Tutorials.

Sure, they started simply enough, teaching you the basic commands then tossing you to the wolves.

Now, so much content development time seems to go into them that they run out of time to make the game. As a result, the majority of modern games are little more than glorified tutorials, and the "final stage" is the only time you are called on to actually use anything you've learned.

First person shooters are largely free of this syndrome, though difficulty curves are often nonexistant. It is worst in most of the RTS games i've played over the past 10 years, as well as a number of games in other genera.

Mass Effect, because it didn't have one, and the combat can just become another run 'n' gun shooter if you don't bother to teach yourself.

I realized I could use my bionic powers right after the Citadel... Thanks obvious missing tutorial...
I'm pretty sure that when I played ME on both my Xbox360 and my computer, there were popup windows telling me how to do things, such as using bionic powers. I'm fairly sure they helped me out a lot. When I picked up the game again I was irritated that I couldn't remember how to use bionic powers, and then the popup window came and told me how. Then I was all like "Thanks popup window", and it was all like "You're welcome dude!" and then we totally owned the rest of the game together.

Halo 3: ODST has the most obnoxious tutorials, because it makes you do them every single fucking time you play. I realise that they're kind of integrated into the stories but it's annoying to have to learn how to use your VISR when you've already beaten the game three times.
Actually the game asks you straight in the beginning if you wish to perform the tutorial or not. I think it's B to decline it.

"Today we?re going on a secret mission to get coffee and donuts, the only problem is the Germans drank all the coffee and ate all the donuts. So now were gonna go kick their asses" -Call of duty 3
"One rule, you're no good to me dead!"

On topic: Borderlands's tutorial was piss easy.

Nope, once you find the first terminal which gives you your map you have to do the VISR training. Every time.

Any game where they say things like "To use an item, press the use button" or "To fire your gun, press the fire button" You're like "Yeah.. thanks..."

By the way, its not Bionic, its Biotic. Just for future reference.

The worst one would have to be GTA IV. If a games still telling you half way through how to use your phone which you have at the beginning of the game... something went wrong.

The best one would have to be the spider man 2 tutorial because it wasn't a textbox telling me what to do, but a funny guy who ridiculed me when i skipped it and made me compelled to do the tutorial. That game was awesome

The worst it his old game called Forgotten realms, Demon souls.
It teaches you all the good moves and techniques after the first level which is basically mash, mash, mash. It kinda sucks.

Black and white 1 & 2 have to take the award for the worst.

You have to listen to the good guy tell you how to move in one direction, then the opposite, then forward, then away, then how to rotate the camera, then rotate it back, zoom in and zoom out and you have to do it every time you start a new game. It makes you want to scream.

Call of Duty 2 had an epic tutorial

Potatoes!
Out of interest, have you ever tried to attack the german prisoner with one? The results are equally hilarious.

Paradox is notorious for having tutorials that are essentially a list of what each button on the screen is called without any elaboration on what they actually do.

The Dark Messiah of Might and Magic tutorial was pretty cool. It teaches you everything you need to know but it is also relevant for the story of the game.

Best Tutorial goes to "Eat Lead: The Return of Matt Hazard", you just got to love a game where the main character gives the developers shit for including a tutorial.

Worst: Any game that tells you how to do something when you've either just done it, just died and then it tells you or keeps telling you 12 hours into the game. Or tells you to use the 'do this' button without telling you which button would actually 'do this'.

Best: What tutorial? Oh...

Simpsons Hit and Run had an epic tutorial, mainly because the loading screen was making fun of tutorials.
Ahh, I remember that game, epic. As for my choice, I'll go with the call of duty tutorials, they always seemed pretty fun to me
