Before you judge xbox live, please play Rainbow Six: Vegas as well as Halo 3, and note the difference. Your experience will depend almost entirely on what game you play. Since the annoying little kids with 0 intelligence are too dumb and hyperactive to play a game like RS:V, you will hear more mature teenagers and adults instead. Your ears and brain will thank you, and xbox live will thank you for not making generalizations about it based on Halo 3 of all things.
For a budget game with a very adult community, I'd recommend Street Fighter 2 HD Remix on XBLA. It's very competitive and skill-intensive, and not a single player has complained about my tactics. One guy I'd never met decided to help me hunt for achievements in a ranked match, and did uppercuts for 75 seconds while I beat on him with Zangief.
Apart from my WoW phase a couple of years ago, I also have never chosen to do multiplayer in games. And after WoW I probably never will...
If I want to interact with people I use my phone and go outside. I view gaming a bit like reading or that other thing I do: a solitary activity.

I personally don't care for online play. I don't even have a Gold Memebership on Xbox Live as I see it as a waste of money on my part as I would never used it.
All the console have games with online that peek my interest, but I never want to play with anyone else.

Ah, to be 12 again. Return to Castle Wolfenstein was my first real foray into online multiplayer, and not only was it like crack to me, but because of the community not consisting of retards, it somehow managed to mature me, and provide social contact with those that I would never both talking to because they were older. In fact, call me naive, but I think it's because so many of the players are little kids and immature teenagers that the community is such a mess.
I own halo 3 and on XBL all ya have to do is mute everyone. there ya go now its quiet for ya and you can concentrate on the game. and everyones horror storys ive been told is they kill you for the shotgun or energy sword...maybe its my luck but no one has done it to me. There was one were i was hit with a gravity hammer but i finished that fight by making it my own duty to stick him each and every time i saw him.neoman10 said:

On subject, try all the games out. Some you will prefer, others you will give a wide berth. Just learn which games you like and enjoy online and stick to them. If you get recommendations from friends and it sounds good, then try that too. In other words, just use common sense.

Really you will enjoy it. With Fifa online hardly anyone puts a mic in so it's mostly just a game against someone with a real brain.
GTA online is just generally bad. It lags all the time and only really works if you are playing with friends.
TF2 is quite good as well. There aren't that many annoying people, and can be very fun.

Day 1: I decided to enter the world of multiplayer gaming as slowly as possible, so I went online in the search of a FIF09 match.
I went for a random ranked match, and my first match was Arsenal vs Man United. The standard of play was quite good, and I scored the first after a good cross found its match. The second half was tight, with the player holding most of the possession but unable to carve out any meaningful opportunities. They scored, off an errant defensive header which fell to a greedy striker who buried it.
1-1 and all to play for in the final 20 minutes.
Not 5 minutes later and I had my nose back in front again after some short passes in the box fed one of my strikers who buried it in the back of the net. I did manage to carve out a couple of more opportunities as well as surviving a few from the opposite player, but I kept it tight at the back and made sure I didn't give away possession too easily. The final whistle went, and I walked away from my first match victorious. Hurrah!
Shortly after, I received a message from my opponent.
"time wasting pussy"
Oh yes, sore losers abound apparently.
The next two matches were really tight as well, and the first went to penalties, and I was able to bury all my spot kicks to take it out.
The second of these went to extra time, and the player managed to score in the first half of injury time to break my heart. There was some bad lag in the second half of this match, and for about one minute, my controller went dead and my opponent almost scored.
Impressions so far is that it's been fun. I'm going to play a couple matches tonight as well, and am always up for a good game if anybody wants to look up 'JimboRK1'.
