My favorite is still haibane renmei... Beautiful series, very relaxing, sweet and has a lot of thoughtful depths to it

Lots of good anime to choose from!
My decision has to fall on "Full Moon wo Sagashite" though.
There are few animes that have managed to move me to tears, and this is one of those.

Cowboy Bebop by far the best, but I feel compelled to mention my favorites anyhow.

Samurai Champloo
FLCL
Elfen Lied
Black Lagoon
Deathnote
Avatar: The Last Airbender
Ghost in the Shell: SAC
Grave of the Fireflies
Hellsing
Peacemaker
Bleach
Dragonball Z
Gantz
Excel Saga
Code Geass
Trigun
Outlaw Star
Claymore and I think I'll stop before it gets outta hand.

Though, movie-wise, Princess Mononoke. That's pretty much the film you show someone to get them into anime.

Am i the only one that think hunter x hunter is the best anime out there?
although that might be because i watched it really early in my anime watching days. otherwise my second pick would be full metal alchemist. did not like brotherhood though. i know i know. it's more like the manga and all that but fma original just is better as an anime.

I know the thread title says to choose one best show, but I'm gonna use this as an excuse to gush sycophantically about my favorites like everyone else.

Mushi-shi - A really beautiful, creative show that never fails to make me sleepy. Slow-paced, but an incredible stab at (what feels like) a bunch of totally original Japanese folk-tales.

Mononoke - Shitty animation is cleverly disguised by some of the most eye-catching and colorful art direction ever devised. A really brilliant and abstract look at the frailty of the human heart that secretly wants to be a show about scary ghosts. Or is it the other way around?

Eve no Jikan - Androids and humans co-existing peacefully and learning about each other and shit. Very, very old ground for sci-fi, but this show manages to make it all seem fresh again by transplanting all the philosophical discussions to a Starbucks.

Wolf's Rain - Best ever soundtrack. Really, friggin' good English dub. Excellent animation. Religious subtext. Wolves who become friends. Go watch.

Kino's Journey - More philosophy stuff, but this time it's all pretty pessimistic. Basically a travelogue of a neutral observer who watches people in various fictional countries be horrible to each other. Also, there's a talking motorcycle.

Ergo Proxy - Is anime these days too bright and cheerful for you? Altogether not enough emo-gothic art design and shades of gray. Try Ergo Proxy! Now with more awesome game show episode!

Serial Experiments Lain - I've heard that a college professor made his students watch this in class. So yeah, if you like cyberpunk, watch this and people will think you're smart.

Monster - Yay, Monster! Fun fact: My avatar is from this show. Also, I challenge you to find a show of any medium that has a better villain.

Durarara. There are no words. There are simply no words. Unless awesomtacular is a word. Then there would be words.

I would have to say Dragonball Z. Granted I grew up watching, but I'm able to go back them again and still enjoy them.

Full Metal Alchemist at the moment from what I've seen. Everything about is good, hardly any filler and it actually ended instead of going on forever.

Hunter X Hunter is my personal favourite out of all but it wasn't very interesting at the beginning, only till they started the exam it became awesome. That's why I'm giving it to FMA, brilliant start and end, I just find that really important when I call something the greatest.

That would have to be One Piece. There are some many memorable characters in the series that you just have to love it. Oda is a genius.

I love how the majority of you guys have some really great taste in anime =D.
but then there are "YOU GUYS" ( and you know who you are) who have posted: bleach, naruto, Dragon ball GT, and high school of the dead, etc.
You folks need to go do something to fix your brains, these are bad anime. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but you need to go watch more anime, then you'll know why your wrong.
on topic: most of my favs come from the toonami and early adultswim era on cartoon network: Gundam wing, DBZ, Big O, Outlaw star, Gundam 8th MS team, Trigun, FLCL, Rurouni Kenshin, Samurai Champloo etc. Hellsing Ultimate and gurren lagann are pretty cool. But I don't think i have a singular favorite. Bebop is tough to beat.

Hmmm... My favorite anime is probably Bokurano. At least at the moment it is. I like character development. That's pretty much all this anime is. Also... the subbing his hilariously bad. Even that doesn't ruin the anime for me though. If you haven't seen it, you should check it out.

Trigun =D *cough* Anyway...

High School of the Dead can burn in a fire yes...

But, I'd like to address Naruto and Bleach. (GT wasn't terrible... but it was far from good)

Well... mostly Naruto. (Bleach is pretty good... but I only feel like talking about Naruto... and I've only read the manga of Bleach)

I'd like to point out that Naruto is actually a great anime. It has some very interesting characters, great animation, and at times... an amazing story.

I don't think I really need to explain much of the story to anyone... but I WILL if need be. The only major flaw of this anime is... designated protagonist syndrome. http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DesignatedProtagonistSyndrome

I'm pretty much saying... the main cast is boring and annoying. That doesn't make it a bad anime. Especially because it has sooo much "good" characterization to make up for it. Why do you consider it a bad anime? Have you watched a lot of it?

Edit: Oh. The anime also has a lot of BORING filler. Even so, it's still a nifty anime.

To this day I don't get why everyone loves Fullmetal Alchemist. I watched it expecting something some people herald as the best anime ever made. What I got was mediocre at best.
