this thread confuses me greatly :S

lots of the games listed here are some of my favourites, some of the games i was most impressed with, clearly i am odd...

but more on topic...hmm...cant think of any off hand...but...i can guarantee lots of people will be let down by gears 2...

well wait, no...cause most of them will just except gears again, because they are unimaginative and suck and finding good games...

ive had my moan for the day, time to be nice again...awww

Bioshock
Star Wars: The Forsc Unleashed (the game wasn't bad but a bit buggy)
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty
FF XII (the story sucked and I hate Vaan but not a bad game but FF IX is better IMO)

I tend not to expect too much of games anymore. If you expect a pile of shit and don't get a pile of shit, you're pleasantly surprised. If you expect the world and get Liechtenstein, well, you're going to be angry about losing that much money.

Is it just me, or do more and more highly-expected games disappoint players lately?

Is this a trend? And if so, what would cause it, and what will the result be?

Could this be an omen for a new market crash? Or are these signs that the marketing and hype market is saturated, and more effort should be put into the actual games? (where effort is not just extra money for more artists).

Escapist Magazine, I See An Article.
I would say it is a direct result of the fact that we let them get away with it. If you cut necisary development of a game in half but hype it to high hell and pay off some reviewists you stand to make a heck of alot more than you do with a great game 5 years in development. Its a direct result of us continuing to buy shity games. Only buy the best and they will start to loose money putting out this junk.

Other contributing factors are the focus on graphics over gameplay and overinvolvment from marketing aspects of companys. The fact that EA and Microsoft own everything and push out games people are excited about 2 years too soon doesn't help.

also yes, halo 2 was a huge dissapointment, halo 3 aswell.

Quite a list just from the last year or two.

Too Human:
Terrible, terrible controls and camera angles. Hell, pretty terrible story as well.

Turok:
Damn you! Why did you have to go an ruin one of my favorite old FPS franchises?

Alone in the Dark:
Just....bad. All around. Not even having pretty fire can save this game.

Kane and Lynch: Dead Men:
Not really bad, just mediocre. I was expecting a lot more.

Assassins Creed in the story department. What the fuck, Ubisoft? You should have just made the game were you're an assassin during the crusades. That's it! None of that 'reliving your ancestors memories through a machine' bullshit.

Assassins creed sucked, I seemed so cool at the time. I may be the only human on the earth to say this but GTA IV. Once you've played it through and done some sandbox joy you've ended up seeing everything. It just got too old too fast.

I know I'm gonna get a lot of heat for this, but Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem.
Maybe because it was too overhyped by the people I know. But when I bought it, I was expecting the best damn game in the world. And in that respect, I was severely disappointed. By all aspects of the game. The graphics, the story, the gameplay. All were fairly decent. No more, no less.

I'm gonna say The Movies by Lionhead Studios.
I had been looking forward to it for years and then found out it wasn't much of a game.
Making movies with the game takes lots of time and effort and gives you hardly any rewards, except for the negative comments of wannabe film critics who don't understand you were just trying to have a good time when you upload your work on the website.
The management of your film studio was like a different game which had nothing to do with your actual movies.

I just have to mention Spore...
Although I think the creature creator and the other creators are brilliant, you don't 'play' creators. What you do play was just to shallow and repetitive, but I'm sure this has been said for a million times in this topic already.

I had totally forgotten about The Movies. I really wanted that game to be good, as I had thought it was going to almost be an awesome tool for machinima or at least something that you could make awesome movies with, also the community features looked really cool. But sadly it wasn't meant to be.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. So, so bad in so many ways.
I can't understand why, I concede the Jedi duels are way harder than the rest of the game, but I was creeping out people in the subway this evening back from work, I was radiating pure glee when I smashed that AT-ST with those pillars...

Oh yeah, and I was soooooo happy to finally vent my anger because, you see, there is a motherfucking strike on the subway service until Wednesday (Monday evening in Paris right now), and these bastards made me come 3 hours late to the office and I had to stay extra...

Dark Sector. I really wanted that game to be awesome. It came out in a dry spell of new games and eight hours later it got put on the shelf where it has lived ever since.

Oh, (this is an edit) I almost forgot about Alone in the Dark! It was so terrible, I mailed it to a friend on XBL to try it just for the trainwreck factor. We laughed! and laughed, and laughed.

New Super Mario Bros. There's something very wrong about a Mario game you can 100% on your FIRST attempt in 6 hours.

I don't have "highest" expectations anymore. But I was expecting a lot more quality out of Mass Effect than it served up.

The "driving" component was lousy, especially the "art" used for the terrain. It was all the same. There are like twelve classes to choose from, but the game is designed to be played as a soldier, obviously. The other classes seemed like an after shot. There are so many harsh vid clips, and buggy movement / texturing.

Then the writing... four years of development and it is so hit and miss. The peppering of good writing is just thrown out the window with crap like "you guys are criminals, and I can kill criminals" while coyly playing around with the pistol... that's what passwes for some of the best writing in the game's industry?

Pfft.

You did complete Mario Bros 3 and Mario World 100% in 6 hours in the VERY FIRST attempt, or are you talking about Mario Land 2 and Mario Sunshine ?

Because usually a Mario game was hard to master... Hell I played SMW in 1993, and I still can't beat the SPECIAL World (especially Tubular).
