If this has been asked before, I apologize, but I have to ask, what, in your opinion, is the greatest sin one can commit? oh, and because this can be expected to be controversial, try to avoid fighting as much as possible please. ^_^

the Greatest sin in my opinion is to mentally scar someone for no distinguishable reason.

I could totally stretch my imagination and say, raping someone's corpse while robbing a bank so you can pay for your meth-lab that you make your own children work in.

Realistically, I think murder, the only thing you really have no chance to recuperate from.

Sin is an arbitrary word used to describe an act against the laws of God.
I'm an atheist, so I don't believe sin can exist.

Sin is a violation of morality. You don't believe in morality?

"What man is a man that does not make the world better?"

To take from the world without giving back, IMO. I'm not condoning rape, believe me, that's a close second. Murder doesn't strike me as too sinful because it has the potential to be a double-edged sword; after all, would murdering a cruel dictator make you just as bad as he, or is it justifiable? But not making an effort to improve the world you live in, even in the tiniest, most seemingly insignificant way that only becomes realized one thousand years later, is true selfishness.

Then again, ANY crime can be justified to the perpetrator, but I'm not here to harass everyone's ears about perspective; I'll save that for my own thread.

Acting in a manner contrary to the further advancement of the human race. If you do anything, no matter how small or large, that is holding the rest of us back, you're a sinner. Everything from petty crimes that inconvenience someone who is working to improve the human condition to championing technologies that stifle innovation to the outright encouragement and promotion of ignorance.

The greatest sin seems to not be a sin at all(IMO).

You spend your whole life being good, and unless you're a saint, you don't go to heaven.

I mean, wtf?

Morals are arbitrary and abstract, not a fixed concept.

For me there is a difference between killing and murdering. I don't see soldiers and police that kill someone as murderers, or a man defending his family either.

As for you question.... it all depends on the circumstance. If your talking about being in the moment, and watching my family be murdered right in front of me, then yes, I would kill him. If it was down the road and he was captured by the authorities and going through the legal system, no, I would let Due Process take it's course.

And if Due Process didn't take it's course? If that man, who you SAW kill your family, got off easy, you would do nothing? I'm just curious.

Rape would be my #1 sin. There is no justification of it.

Rape. I can forgive most crimes if they have a real reason but rape is just disgusting because it has no real reason. You are willing to destroy someone's life just for a few moments of pleasure that $$50 could get you at the local brothel.
To me that just displays not only a total lack of concern for anyone but yourself but also a display of weakness that you need to dominate someone like that to feel better about yourself.

Then again I am against all crimes without reason. Even shit like people that make computer viruses. They do it for what? No reason other than destroying other peoples property. These people should honestly be put to death.
Rape is awful, but it's usually not about actual physical pleasure. So going to a brothel or picking someone up usually won't satisfy that need.
