannot just stop and do nothing when you cannot change something.

I am a Nihilist, in a sense, and much more, and I believe there is no significance in anything, but, I diverge from other opinions at this point.

Existence is pointless, yes, but that does not mean it cannot be enjoyable, or have it's own façade of goals, I willingly create and use a façade of goals, morals, and loves, because I wish to enjoy this life, because while insignificant, it can still be fun.

If you hadn't scratched No.4 I'd have accused you of having OCD too? Doesn't it just make life so damn painful?! Thank God for internet available walkthroughs that get you from 99% to 100%!

Nihilism seems to be very 'cool' these days. I don't understand this because it's been done to death. This is nothing new. Congratulations for working out that we're all going to die and our actions likely won't make any difference in the long run. That's life. As far as we know you only get one so instead of speculating on whether or not your actions will make a difference, try having a little fun and cheer the fuck up.

I don't get a lot of that one.

That came across as sarcastic, but it honestly isn't - no really, because I know that sounded sarcastic too. Damn the futility of it all and expressing sentiment by type (do you see what I did there?).

Yes, you could say that life is futile, but then what the fuck are you doing here?
Jump off the goddamn bridge already.

But what is the question?
It answers the question correctly "what is the meaning of life?". Anyway, I have to agree with nihilism. My hypothosis is that since existence came to be not through intelligent design, it can not have any goals. Without any goals, it has no purpose. If existenece has no purpose and you're part of it, then you are just a part of a purposeless device. Hence you have no purpose.
