I read that and got tears in my eyes. It read like a story rather than an article, which made it so much worse.
It's dreadful that something like that could happen. The mother says she tried to clothe and feed her daughter, but if she made that effort (supposedly) then why'd she let her sleep with bugs and her own faeces? It's saddening that this poor girl may never be able to speak or interact normally with anyone.
But I'm glad that she has a loving home with people who care for her and do all they can to help her.

Then again, if it IS fake, then we've been played like suckers... If this nearly made me cry and it wasn't real then, urgh, I don't even know.

I know right? It's just as bad as (I don't know if you heard about it 'cause it happened here in New Zealand) a family ended up killing this baby girl called Nia (after years of torturing her by hanging her on a washing line, shutting her in a tumble-dryer and switching it on, amongst other horrible things) and then turning up at her funeral wearing 'Nia 4eva' on their T-shirts... ugh.
Anyway, sorry to draw away from THIS story...

What kind of system lets an incompetent parent (regardless of IQ or circumstance) keep a child for that long?

I'm just glad to hear that there are people with the heart to care for someone like this. It's absolutely disgusting how this girl was treated, and I would say that neglecting your child to the extent that they can't talk, use a diaper, and weigh 48 pounds when they're seven should get at least a 20 year prison sentence. If you can't care for the kid, put it up for adoption. But then again the mother has an IQ of 77. I'm an asshole when it comes to people who have been well taken care of, but when it's your daughter who never had a chance due to your shitty parenting I have no sympathy. Hell, I would pay for the plane ticket, the revolver, and the bullet just to put the sad sack of shit mother out of her misery. Didn't deserve to reproduce, and ruined her child's life because of it. There are times when I really believe in eugenics. Still, I am absolutely amazed at the family that took the girl in and raised her as a daughter. The story is both a testament to how awful humans can be, and how amazing they can be. I really hope she ends up having a decent life.

Not to be the cold heartless bastard but that's amazing how the brain develops; I could understand these children not having normal human interactions but not learning many motor functions or survival skills afterwards is quite......intriguing.

well... i dont want to sound harsh but i think everyone who has posted is very shallow. We all know stuff worse than this goes on in the third world, and no one really cares, yes you give a fiver at charity events but dont actually care. Then a case in the 1st world comes up and its all 'aww' and 'such a shame' and some such. And i am not being all saintly and saying i am perfect, i do it, we all do it.
I do care, by the way, i think this is wrong, and yes i am being amazingly trivial here, but the point still stands.
On a more moral note, i hope she's fine.

It is damn sad, but it isn't the first time I have heard such stories.
Atleast she wasn't sexualy molested or given a gun and send to fight high on crack. Cuz there are children who have exactly such fates. Her story is sad but there is a happy ending. For many children there are no happy endings. Raped children often end up with severe psyhosis, in Africa a kid which hold AK do not get empaty, it gets bullet to the brain. Child labor is still largely used in undeveloped contries. In small viliges in India if a child is born a girl it often is left in the forest or strangel in its sleep.
World is fucked up. If you just understand it...my consolations.
