Mine would be command and conquer 3 on PC. When I first heard that there was going to be another tiberium universe C&C I was psyched, even more so when I heard that it was coming to xbox 360, since my computer at that time was complete and total crap that could barely run RA2. So I got it for 360 and I loved it. Everything worked, just a few glitches, (like the engineer glitch) but they weren't that hard to deal with, and almost no underpowered units. A friend and I got really good at it, us as a team hardly ever lost, life was grand- and then we heard that there weren't going to be any patches. Ever. But the PC version had lots of patches! Glorious, glorious patches! No more engineer glitch! Underpowered units finally getting some action! So my friend and I both went out and got brand new computers and brand new PC copies of C&C 3 and it's expansion, only to find that the fine game we had come to know and pwn at had been patched beyond recognition. Suddenly, dudes with flamethrowers could beat low tech anti-infantry vehicles, there were things you could do that were pretty much big red WIN buttons, and a whole bunch of other things that made me long for the good old days of me, my 360, and my copy of of C&C 3.

Expectations are your own, fully your own and nothing but your own responsibility. Unless something has been explicitly promised and that didn't show up, any failure in meeting expectations is your own problem.

I fall under the category as most of the pessimists. I follow the philosophy that it is better to underestimate and be suprised than overestimate than be disappointed. That being said, there were a couple of games I was retarded enough to build up.

Spore

Why, why oh why. I was so excited when the concept was announced, I NEVER followed the game, I think I looked at 2 youtube videos showing off the editors, other than that I never even looked at a review or anything. Yet I still got too excited.

Pros: Simple Editors(Even I could make something that looked professionalish), DLC(I'm sorry, I love blowing up my friends species')

Cons: Repeditive, Bland Gameplay, OBVIOUS ripping, short(I flew past the grog and into the center of the galaxy thus "winning the game" after 45 mintues of space stage.

Halo(Series)

This series should never have been born, nor conceived. Apparently Microsoft in there infinite wisdom promised us a fun compelling story, albeit I dont play alot of games I really didn't know many Space Oriented Games. And I LOVE space, and the concept of a Story from space was like crack at the time. However what did I get? A monumentously flawed storyline, whos only connecting point was the game manual.

Pros: Its Space, it's microsoft(maybe?)

Cons: Xbox Exclusive(Are you kidding me, any fps that FORCES Players to use a joystick needs to be burned), Bad Storyline(I like to think of it as Directed multiplayer gaming), retarded concept(This is Human, This is alien, this is another alien, this is death star, Have fun player!)

And the king of it all.

Vanguard: Sage of Heroes

Yes I know, ALL MMO'S are let downs, but after Ultima Online breathed its last good breath, sometime before Renisance, I thought I would NEVER see a good MMO ever again. When I started reading up on Vanguard I was excited. This was basiccly UO on crack, or so I thought. When Sony took over I even excused that, being a sony hater for life stupid 14 expansion makers, because it looked so damn beautiful. So I got accept for beta, hopped into the game and what did I see. Upwards 13 servers? All of Which buggy as sin. I dropped the game that same week.

I came back a year later to find a more stable game, stable enough to REALLY play at least. So I got a mount, yay so mounts are fun. Then I found out that housing was pretty damn sweet, you had to build a house from scratch using crafting. But whats this, DESIGNATED housing plots!

Crafting, it's very intuitive, and unlike wow I cant just say, make all and go eat. I have to focus, and do it all in one long process... Awww that so damn cool... Wait Complications? Wait WTF I get a B Grade because I was missing 1 Actionpoint! WTF THE RECIPIE REQUIRES A PERFECT "A"! Wasted mats.

Ultima Online Vanguard
Mounts Useful, cool to Tame Um, you buy most of them... Wow...
Housing Free Reign, No Upkeep housing Plot Specific, Upkeep Housing(EXTREMELY overpriced)
Crafting Leaves alot to be desired Nice concept, HORRIBLY done.

The Icing on the cake for me was, they STILL have 4 servers, they are splitting up a 4000 playerbase, amongst 4 servers... Telon is EASILY 4x the size of WoW. Yet the retards still split it up. Wow, they must be sony... Oh wait.

Thats basiclly my rant, sorry for all that.

Although like an idiot I'm excited for.
Fable 2
Sims 3
Fallout 3

Another game that let me down was CoD 3. I absolutely loved CoD 2 (M1 garand, bitches!) and I couldn't wait for CoD 3 which would have grenade cooking, a sprint button, a new story, 32 player multiplayer, etc. I was so excited for it that I actually pre-ordered it (a first for me) at my local game stop. So I went and bought it on release day, popped it in, and started up story mode. CoD 2 was one big thrill ride throughout the story, So fun that I replayed it several times, even on insane mode, and still loved every moment, even on the Xth play through. I played CoD 3 story once. It was full of gimmicks and crappy vehicle sections, and wasn't very fun. It felt like some other WWII game that had just been renamed CoD 3. And then there was multiplayer. Multiplayer was Battlefield with a WWII theme, with poorly done EVERYTHING. Tanks and stuff were utterly useless, as as soon as you got in one, some guy would spawn with a rocket launcher and oneshot you. My precious M1 garand hardly spawned with any ammo, so I'd end up spending the game chasing some support guy around begging for some ammo. And said support guy would never give me any ammo, either because he didn't have a mic in, or because he thought he was rambo and was too busy attempting to mow down hordes of Nazis, or because hes was just a DICK. Oh, and the rocket launcher class counted as a support class, so a dude with a rocket launcher essentially had infinite ammo where ever he went. Now, I've never been a fan of the rocket launcher, since it's a One hit KO weapon, but at least in games like Halo it was a power weapon that spawned one every 3 minutes and came with 4 shots and was in a open area with no cover and most maps had one, if any, so it wasn't that bad. But CoD 3 came along and made it so the one hit KO weapon had infinite ammo and was instantly spawned with at any moment by anyone. And it made vehicles useless. So within a week, we were back on CoD 2, And loving it.

