FEAR was an awful game, never understood the attraction, it never lived up to the F.E.A.R. factor to me at all...

Half-Life 2 had some great atmosphere, like Ravenholm... that place was nuts, and on the Xbox 360 they have an achievement to beat Ravenholm using only the Gravity Gun... that really brought it home...

Deus Ex. The use of different locations, the music, the plot, the characters, the really convincing movement from anti-terrorist missions to unravelling global conspiricy; just perfect...

I have to say S.T.L.K.E.R.: shadow of chernobyl.

No other game has made me jump an inch of my seat or had me genuinly scared to go around the next corner.

I thought LoZ:Twilight Princess did an exceptional job compared to previous titles of truly capturing the divinity and mysticism of Hyrule, so I'm gonna go with that.

Though have to mention Shadow of the Colossus, too.

System Shock 2 IMO was FAR better at atmosphere than Bioshock. Bioshock has some spots that make you jump, but all in all, I didnt feel a PART of the world, especially when there is disconnecting events, such as early in the game, getting the first plasmid...

Why would I, a stranded person fresh from a plane crash, finding a strange needle thing, without even QUESTIONING wtf it is, just straight up inject myself with it? Im sorry, but that ripped me out of the game faster than anything else Ive experienced before (in a FP game).

I think so many people are saying Bioshock simply because, in the scheme of things, they are new to gaming, and when your game experience is limited to pretty much the past 5-6 years, well, your perceptions of what makes a good game is (IMO) a bit skewed.

There are many games I love the atmosphere and feel of. One of them has got to be Skies of Arcadia. Yes, an rpg, but it was an rpg done right. I was sucked into Skies of Arcadia and played for hours on end, then felt the upset when I knew the game was going to end soon. Final Fantasy VII was another one, especially in the beginning around the slums.

The Ratchet and Clank series (the first three, anyway) have great atmosphere.

I also agree with Lvl 64 Klutz's post.

Believe it or not I have not played Half Life 2 yet. I did try Bioshock, but stopped due to repetitive gaming motion sickness.

Too true - but I think in terms of atmosphere it was just outdone by Ico.

Snatcher had a fantastic tone, even if it was ripped wholesale from Balde Runner - looking forward to seeing what Kojima and Suda51 do with the Snatcher property.

Grim Fandango, I was so sucked into the land of the dead that I teared up when it was over.

Super Mario Sunshine, I wasn't a huge fan of the game itself, but the environment was pretty decent, especially when you've cleaned up most of the game and the island is at full sunshine.

Zork: Grand Inquisitor. Beautifully crafted world (especially the contrast between Port Foozle and the Underground) with a surprising amount of detail, and such a wonderfully twisted sense of humor.

+1 for Super Mario Sunshine and Grim Fandango.

However, for me, Silent Hill 3 wins for me.

Myst IV: Revelation deserves a mention also.

Well, the one sticking in my mind at the moment are the early parts of condemned 2, before the utter collapse of the story. Mostly because it's the last game I played...
