People hate Gamestop cause they're a buisness, and as a buisness they're required to make money. The Gamestop hate comes from idiots who want everything handed to them on a silver platter. Listening to people whine about Gamestop makes me laugh and makes my blood boil at the same time. SHUT UP ALREADY!!!

Because they shit all over PC gamers.

There is one shelf of PC Games and half of them are WoW, or other blizzard games. (I know that's why people buy but where's the selection). They also don't do any form of trade or returns on PC Games, if you want to return it, it has to have been unopened, and then you get a 50% refund. OFC thats at EB Games but, they're owned by Gamestop.
The reason they don't take used PC games is cause most of them are disc protected with only one key that will work per disc. Keys don't normally work twice.

Personally, I don't hate them, in fact, I use them when I need to reserve games.
Same.

I only use them to pre-order new releases/expansions, otherwise, I'll order games from Amazon.

I don't loathe them, more disagree with sales tatics. If I wasn't hounded to pre-order blah I would like them better. When the employee goes into "but if you pre-order now...." I pull out the "Shut your cockholster before I start talking Midkips and Battletoads!" After they see I'm not interested in their offer, we see eye to eye.

Well the one by me I've never had a problem with the staff there other than them asking if I want to pre-order stuff but I think they do that to everyone. My only real problem is the people who go in there, god I want to strangle them.

I think it is by location. My local Gamestop is awesome. Nice people, pretty good sales/trade in-values, etc.
Same here.
It seems like the people that work there are having a not-too-bad time.

They charge way too much for used product.

For example Fallout 3 used for the ps3 at gamestop is currently $30 american. This is sitting right next to the new release that comes with all the DLC for $60 new. If I went to a different local-only chain they sell the new version of fallout for $60 but the used old one is now $14 because they know no one will want it when the other one is a better deal. The fact that a lot of times you save a whopping $5 for a disc someone probably wiped their butt with doesn't help either. They don't check shit at all. I had got used games from several different stores that didn't work before I gave up on them completely. They charge way too much for used product.

What sucks is that bigger companies have seen the unfathomable amounts of cash GS makes from used sales. So Best Buy and Wal*Mart are trying the used game gig in certain test markets now. It sucks because if they are following the example of EB and GS they're just going to suck as bad.

They were rivalling against the Escapist Magazine for a Webby. We won BTW.
I think you're thinking of GameSpot, a gaming website.

We're talking about GameStop, a crappy store.

Probably.
In that case, I don't know. I've always liked Electronics Boutique and Gamestop. Just check the games for damage before you leave the store.

If you want to work there, watch this [http://www.dailymotion.com/relevance/search/zero%2Boriginality/video/x6wnow_zero-originality-episode-1_videogames] first.
That was horrible. The guy can't talk without slurring whole sentences together, he sounds like a tired drunk who just can't reach his beer, trying to get people to pass him said beer.

Not even going to mention the ZP part, but his name "Zero Originality" fitted quite well.

I currently work in a gamestop near my house and we do get a lot of hate, which i find hilarious cause i hate the store too, now, you might ask "Isn't it hypocritical to hate the person giving you money?" No, They do really rip people off quite frequently, and they tell us to be forceful marketers, which i find obnoxious and i don't do, also, if you want to find anything older than call of duty 2 (360) you're screwed. Yeah, it's a major gaming store with nice pre-order bonuses and a convenient place to buy games because we're everywhere, but honestly, i don't even buy my games here, i go to a local shop with much better trade-in deals and you can find NES, SNES and even Atari 2600 games in there. Although i do enjoy working there because all our staff is pretty nice and the manager is a major pothead so he's really chill, he just laughs when i complain about how much i hate the store i'm in.

Because, they don't care about you. They don't feel the need to make sure that you are satisfied as a customer. All they want is your money. I know, they're a company and that is their goal but there are some stores out there, usually smaller stores, that are not just employees, they're gamers. They're like you. They want to spread the hobby of gaming and are not only interested in ripping you off. One time I was playing brawl with my friends and the wii fell over. The disc got scratched and wouldn't play. I took it into gamestop very upset and asked if there was anything that could be done to save it. They said that I could trade it in as a used game and then buy a new disc. I begrudgingly accepted and paid an extra $30 for something that probably only cost the company pennies to repair. A couple months later my Rock Band disc got scratched when the 360 fell over (don't ask why things keep falling over in my house) and I thought I was going to have to bite the bullet and buy another copy, but this time I decided to go to play n trade which was a little farther from my house but around it was on my way back from running some errands. I told them what happened, expecting a similar answer and ready to fork over my hard earned money, but I was told they have a machine in the store that could repair my disc right then and there. I was delighted and asked how much it would cost for me to use their magical device and they told me it would be free. FREE! They could have ripped me off by making me buy a new copy, hell they could have just charged me money to have it fixed but they didn't! Do you know why? It's because they, unlike gamestop, give a shit about their customers. That's why I hate Gamestop. They don't care about us. We're just walking dollar bills to them. I don't know about you, but I'd rather buy my games at a store that treats me like a human being instead of just some sucker they can sell subscriptions and reservations to.

I don't like them because they bought out EBGames. I didn't even know they'd purchased EBGames until I went to compare prices online and noticed that the EBGames website was just a color swapped duplicate of the GameStop site. For some reason that really bothered me. I think it took them five years to swap the layout of my local store, too.

I can't say I like Best Buy or any other store any better, though. I'll go to GameStop if I can't find something anywhere else and I don't want to wait for it to get delivered.

Trade in Value fail
Obnoxious PreOrder tactics
That right there are two huge reasons for me.
Lack of selection...
Dodgey used games...
Shit like that.

I fucking see their ads in my damn games now... Which shouldn't be a big deal but only serves to remind me every time I play Prototype that I hate them. I would be able to forget and forgive them but no, I have to see them every damn time I zip around Manhattan with my hoodie wearing apocalypse.

I'm all right with my local GameStop since I have been going there for about 4 years now and the people know me and I am friends with them. Even if its not me, they usually provide friendly and great service to everyone, but I will never trade in games there like others have said.

In all the years I've gone to my local game stop at least 4 years I've never had problems. All the used games I've bought worked, I've never had a bad service experience, and there is a decent amount of selection.
Sure, you don't get much back with trade-in's, but that's the same for just about any business that deals with used merchandise (Used Car dealerships, used bookstores, used electronics, pawnshops etc.). They do push pre-orders and membership subscriptions a bit, yet other stores do the same thing (Best Buy, Blockbuster, Barnes & Noble, Walden Books, Borders and so on).
If you hate Game Stop for the trade-in's and the pre-order/ subscription pushing than you should probably hate just about any and all businesses out there that deal with used merchandise or that have a special member's discount card.

I just got a job at Gamestop! :D Very exciting stuff.
And I love the Gamestop stores near my school; the staff are very friendly and they really know their stuff. Not every GS experience is a bad one - I liked the place enough to sit for several hours among smelly people in sweats at a job fair for this, after all. ;P

I hate the trade-in value aspect, but I say if you're dumb enough to take half of what your game is worth, you deserve to get ripped-off.

Also, when I went to reserve a copy of Modern Warfare 2, I was asked if I "wanted to reserve the one that comes with infrared goggles."

...

sigh.

EDIT: Oh, and then there was the time I wanted a memory card for my 360, and the clerk tried to "upsell" me by offering me a hard drive. I said "no thanks, I have a 120 GB HD, I just want the memory card so I can bring my gamer profile and DLC to my friends' house." His response? "Well... you can do that with a 20 gig HD too, and it's only a couple dollars more." Rather than explain to him the many reasons why he failed, I just walked away.
