As I have traveled the road in this great journey we call 'gaming', there is one fork I have steered well clear of. That road my friends, is multiplayer.

I'm not sure why I've never ventured online in these lonely days, but I'm making up for lost time. I have decided that I will endure the 'Hey Joe online experiment' and throw myself into the deep end. Tomorrow, I purchase a headset and a 12-month subscription to XBOX Live Gold.

From there, I hope to test the waters in many games to see what the whole experience is all about. I plan to see if I get crushed or not in FIFA09, fragged or not in TF2 or tea bagged in Halo 3.

But why do you care fellow gamers?

Because this is an experience we've all been through at one point, and one that many others will go through. So, inspired by the generations of gamers to come, I hope to chronicle my experiences day-to-day on this very thread so that gamers of the future may get first-hand knowledge about venturing into the void.

Stay tuned.

Good luck dude, and I'd keep those headphones round your neck instead of close to your ears.
Yea, I end up muting pretty much everyone in Call of Duty 4 anyway. Between the racist remarks and the 12 year olds that just like to hold out their vocal sounds, it's a bit much for me.

I kindly link you to my topic [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.73586] on how to handle the kids you will stumble upon.

Good luck fine sir. If you last longer than a month, try PC gaming ontop of it.

I remember when I first started playing games online. First it was Doom over my Dad's office LAN, then it was Duke Nukem 3D and MUD2 on dial-up.

I got hooked on it quite early on, and it's still a lot of fun despite running into the occasional disagreeable individual.

Good luck mate :)

I recommend Left 4 Dead as a relatively hate-less game. Saying that all the players on normal difficult seem to be uncommunicative retards sometimes. Expert mode will guarantee a good team and a hard fight.

Online FPS is a lot of fun, because it offers a lot of refreshing game play all the time. If you fall in love, you can always grab a nice little bargain laptop (or PC) and join the real FPS crowd. The PC experience is just superior in every sense--more updates, better control, etc. And you don't need a top spec computer to run most games on normal setting, so that will save you quite a bit.

... Talk about trial by fire...

Hop on a PC online, seriously... It's less painful and more productive.

Thanks to the current economic crisis and my lack of a job, I am limited to these games for now

1. Orange Box

2. GTAIV

3. FIFA09

But I will consider getting another shooter if I can find one in the bargain bin

Interesting stuff.

Good luck with that I've heard bad things about online play. I've generally played Burnout Paradise and people seem to be cool. I've never had any racist comments but I imagine it's over the Live/PSN.

Let us know how often you get slurs.
Let us know how often you have to mute.

I too recommend reading this.

Best of luck, Joe. If push comes to shove, try to remember it's only a game and just have fun with it.

The best way is to form a good group of friends so you dont have to put up with annoying kids / racists.
Once you have a good group new people joining soon get kicked if they abuse the others.

You'll find it easier if you host btw

I reccomend you practice both inserting the phrase "fag" at the beginning, middle and end of your sentences seemingly randomly regardless of the tone you are using to talk to someone and learning how to using "fuck" as a noun, adjective, verb, pronoun or however else you can slip it into a sentence; master these two core skills and your away.

Seriously though? I haven't found xbl as bad as people say; at least I hadn't till I foolishly tried to play gears of war (one) multiplayer and learned that anything that wins a match is "cheap" and anyone and everything is a "fag". I have said it before but cooperative games (e.g rainbow six vegas 2 on terrorist hunt) tend to, for an unknown reason, have nicer players than counter-operative games (e.g Vegas 2 versus mode, GoW etc).

I've only just recently picked up an XBox and joined Live and I can also recommend the L4D community. Usually you can tell which players have come straight from playing Halo 3 as they charge into hordes of zombies and put their teammates in danger...a lot. Thankfully, they seem to be in the minority.

One of the reasons I actually love playing online on the PS3 is that out of the million+ gamers, only eight of them have a headset. Silence truly is golden.

Edit: Managed to merge two posts somehow... ¬.¬

Good for you,

I'll just stick to chatting to some of the awesome guys I met in co-op mode and multiplayer on CoD5 on xbox live recently.

While there is slim in multiplay, I love it. it's such a different experience to play with real people and to be challenged (ass kicked) often. My first time playing online was with Delta Force: Black Hawk Down. After 5 minutes of getting used to it, I was laughing my ass off because I was getting destroyed, but it was actually fun.