I would not have bought CoD 4 if it wasn't made by Infinity Ward, and I'm not going to buy another CoD game until CoD 6, since CoD 5 is going to be made by Trearch, just like CoD 3.

Trearch- ruining franchises since CoD 3

Army of Two.

The thing that really pissed me off, is that I spent 4 days palying with my brother (forgiving the shitty AI, loose controls, and overall shortness) unlocking everything before going online.....And then finding out that everything I unlocked is not usable online. They made you earn shit like it was a goddamn shitty counter strike ripoff.

Don't you watch any of Yahtzee's reviews? If you like everything these days congratulations, your standards have been worn down to a stump!
No, actually I can't stand Yahtzee's reviews. He was good a year ago, but he's deteriorated into self-parody and loathing. He bitches and complains because he knows people eat it up.

People are so eager to ***** about anything that they don't let themselves enjoy anything, either.
To me you are the only one bitching here, Yahtzee brings up alot of good points and he is a critic duh! he finds all the flaws and exploits them. I can't believe you only came onto this topic just whine about other peoples opinions, thats just pathetic!

I thought most people come to this forum because of Yahtzee, I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for him.

i know people are gonna have at me for this, but HL2 was an epic disappointment for me.

i was told by all my mates that it was epic storytelling and immersive action and blah blah blah.

i went into the game and it went like this:

run around until you get to the point where alyx rescues you.

here, have a fat chunk of story: *THUMP*

now go kill manhacks for a while.

oh, good boy, as a reward, have another fat chunk of story: *WHAM*

now go kill repetitive enemies.

have story.

kill enemies.

have story.

if you look in gmod, there's like 20 different NPC's in total, including pigeons and the unique NPC's. there's probably less then 10 different actual enemies.

basically, the combats a bunch of boring grinding, where you use the same tricks to kill the same enemies for bloody hours, interspersed with light freckles of simple physics puzzles.

the storyline is delivered in huge chunks, rather then dripped into the game. so jarring a transition exists between action and story parts of the game they might was well use scrolling text.

the story itself is a bad imitation of George Orwell, who i never liked as a author anyway. the characters are all but stereotypes, and the story is flat and uninteresting, something you might expect out of a recent graduate of a writing school, looking to make money with a standard formula rather then shoot for stardom and risk it all on an epic tale.

it just didn't cut it for me. im one of those freaks who actually reads for fun, mind you, so maybe its my fault for actually getting some quality literature into me, and getting used to a high standard of storytelling. i guess if the most sophisticated narrative you have ever read is harry potter, HL2 might seem awesome, but for me, it was actually very substandard.

i like Yahtzee reviews, they are amusing and they do pick apart the bad points of a game. however, i always take them with a grain of salt. he never has time to do a really in depth look at the game, due to the necessity of cracking out one vid a week. that doesn't mean his reviews are wrong, per se, but it does mean they are not to be taken as gospel.

Yahtzee isn't funny anymore to me. I find his reviews are getting stale and it's basically hating for the sake of hating. And the 15 seconds of 'NOOOO' was worse than the Darth Vader episode 3 'NOOO'.

He still has a point sometimes, I liked his review of the Prince of Persia Sands series, but he's indeed becoming increasingly bitter and aggressive...
I lol'd at his 15-second NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, but I liked Vader's one better...

The Force Unleashed.
The graphics are amazing, but it's full of glitches. Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast was so much better. If I wanted to play a broken hack n' slash game, i'd play Devil May Cry 3.

Quake 4- I was expecting this game to be Quake 2 after a proverbial boob job. The only reason I still have it is because I got Quake 2 with it for free. It's most critical flaws are: only 2 weapons have flashlights (DOOM 3's constant switching of gun-torch was a hell of a lot more convienient), pretty much every enemy jumps out from behind/a corner, your squadmates where a bunch of sterotypical thugs (most of the interesting or unique guys are killed off anyway) and half of the upgrades you get for your guns turn out to be pretty much useless.

Half Life 2- Pretty much what Sir_Substance said plus other stuff that I'll probably be lynched by Valve fanatics for daring to mention.

Alien vs Predator: Extinction- What can I say? I expected an AVP game...what I got was a half-assed RTS.

I get what you're saying about the pacing of the game, but I don't agree regarding the story. I don't know what more you want from the story; the almost complete destruction of humanity and you (Gordon Freeman) spark the true rebellion. It's quite a good study on the way a mythic hero can influence the masses and become more than a normal person. It has believable characters and isn't about how the USA saves the world. The main character isn't a busty feminist or a macho football player, he's an everyday man who does extra ordinary things.
Just those few points puts half life 2 in a separate class compared to other games out there. I've read quite a few books from different genres and times and still enjoyed the HL2 story. Maybe you just went into the game with the wrong mindset.
I haven't read Harry Potter, is it good? I'm sure a book which took 7 years to write should be good.

I actually found out about this place from Yahtzee. I come here more for Unforgotten Realms and forums that seem to actually be devoid of "JAPANESE > US VOICE ACTING!" and "THIS GAME SUCKS BECAUSE IT'S JAPANESE!"-type fanboys.

I knew everyone is a critic here, but I do agree not all his reviews are going to be funny or as original as his early stuff. However I never expect anything to be good every time, like every band is going to have crap songs and every TV show is going to have crap episodes, its the way of life!

So maybe cut him some slack, its just one thing extra to look forward to every week. And on the topic of TV shows I am happy to say South Park is starting soon Yaaaay!
