I'm gonna consider Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan a band since I can't imagine better American music.

Queen, Metallica, or The Rolling Stones.
I hope you were making joke.

Anyway it's a the greatest American band thread, not a your favourite American band thread, Some people don't seem to have picked up on that.

My vote goes for The Crickets.

For music that's ridiculously popular and all that?
Hendrix, Easily. He was ridiculously talented and pioneered god damn everything for playing/recording in modern music.

All my personal favourites are way too obscure to have a huge influence on music at large. Progressive metal does seem to be getting more popular in metal circles though.

I'm gonna go on a limb here and say the Miles Davis Quintet. At least as far as jazz goes. (John Coltrane *****!)

For everything else, Aerosmith and the Chili Peppers. Both are actually similar in some aspects, and they both have a lot of staying power.

It always has been and always will be a tie between the Rolling Stones and the Beatles.

OT: I say The Jimi Hendrix Experience.

EDIT: Can I change that to Black label Society? =P
No, you can't. Because you said "/thread", so you lose all your rights as a human being.

OT: I nominate...Cyanide and Giraffes. I made that up, I'm just making fun of all the obscure crap people have been nominating. In all seriousness....The Beatles.

I don't know of that many great American bands. It seems, most of the bands I listen to have turned out to be british. (Like Rolling Stones). But I guess I like Foo Fighters, Nirvana and Green Day quite a bit, And they're all American, right?

EDIT: also, Guns'n'Roses.

Authority Zero.
Within the Ruins and Brain Drill are up there too for being amazingly, insanely technical. Kinda sad, half the bands I see people mentioning suck so much.
