Undoubtably, the first half of 2009 has seen some big names hit the shelves; with Killzone 2, Resident Evil 5, Red Faction and the like laying down the gauntlet for games of the latter half of the year. Sports fans will revel in the blood, sweat and tears shed in Fight Night Round 4, Racing fanatics pounding the asphalt tracks and conquering the Nurburgring and, quite obviously, the millions of expectant fans anticipating the follow up to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, a game that revolutionised online FPS. Or does the best game of 2009 lie elsewhere? Fat Princess will be arriving shortly on the PSN; a game predicted to re-invent the way we view downloadable games. Perhaps it is not the year of the Playstation or Xbox. The Nintendo Wii, a giant in the gaming industry worldwide, has seen remarkable sales of top titles; more affordable than it's current generation consoles, is value for money what we seek most during this recession? The more niche markets, PC/Mac gamers, may also want a shout for some of their new releases.
Regardless of your opinion, both Escapist Forum users and I would greatly appreciate any contributions you may have.

I look forward to reading all replies.

Jake.

I think Mass Effect 2 will be really exciting, as well as Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days and KH:Birth by Sleep.

I hope Bioshock 2 will be.

I don't think I have bought any games that have been released this year as of yet. Most of what I've seen hasn't impressed me. Killzone 2 looks good but I don't have a PS3 so I can't comment really.

Dragon Age has the most potential of anything coming in 2009.

Someone is going to have to *really* sell me on Bioshock 2. I liked the first one, but mostly because of the story and atmosphere (as a shooter, it was mediocre and half-assed), and it's not the type of story that seems like it needs a sequel.

I think mine's inFamous so far, but there hasn't been much to impress me yet. Hopefully things will pick up. Definitely looking forward to Arkham Asylum though.

It isn't GOTY material but it is worthy of an honorable mention. Wolverine!!! Ya thats right a movie based game. Although it could be all the absolute shit games I have played lately that is clouding my judgement.

Modern Warfare 2 is the early and obvious frontrunner for 2009 GOTY. Mass Effect 2 would be the game competing with it, but it appears to be scheduled for early 2010 release.

Other than MW2, inFamous was great and Bioshock 2 looks decent, though I heard the multiplayer feels bland and uncreative.

I am seriously looking forward to the Conduit, maybe that will be a surprise winner. Who knows, it may also be a flaming pile of effluent.

It all depends if Blizzard can drop Starcraft 2 or Diablo 3 in Q4 '09. If they can, either of those titles are going to be heavy contenders. If not, I honestly have no idea. People seem to be enjoying Red Faction: Geurilla a lot though.

Couldn't be much further from the truth there, it's very similar to.. oh, let's just say CoD2, and the persistent unlocks were done in Battlefield 2.

Anyway, if either Starcraft 2 or Diablo 3 drop in 09, it'll be that. Otherwise, I'll just have to accept that there's nothing worth playing this year, unless Valve or Sid Meier release a surprise title without L4D2 in its name.

So P.C gaming has become a niche market...how far we have fallen *cries*

Hmm I'm really looking forward to Thief 4 and deus ex 3 but theres no chance of those coming out this year. Aside from that like everyone else has mentioned Modern Warfare 2, Mass effect 2, definitely Dragon Age, possibly ODST and is Arma 2 out yet?

I would say Modern Warfare 2 is going to be 2009's GOTY as theres no doubt its going to sell.

I think that all good games are equal but if I have to decide... the second Portal ( it will probably not be called Portal) or Assassin's Creed 2

I've read it's all right, but the AI isn't great, and it only stands out because it's on the Wii. (Nintendo Power gave it an 8.0)

Also: no ME2 this year? (Sad Face)

If not ME2, MW2. I loved the first one, and the sequel is looking even better.

Sales =/= quality
Yeah but you have to argue that sales are essential to the whole game of the year thing a lot of good games are overlooked because they didnt sell
