The gay sales pitch (according to OMM)...

"One Million Moms" (of which there are not one million, and I'm not sure that they're all even moms, but never mind that) is upset at DC Comics for gayifying a previously straight superhero. Apparently their concern is that kids will see an awesome gay hero being awesome and gay, and then all their kids will instantly want to be gay, too. This, of course, is just the latest example of the Evil Homosexual Agenda at work: those darn gays will stop at nothing to gay up your kids because...reasons. They hate Jesus or something.

So how do you think OMM imagines the gay sales pitch going, exactly? Here's my guess: "That's right, Jimmy! You too can have an exciting, fulfilling life as part of a historically-marginalized demographic! You can look forward to potentially being thrown out of the house by your parents and getting beaten to death in the street by strangers! Or maybe, depending on where you live, you'll get to never marry the person you love! And all you have to do is overcome your aversion to cock! Whaddaya say?!"

(Captcha: "nip and tuck.")

How does being a mother excuse being a homophobic moron?

Any animal can breed, your opinion isn't worth more just because you can fulfill a biological imperative.

'Won't somebody think of the children' and 'As a mother...' are the worst precursors to bigoted statements since 'I'm not a racist but...'

I could see their point if they intended to make them all gay but would not the vast majority of straight hero kind of oh i don't know make straight look awesome.

I mean I may be gay but damn does James Bond make the whole straight guy gets the girl thing look cool. It has how ever never gave me the desire to sleep with a woman, and frankly being gay is awesome... at least for gay guys.

So yes won't somebody think of the children, you know the one who like their own gender and then are told that they are evil and ridiculed or even beaten.

I think the biggest surprise is that One Million Moms is still claiming to exist

I had an angry lady call my store (I own a comic book shop in Dublin, CA) on behalf of OMM...same lady called to complain about Life With Archie's gay marriage months ago. It was pretty funny. Northstar (who's getting married next month) has been "out" for what...20 years or so? We've had a dozen characters I can think of off the top of my head...so having another character come out isn't that big a deal. In all honesty, since they haven't even told the retailers who it is yet. I hate to say it, but it's likely going to be a character in a book that is struggling to try and give it a boost and where any fans who bail on the book because the character is gay will do minimal damage to sales. So we wont be seeing Superman, Batman, Aquaman, Flash, or Hal Jordan GL. But a character like Captain Atom, Booster Gold, Green Lantern Kyle Rayner, or even Superboy are much more likely.

The funniest possibilities tossed around in the shop were Lobo or Firestorm...have him be half gay and the other half homophobic...

Soo... awesome gay stuff turns you gay?
Somebody hide Stephen Fry!

He will turn everybody gay!

But for serious OMM needs to go away. What a terrible message to be teaching your children.

Having a minority represented in any media is never a bad thing. I don't see any problem with this. It's the same to me as having a red haired hero or a Jewish hero.

So nobody complains about boob jiggle physics in fighting games, but would OMM raise hell if there were floppy wang physics instead?

Well, makes sense, if the media isn't allowed to portray heterosexuality, it shouldn't be allowed to portray homosexuals.

You specified awesome, so that'd only apply to people living inside his head[/snark]

...yeah, I'm pretty sure Stephen Fry could turn me gay if he tried. So that's one point for OMM, I guess.

Or a red-haired Jewish gay hero [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kathy_Kane#Kate_Kane_.282006_-_Present.29], for that matter.

Specifically he'll only turn you gay for Stephen Fry, so there's not a lot of risk involved. Most of us have already been gay for Stephen Fry and Ian McKellan for years now.

In other news OMM opposes Marvel Comics decision to change its long-time white hero Thor into a African-American man on the fear that their kids may grow up wanting to become black.

See what I did there alongside the example of stupidity.

OT: Honestly, how stupid can one get, catching teh gay is stupid and improbable and I would be surprised to find any scientific evidence to the contrary.

In fact I think we should ban people or groups from speaking publicly unless they have evidence to back up their claims, even politicians bother to make up lies to convince people.

But they do have evidence: Jebus told them. What else do you need?

Was the character said to be straight before or did everyone assume he was?
I think that as part of the reboot of the DC Universe a character who was established previously as being straight will now be reintroduced as a homosexual. Apparently it's going to be Alan Scott, the first Green Lantern, but that's unconfirmed at the moment.

Aside from the stupidity of children becoming gay from comic books, are kids even the target demographic for these comics? There is a huge adult fan base for superhero comics so I wouldn't be surprised if they were geared more towards the older readers, and these mum's are going of the "comics are for kids" stereotype. Wasn't it them who wanted gay relationships out of The Old Republic because of all the poor kids being exposed to it when it was rated for teens?

I find many of the arguments made by one million moms to be counter-intuitive. I see them being all sorts of retarded and straight and it sorta makes me wish I was gay.

Oh noes positive exposure to alternate lifestyles might make people more open to them! I honestly kinda see their point, the more normal bein gay is, the less stigma there will be surrounding and the more people will be open to the possibility. I'd reckon that sexuality is fairly ingrained but like all instincts people can be very good at lying to themselves. So yeah, in some small way greater gay representation in fiction will likely encourage more people to come out. OMM are correct though they're flat out wrong that it's a bad thing.

I never take any group that includes "Moms" or "Mothers" in its name seriously. Because anyone who calls themselves a "Mom" in that way is probably a housewife who has little to no familiarity with the real world.

And a superhero coming out of the closet isn't pitching homosexuality. THIS is pitching homosexuality. NSFW for language, by the way.
