Just play with your friends, you'll avoid all the other people.
Playing with friends is much more fun then playing on your own with people you don't know.
I just bought a 360, and once I get LIVE and a game to call my very own (and a little more freetime, I haven't had enough to finish HL2:2) I'll be playing Halo 3 with my friends from school.
Also, I'm really used to the mouse and keyboard, so aiming with the contoller is a bit awkward...and sometimes I run into things...while walking.

Take it with a grain of salt, mate.
For example, the other day I was playing CoD: WaW and playing like I usually do (I like Sniper class loadouts, with my tactics being 'snipe and go') and one guy just harassed me for the next five games, calling me a 'camper' and a 'fag' etc.
We were only on the same team once and in that game he made it his duty to kill me whenever he could, or throw poison gas in my face.
And then I had an absolute shocker of a match and two other people happened to finish above this guy (with me right down the bottom
) and they started getting the same 'camper' treatment. So it appears that, to some people, anyone better then them has to be 'cheating' somehow.
Just try to avoid these people and you'll be 'right.
My adventures into online gaming continued today, with the day's highlight being a 5-0 win to me and the lowlight being peripherial malfunctions.

I also attemted to 'join a party' with Fish Food Carl and Bling Cat today, but was dismayed to find that my microphone didn't seem to want to work, so most of what I could hear was confused muffles of "Geez, he's quiet, isn't he?".To cap it all off, in the middle of my mute conversation the power went out in the house, so I decided to call it a day.
Hopefully the next time I use my headset, it will actually be working and you can all hear the dulcet tones of my radio-ready harmonies.
Anyhow, what I'm lookingfor nowis somebody to intriduce me into the world of TF2. I figure going blind into a competitive environment isn't going to win me many friends, so having someone there who can explain to people my great experiment would be great.
Anyhow, if anybody feels like playing tour guide, hit me up at about 0300GMT tomorrow if at all possible.

If you do venture out into the intellectual wastelands known as Halo 3 or Gears of War 2, remember that you must keep your elitism pride. No matter what do not descend to their level, no matter how bad the joke, or how offensive the comment you must rise above.

Joe, I can probley give you a leg up. I played Team Fortress 2 like mad on the 360, despite an unholy amount of lag. So I know the game pretty well, but don't expect anyone look kindly apoun you for being a first time player. One tip I would say, if you've started playing already, make sure you mostly stick to engineer. They're a great beginners class. Watch where other other engineers their turrets, try them out, experiment elsewhere, its a good way to get comfortable with the maps.Hey Joe said:

Well, as long as you don't try and continuously heal an Engineer (as they don't generally attack much) or Spy (for reasons of you being rather a giveaway to any stealth effort). Heavies are usually the best bet for a target to heal, just do give the other team members some attention if they're wounded and you've got a moment.

As a WoW player I spend alot of my time working with other players closely and i think the enjoyment comes from achieving as a team, however i often play CoD4 on my my friends xbox (He get's the bad rep if i fail)Which i enjoy defeating other players more than working as a team sometimes. So it comes down to what you prefer: Team efforts to win or simply beating other players, some games will appeal to one more than the other, try a few different games see what you prefer.
Oh and as for your avergae 12 year old online player, expect singing, 'your mom' insults and constant wining about their epic failures. Thank fúck for the mute option.

Not really since my generalization about Halo 3's multiplayer was well informed and made only after extensively experiencing all of what I was making the generalization about, which is what I was hoping Hey Joe would do with xbox live, as opposed to making a generalization about xbox live based on only one or a few games, such as if I decided that all of Halo 3's multiplayer was filled with annoying little kids after playing only 2 or 3 games.mkxiii said:

and if you should find yourself faced with an abusive prepubescent turd, the "file complaint" button is actually quite effective... micro$oft takes all complaints seriously, and will take appropriate action from even a single incident. not enough people use the report option, but many complain of the abuses heaped upon them....

I was never bothered about bad language online. Halo 3 is the cloest to anarchy you can get
you get owned by cheats. There is no honour amongst gamers
but its the cheap tactics that really got me riled, especially a beat em up like Soul Calibur 4 repetitive cheap moves and then theres lag people take advantage so much no such thing as fair play.

Having said that you will rarely meet some one who is a respectful gamer I have met some good freinds this way Its really rewarding considering all the morons you have to endure.

yes, there are many annoying and obnoxious users on live, and if you're not careful they can and will ruin your day...Vampire Kitteh said:

if you take a little time to seek out the groups that are SERIOUSLY devoted to the games you play, you can find a rich and rewarding community that overshadows the bad apples...
left4dead is a great example: jump into a public game, and you'll find on average about 50% of the players w/ a mic even hooked up, and then only half of them will talk and make an attempt to work as a team.... if you've played the game, you know that you can't get away with that level of non-communication and have any chances of succeeding...
but, if you ask around a little, you can find many groups of players who want to experience L4D the way the developers intended, and who endeavor to organize clans, contact lists and matches to that end...
forza 2 also has a vast network of devoted teams, drivers, tuners (mechanics), painters and artists... you just need to dig a little into the community to find the good sports, and be educated enough to know what options and tools are available for dealing with and avoiding the undesirables...
