[HEADING=1]CHAPTER ONE: THE LONG JOURNEY[/HEADING]
Silas stood in the central chamber of the Sanctuary, its highly vaulted ceiling letting in many uneven shafts of light from its one dome and many windows. The fountain in the center played a happy tune. Now Silas was here for two reason, to wait for his team whom he had signaled several hours ago and were slow to respond. He was also watching thing few ever see, his own mother both singing and dancing.
Backing up, Silas briefly mentioned to his mother that the new girl, Maeve, could sing and had sung well. Now, Silas' mother took this as a threat to her popularity and challenged Maeve to show her skills to the whole of the Guardians, in order to re-assert her dominance. Silas had tried to talk his mother down but once she was set on it...come hell or high water there was going to be a competition in full view of all.
Silas was one of many who were watching but not one who was making bets, as many Guardians were doing. It was an old Irish folk ballad that Silas himself remembered being sung to him long ago. It was obvious both knew this song well and Silas with a knee up on the rim of the fountain watched with interest. His mother started first, advancing down the high staircase pausing only a few times to brush close by some who were at the edges of the staircase watching. They traded verses and choruses, each getting louder and louder as they approached. Their dance moves were well rehearsed and both were evenly matched. The end of their singing came when they stood face to face staring into each others eyes steadily. Finally Silas' mother threw up her hands and walked off in a huff. There was a chorus of clapping as Maeve did a little curtsy before running off.
Silas turned to the gates and began to walk away. He tapped his communicator twice to signal the team. "If I could have everyone's attention for a moment or two. Could we all get back to the Crellyx and meet up with Damien? That'd be great, thanks."
